Week 3 Dear parents, What a great performance we had for our 3-6 musical! Abba-Ca-Dabra certainly lived up to expectation and uncovered some future silver screen superstars. I thank all the teachers for giving up their time to ensure the students had the opportunity to experience this event. A very special thank you to Mrs Woodham, who organised and coordinated the musical. Mrs Woodham has put in countless hours of work to make sure the musical was a success and all our children had an opportunity to perform. Without such dedicated teachers, these events would simply not happen. I would like to acknowledge and congratulate two members of our school community this week. Mrs Goffett, our technology teacher and Debbie Price, a grandparent of our school. They have been nominated for a Central Coast Public Education Award and will receive these awards at a special ceremony on Tuesday 15th August. Mrs Goffett receives her award for inspirational technology leadership and innovation in providing 21st Century learning for students. Debbie Price receives her award for outstanding contributions to the students at Copacabana Public School, through the support of literacy development in the early years. We are very lucky to have such great people supporting the students in our school and I congratulate both Mrs Goffett and Debbie on their prestigious award. Later in this newsletter, I have included a section on school communication. As we now have new and additional methods of communication, it is a good time to remind everyone of these options and of the protocols for engaging with them. I hope to see you all at the Book Parade next Wednesday. B. Thomas Principal

Communication In response to previous feedback on improving communication at our school, we have made significant changes over the past 2 years. Below is a snapshot of our major forms of communication. Newsletter- Our school newsletter comes out fortnightly on a Thursday. This is distributed to all families via email and is uploaded onto our school website. It provides an update of what is happening in our school, highlights our recent achievements and provides and avenue to communicate wider community events. Website- The school website provides a valuable resource to families and teachers. Student work samples and technology lessons are featured and there are many links to other school resources. P&C also has a section on this website for P&C meeting minutes. Facebook- This social media communication tool is a way to broaden our audience and share positive stories of what is happening at our school on a regular basis. We feature a class of the week and upload photos of special events. We are very thankful for the positive way in which the community has engaged with this social media communication tool. Remind App- Our newest form of communication allows teachers to communicate directly with parents via text messaging. Individual or whole class messages can be sent. If you haven’t signed up for this communication tool, see your child’s class teacher for details. We have also introduced an office group to this app, in an effort to let you know when information notes are being sent home. Please remember that teachers will not be checking their phones during class time, so if you have an urgent message, such as change of plans for how your child is getting home, you need to phone the office to ensure the message gets
through in time.

Kindergarten 2018 A reminder that we are now starting to take Kindergarten enrolments for 2018 before our official Kindergarten Orientation Program begins in Term 4. If you know of any boy or girl who will be starting at Copacabana in 2018, please let them know to pop into the office, put their name down and collect some enrolment forms.
School Tree Day Last Friday, Copacabana PS took part in School Tree Day. Collectively, our wonderful children planted 43 plants or trees around our beautiful school. We focussed on planting out our raised vegetable gardens and the area next to the COLA. Thank you to all the teachers that helped make the day a success and a special thank you to our helpful General Assistant Mr Davis who came in on his day off to help! Another special thank you to our fantastic Intern Teacher on 2W, Miss Calzolari for taking the initiative to buy plants for our raised vegetable gardens. I am sure the children will love harvesting the vegetables and using them in some hands-on class lessons. The children had an amazing time getting their hands dirty and learning about the basics of horticulture and sustainability. This week I have noticed in my class a strong sense of responsibility and enthusiasm to care for the plants and trees around our school. Well done Copa! Mr Waters
Dance News Congratulations to Jessie for getting 1st at the Coast Quest Dance Eisteddfod for Modern in the Under 12 Division.

Science Enrichment Day National Science week is upon us! What better time to dive in and immerse ourselves in the wonderful world of Science! National Science Week is an annual celebration held all around Australia with the sole purpose of inspiring young people to take an interest in Science. Every year there is a different theme. This year’s theme is Future Earth and it focuses on creating an awareness of the need for more sustainable practices. On Monday 14th August, Science will take over the Copacabana Public School Learning program so the day will run a little differently. At 9:30am, the K-2 students will be involved in a special performance by Ruben Meerman, The Surfing Scientist. Ruben takes liquid nitrogen, balloons and the laws of physics and creates an exciting science show! At 11:45am, The 3 - 6 students will also participate in a special science show; “No Time to Waste” by Tim Silverwood. Tim has an inspiring passion for sustainability and aims to pass his enthusiasm for creating positive change to the younger generation. These shows have been funded by the school so they are completely free of charge! We welcome any parents who wish to join their children to come along to the shows and join in the Science fun! Recess will run from 12:45pm – 1:00pm to allow time for the fun-filled afternoon. The students will also be able to enjoy some hands-on science experimentation to further encourage their creativity and curiosity. Hope to see you all there! Creative Arts This week Copacabana Public School presented their Years 3-6 Musical ‘ABBA-CA-DABRA’. It was a massive week for both the students and Teachers, with three musicals performed over three days. The children should be extremely proud of their effort and commitment to presenting polished performances. We appreciate the positive feedback we have had from parents and the community and the support they have given to their children. THANKYOU to Mrs. Woodham for her dedication and hours of work conducting this great musical. Mr. Rippon

