Week 16 - Grandmother’s FanWedges & Curves
CuttinG FabriC PieCesRefer to the Cutting List on Page 3 and the templates on page 4 to cut the fabric pieces.
PieCinG the bloCk1. Refer to Week 1 General Instructions to
piece the wedges.
2. Trim away excess fabric and paper on bottom curved edge by cutting on the solid ¼" line. If you are not using a see-thru vellum and can’t see this line on the back side, place the block on a light box to mark the line first. Trim away excess fabric and paper on gray guidelines at sides of block (⅛" from solid black line) leaving a ⅜" seam allowance.
3. Pin Location #7 fabric around bottom edge matching clips to seams and straight short edges to sides of block. Don’t worry if it’s a little short. You still have an ⅛" to trim off. Make additional clips as needed to ease fabric around curve. Use plenty of pins. You don’t want to sew in any tucks. I like to pin with the head of the pin hanging off the edge, making them easy to remove as I sew.

6. Square block to 5" by cutting on the solid black line on the top 2 sides, then using a square ruler to trim the bottom 2 sides. Remove paper and trim excess seam allowance from top curve.
4. Turn over to paper side and sew on the black dashed seam line. Press seam toward Location #7.
5. Prepare fabric for Location #8 and position over top curve, lining up straight edges with ⅜" guidelines. Use a few glue dots to hold it in place and applique using your favorite method. I used a narrow zig-zag with matching thread.
