Week 3 Dear Parents, What a wonderful afternoon we had for our Mother’s Day spectacular last Friday. Special thanks to Mrs Sutton for her organisation of this annual event. It always goes off without a hitch and we seem to continually increase the amount of Mums and Grandmothers that attend each year. Thank you to all our amazing Copa Mum’s for the continued support you give our school! Our Year 3 and Year 5 students did a great job with their NAPLAN tests this week. The results of these tests should arrive at school near the end of Term 3. While NAPLAN gives us a snapshot of how each child in Australia is performing in specific areas of literacy and numeracy, it is important to know that they do not assess all of what makes our children exceptional and unique. The people who create and score these tests don’t know that some of our students love to sing, are good at drawing or can teach others how to use a computer program. They have not seen the way that some of our students can dance with style, play basketball skilfully or speak confidently to a large group. They do not know that your friends count on you to be there for them when they are sad. They do not know that Copacabana kids participate in nippers, help their Mum and Dad or look after their brother or sister. They do not know that our students are caring, thoughtful and that every day they try their best. So when NAPLAN results do arrive, please remember that there is no single way to ‘test’ all of the wonderful things that make our children who they are. TERM 2 / WEEK 3

Trivia Night We are looking forward to hosting another trivia night on Saturday 19th May. This year the theme will be “A night in Paris”. Please RSVP to the P&C or at the school office. A table of 10 is $100 or you can pay $10 and we will put you on a table. There will be many prizes on offer through the night and it’s a great opportunity to socialise and meet new families (and try to beat the teachers ☺). Dogs on School Grounds No dogs are allowed on our school grounds. If you see someone with their dog on the grounds could you please remind them of this rule, which has been made to ensure the safety of every child. The Council rangers may be called if a dog is seen on the school grounds. Something of interest – Dogs on School Grounds: Under the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998 No 87 owners of dogs must: · Be 18 years of age or over · Leash their dog when in a public place · Ensure their dog wears a collar and identification

tag when in a public place · Ensure their dog does not enter a food

consumption area or wild life protection area · Ensure their dog does not enter a school or child

care playground and any other place declared prohibited to dogs by Council

The NSW Consolidated Act pertaining to dogs states dogs are prohibited in some public places. Section (e) of the Act specifically refers to schools and states that this applies to dogs whether they are leashed or unleashed. The exceptions are assistance dogs that are specifically trained to assist those who are sight or hearing impaired.

Mother's Day Stall Our annual Mother's Day stall was back this year, due to popular demand, and it was a great success. All the children were so excited to pick out a gift for Mum, Nan or another special someone. In the end, we sold almost all the gifts and made a profit of about $330 that the P&C will put to good use. I'd like to say a big thank you to Kim, Clare, Jess and Gemma who helped on the day. Keep and ear out for our Father's Day Stall later in the year. Lucy Wenzke

Canteen News

Welcome back to school and Term 2. I hope everyone enjoyed the break and are ready for the adventures of another school term.

IMPROVE YOUR CHILD’S MOOD WITH FOOD! In our busy lives we are often rushing out the door to get to work and you hear yourself, like that broken record, asking the children to get ready over and over again. Before you know it, things have escalated and there is no time for breakfast! Sounds all too familiar! We all know how important it is to ‘start the day off on the right foot’ and that eating a good healthy breakfast can be the make or break of having a good day. After you begin to understand how the food your little ones are eating (or not eating) could be influencing their behaviour, the next question is, what can I do about it?

Don’t worry! There are some very simple but very effective steps you can try.

Add in naturally sweet food. Adding in a couple extra servings of fruits or naturally sweet veggies (think sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, corn) each day will do a few wonderful things. Choose the things your child likes and encourage them to at least try new tastes. These colorful foods are packed with a nutritional punch and sweet tooths will be naturally satisfied. What is your favourite naturally sweet vegie?

Start checking food labelling. Food has changed drastically over the past 30 years and so have food related problems. Products once considered healthy can now be worlds apart from what they used to be. Seemingly harmless foods like bread, yoghurt, juice and muesli bars can either be perfectly natural and healthy, or they can be full of unwelcome additives. Get your children involved and have a look at the ingredients to bring more awareness to your grocery shopping. See if you can spot the differences between similar products?

Five ingredients or less

Now that you’re getting the hang of reading the ingredients, think about choosing products that have five ingredients or less. This tip will help avoid some of those additives that might affect behaviour and development. If it has five ingredients or more, (especially ones you can’t pronounce the name of) it might be more of a food-like product than an actual food. Can you find a product you like eating with less than five ingredients?

These suggestions are simple, but it it’s often the simple changes that are the most effective and doable! Try choosing one of these simple steps. Get your children involved and let them tell us at the canteen which one you are trying.

BREAKFAST IS SERVED! We’ve got you covered! Starting this term we will be offering breakfast at the canteen from 8:30 - 8:45.

ITEMS ON OFFER

Yogurt $2.50 Muesli cup $3.00 Add frozen berries $3.00 (fruit salad, yogurt, muesli) Vegemite toast $1.00 Pikelets with jam 0.50ea Hot Chocolate $2.50 Milk or Juice $2.00 Smoothie $3.50 We always need volunteers. You don’t need to be an amazing cook, just a smiling face for the children. You would be amazed how much pleasure children get out of seeing their mum, dad or even grandparent helping out in the canteen. Come along and meet some new people, have a laugh and put a smile on your childs face!
