Week 2, Term 4 13/10/2020 Hi Everyone, What a wonderful start back to school we have seen, with all students making a concerted effort to be the best learner that they can be. We have introduced a new play process whereby students can visit the library at lunch times to play board games, lego or XOs. For students who are enjoying outside play, it is important that they have a hat. Please check with your child to ensure they have a hat at school and, if not, hats are available at the office for $15. Office Hours As a small school, Depot Hill State School is only resourced with an administrative assistant who works for half of the time. As a result of this, there will be times in the day where the office is unstaffed as all staff are teaching elsewhere. Our office hours have changed slightly this term with Mrs Cindy Laidlaw working 7am - 10.30am each morning. If you have enquiries regarding uniforms, payments or permission notes it would be appreciated if, where possible, you could make them during these hours. There may be no one in the office at other times of the day but if you leave a phone message we will endeavour to get back to you by 5pm. Camp Attached to this newsletter, you will find a permission form for our Yr 3-6 Coolwaters Camp. This is only an initial permission form and more paperwork, including detailed itineraries, medical forms and lists of what to bring will be sent home in November. We will also hold a camp meeting on Thursday, 26 th November to answer any questions which parents may have. Payments for camp are due on the 30 th November so please see the office if you would like to set up a payment plan. Swimming/Learning Club/Basketball Our students are excited to have Swimming lessons and after school activities begin this week. If you require permission forms for these activities please drop into the office. Car Boot Sale The local CWA have volunteered to help our school raise funds for our upcoming camp and lunch box club. Many thanks to Maree McDonald who has offered to organise a car boot sale for us on Saturday, 7 th November at our school. We will be discussing this at this week’s P & C meeting and will advertise the details in upcoming newsletters. P & C Meeting We will hold our monthly P & C meeting this Thursday, 15th October. These meetings occur on the third Thursday of every month and we would love to see more parents attending to give input into decisions which are made for our school. This week we will be camp, student code of conduct, the upcoming carboot sale, tuckshop and swimming carnival catering. Many thanks to Reanna Olive, who has agreed to take on the role of treasurer for this term and a big thank you to our outgoing treasurer, Jess Cook, who has been filling the role this year.

Head Lice We have had some confirmed cases of head lice in our school this week. I would encourage all parents to check their children's hair using a fine tooth comb and conditioner. If your children do have head lice please treat with treatments which are available from the chemist. Unfortunately it will take at least 3 weeks of once a week checks and combing to eliminate the problem. Washing sheets and pillow cases are also necessary.

Have a wonderful week. Mrs Elizabeth Jacobson

YEAR 1/2 CLASS

I am thrilled to announce that we have had a wonderful and productive start to the term! Well done students! As always, thank you to the teacher aides and helpers who work so hard in our classroom to keep things running smoothly. English The poems we are exploring this week are ‘Six Cuddly Kittens’ and ‘Five little owls’ (see below). As indicated last week we will look for poetic features such as rhythm, rhyme, syllables, alliteration and repetition. We are also learning to identify nouns and noun groups, pronouns, verbs and adjectives. Six Cuddly Kittens Six cuddly kittens in an old cosy cot, Furry and fluffy and purring a lot, Skulking and slinking with long

outstretched paws, At the base of the cot, sharpening

claws, Longing for mother cat, where could

she be? She’s stalking a field mouse so

stealthily, Here she comes now with a satisfied

grin, ‘Meow, meow’ she cries, let dinner

begin! Five little owls Five little owls in an old elm tree, Fluffy and puffy as owls could be, Blinking and winking with big round eyes At the big round moon that hung in the skies. As I pass beneath I could hear one say, “There’ll be mouse for supper, there will today!” Then all of them hooted, “Tu-whit, tu-whoo Yes mouse for supper, hoo hoo, hoo hoo!”

Maths Students have enjoyed learning about money… see if your child can answer the relevant questions below!

Have a great week! Miss Katie Black

YEAR 5/6 CLASS

Dear Families, What a wonderful first two weeks back it has been. We are straight into our new units and it always impresses me how much prior knowledge the students have. This term we are asking all things ‘matter’. In English the students have been posed with the question ‘does it matter if poems don’t sound or look the same?’ This has sparked many great conversations and I’m sure opinions will change or further develop as the term goes on. The first poem we are looking at comes from a book called ‘Bin Chicken’ – yes bin chicken! An absolutely wonderful book about own dear friend the Ibis and how she has overcome many changes in her environment and now calls herself A SURVIVOR. I just loved this analogy and I think speaks to our tough Depot Hill kids so well. I look forward to our Poe-tree growing further as we deepen our knowledge and learn to analyse poems.

In Science we are answering ‘does it matter if we change the state of matter?’ This physical sciences topic is always a fun one as it leads to many messy and intriguing experiments exploring solids, liquids and gas. Bring on the melting chocolate!

Our Maths topics will vary as the weeks go on but last week we had fun exploring and constructing 3D shapes in the most delicious way. Hands on activities are always such memorable and enjoying learning moments and it is great to see all students interacting in a positive way.

Our final question of matter is considering ‘does it matter how food is stored?’ This is our Design Technology unit that Mrs Jacobson will be teaching where the students will investigate how different materials can be used for different purposes and how they can design a suitable and sustainable method for storage of food products. This is fantastic knowledge that will support our lunchbox club better store and use the wonderful donations of food we receive.

Finally, a few new additions to our room this week have been some piiirrattee and silhouette faces. We have discussed the idea of ‘Pirate Nup’ and ‘Captain Yet’ and how our positive or negative thoughts effect how we succeed in learning. The students receive feedback from each other and of course their teaching through sticky notes in order reflect on their learning and choices throughout the day. I am very proud that the students have responded well to this idea so far. Our silhouette art is a bit of PBL focus as we worked together to create splatter art with the notion that ‘we can create something beautiful together instead of on our own’. I can’t wait to display them in our room. Please enjoy a collage of photos from our room - Have a great week ! Miss Steph Ruddick
