The Year 12 Formal was a very special evening with the vast majority of teachers present to celebrate with the Year 12 students. The students were immaculately dressed and it was hard to think of them as school students when they looked so impressive. Year 12 Formal

To increase the opportunity for our Year 11 Drama students to perform, Ms Mooney organised a performance evening. It was very well received by the audience with comments being made about it being the best student performance seen for a very long time.

Congratulations to Year 11 Drama and Mrs Mooney for an amazing performance night!

We also had an external provider called ‘Drive to Survive’ present to our year 10 and 11 year groups. The feedback was that the presentation was of high quality and really engaged the students who attended. Thank

you to Ian Luff and his team for educating our Year 10 & 11 cohorts on road and driver safety!

Renee competed at the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships the last 3 days of Term 3. She came 2nd in hammer throw (2 cms behind first place) and 2nd in Discus and third in Shot Put. She will now complete at the

Australian National All Schools in Perth in December. Congratulations Renee!

The school assisted in two of our students receiving scholarships towards their travel expenses to attend elite sporting opportunities representing the state of NSW and Australia. Congratulations to Renee and Natalie for

receiving the Rotary Scholarships to assist them with pursuing their sporting endeavors!

Building Strong Men The Journeyman’s Challenge

28th September 2019 The Journey began with the eleven young men arriving at Strong Nation Church Windsor, Friday at 9pm. Sleeping quarters were assigned and we settled down for a movie, “Forever Strong”. This movie is a biograph-ical account of a rugby coach, Larry Gelwix, based in the USA. Coach Gelwix has been very successful at building rugby teams from troubled youth, with the motto, “I want you to be strong on the field, so that you will be strong off the field”. His success is in Building Strong Men, hence the name of our program. At midnight all young men were in bed, however there was little sleep. Regardless of their lack of sleep they were not disrup-tive, but quiet and patient. The alarm went off at 4am and the young men were ushered into a bus where they were taken to The Ex-plorer’s Tree, just outside Katoomba; and with the guidance of eight experienced mentors, the eleven young men commenced the challenge of walking The Six Foot Track. The walk began with much excitement due to a lot of adrenalin pumping through their veins. However, just over an hour into the walk, a couple of young men hit the proverbial wall and started to show a little resent-ment. This was their first challenge, and I am glad to say that through the support of their mentors and their mates, they pushed through to completing the first stage; the 2 hour 20-minute walk to Megalong Cemetery. At the cemetery the challenge was given to the young men to consider the ancestors that have come before them; the challenges their ancestors must have faced carving out their life in more primitive days. An hour breakfast break with egg & bacon rolls seemed to refresh the journeymen as they set off towards the Cox’s River Suspension Bridge. The ups and downs of this part of the track became more difficult, however the young men seemed to strengthen their resolve. There was no complaining, just the odd encouragement to keep going. This was such a satisfying aspect of the walk, along with the red-bellied black snake that graced us with his or her presence. All safety was observed as we took notice of this amazing creature. After another 2 hours of walking the suspension bridge came into view. Looking at the bridge a question about personal life challenges was raised to all present; “what challenges are you currently facing?” and “how do you intend to overcome that challenge?”. Then the challenge of crossing the bridge was put before them. One by one the young men each, on their own, traversed the swinging suspension bridge. This was a great achieve-ment by all, but for many it was a very nerve-wracking experience which they pressed through in spite of their fears. The challenge was then put to the young men to metaphorically leave something behind as we cross back over the bridge. They all declared something they are letting go of to leave behind and then proceeded to cross the bridge again. These bridge crossings were a brilliant Rights-of-Passage ceremony, which seemed to have instant impact. Lunch was then had, and each of the young men displayed traits of genuine bonding as we ate lunch and paddled in the nice cool river below the bridge. After an hour lunch, and some great down-time, the journey back home was instigated. A 2-hour trek back along the trail we walked in on, which was now more up than down. This was tiring and most likely the hardest part of the journey. However, with no alternative, every young man strengthened his resolve and pushed through pain barriers, both physical and mental. On one occasion, when a young man was slowing and strug-gling to keep up, one of the other young men put his arm around him and encouraged him to keep going, (this was my highlight). A great example about what Building Strong Men is about. When the finish line was in sight, there was new-found energy amongst the group and the young men gathered themselves to run the last fifty metres to victory over the challenge. We arrived back at the bus at 3pm and travelled back to the Hawkesbury with the aid of slushies and ice-cream. We had all young men picked up or delivered home before 6pm Satur-day evening.

All in all, I think this Journeyman’s Challenge was the best part of this program I have ever been involved with over the last 3 years. Only time will tell what effect it will have on the young men. However, the bonding, the mutual feeling of achievement and the encourage-ment I saw on this challenge would indicate that each young man was greatly impacted and made stronger for their journey into manhood. I look forward to seeing the ultimate outcomes as we watch these young men continuing to walk their journey into becoming Strong Men. Ric Burrell