Copacabana Athletics Carnival Thursday the 20th of July was Copacabana Public School’s Athletics Carnival. We were extremely lucky with the sunny weather and the change of venue to Mingara Regional Athletics Centre made for an excellent level of competition, with a few records broken! A big thank you to all of the parent volunteers and the Kincumber High students who assisted on the day. Without your support, the carnival would not have been possible and it definitely made the day run smoother. Well done to the children for participating in their events and displaying outstanding behaviour the whole day. It was great to see the children encouraging each other during their events. Congratulations to the following students for qualifying for the Zone Athletics Carnival which is also being held at Mingara Regional Athletics Centre on Monday the 21st of August: Lucas B, Sophie B, Gabby C, Lucca C, Hayley C, Grace C, Maya D, Lara D, Taj F, Chloe F, William G, Ethan G, Callum G, Summer H, Zane H, Bailey H, Kai H, Cooper H, Holly K, Yaan K, Leila K, Tess K, Reggie K, Chloe K, Tamika-Lee L, Tylah L, Joey L, Kaiden M, Jacob M, Hayley M, Jayden M, Emma O, Mitchell O, Sam P, Archie P, Grace R, Jemma R, Alessandro R, Emily R, Cooper R, Aden S, Oliver S, Kyah S, Liam S, Gemma S, Sharma S, Darcy S, Hayley S, Imogen T, Cooper T, Max T, Dylan W, Liana W, Nicolas W, Jade Y and Skyler Y. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL SURVEY Following feedback from our athletics carnival survey in 2016, we moved our carnival to Mingara this year and changed the format. As always, we value parent feedback on our school events and would like to ask again if you could complete this year's survey to help us continually improve on the events we hold. If changes are to be made, this forum is the best way to achieve it. It certainly is a much more productive and positive way of providing feedback, rather than going to social media to vent frustrations. Thank you again for your support of our amazing school. Hi, my name is Jessica McKay and I’m a student teacher completing my internship in Mrs Walters’ Year 3/4 class this term. I’m very excited to be undertaking the final hurdle of my degree at Copacabana Public school. They have an excellent reputation for supporting the growth of their student teachers, as well as being a wonderful school community. I have previously completed placements at Point Clare Public School and Budgewoi Public school. In my spare time, I have volunteered to help with the kindergarten students at the International Football and Tennis School to gain more experience as a teacher. The reasons surrounding my desire to become a teacher are extensive but entwined with my passion for this career path. For me, it is not necessarily about teaching the high achieving students that can grasp difficult concepts quickly; it is about supporting the students that need encouragement and extra motivation to keep them engaged. It is my role as an educator to be a mentor, a motivator and the constant reassurance to inspire them to reach their potential and extend this beyond what they believe they can achieve. I hope to be the teacher that gets my students excited to come to school everyday. Second to teaching, I have a strong passion for travelling and experiencing the different cultures that the world has to offer. Some of the countries I have already visited include: England, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Croatia and New Zealand. I still have many more on my list to visit and return to. I’m also not afraid to admit that I thoroughly enjoy kids animated movies. Some of my favourites are: How to train your dragon and Despicable me! I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible throughout this next chapter in my teaching journey!

Chris Mensforth Sports Enthusiast PSSA Boys Soccer A massive congratulations to the Copa boys soccer team! Last term they played round 4 against Woy Woy in the NSW PSSA knockout competition. In an extremely close game the boys came away with a win and defeated Woy Woy 1 nil. All boys played an outstanding game, showing great teamwork and sportsmanship. Today the soccer team played Wyong in round 5 of the PSSA knockout competition. Unfortunately the boys were defeated 2 - 0 and are now knocked out of the competition. As always, the boys showed so much class and skill. Well done to the team for proving that effort really does earn success. All players have consistently shown commitment and energy every single week at training and during our games. You should be extremely proud of your efforts and success across the competition. Well done Copa! Miss Newton
