Tawharanui History
Tawharanui Regional Park is an open sanctuary, where native plants and animals including kiwi can live and breed successfully without the threat of predators.
The park is located on the Tokatū Peninsula, which takes its name from the distinctive ‘upstanding rock’ located at Tokatū Point. This regional park boasts some of Auckland’s most beautiful white sand beaches, rolling pastures, shingled bays native coastal forest and regenerating wetlands.
Tāwhara – nui literally means ‘the abundant edible bracts of the kiekie vine’ (Freycinetia baueriana). This place name is used here in a symbolic sense, reflecting the rich resources of the area, as expressed in the following whakataukī or proverbial saying,
He wha- ta-whara ki uta,
He kiko ta-mure ki tai.
‘The flowering bracts of the kiekie on the land; the flesh of the snapper in the sea.’ This saying describes the qualities of an ideal living environment, which contained the abundant resources of both the land and sea
Māori lived in this area for more than 800 years. Until the 1870s the park was occupied by a small hapü (sub tribe) of the Te Kawerau people called Ngäti Raupö.
Täwharanui provided a rich variety of marine and forest resources. Waikōkōwai (Anchor Bay) provided a valued source of kōkōwai or red ochre, which was used for ceremonial and decorative purposes. The people lived mainly around the catchment of the Mangatawhiri Stream. Near the park entrance was a significant pā known as “Ōpōnui” and above the stream outlet is “Pā-hï” or “lofty fortified settlement.”
After 1870 the Martin, Jones and Young families developed Tāwharanui as a farm. Kauri timber was milled and shingle was extracted from the park, creating the so-called Jones Bay Lagoon. The Auckland Regional Council (ARC) purchased the park from the Georgetti family in 1973.
The Tāwharanui Marine Reserve was established in September 2011. People are welcome to dive, snorkel, swim and visit the reserve. However, all marine life continues to be totally protected and any kind of fishing, netting, gathering shellfish or otherwise interfering with marine life is prohibited.

Camp Boundaries
At all times (except for when participating in an activity) the boundaries for camp are outlined above.
No one should venture beyond the road leading away from where we are camping and no one should venture over the other side of the hill. You awe however allowed to the top but not down the other side leading away from the Camp.
Unless specified feel free to use the beach for a swim, right IN FRONT of the campgrounds. Please do not venture away from there i.e. towards where the Snorkeling Activity will be operating, unless you are told to do so otherwise.
DO NOT swim at the beach unless a group of supervisors are down there with you.
Please DO NOT swim out more than 50m from shore. This becomes a pain for those supervising should we need to attempt a rescue.
The beach is OUT OF BOUNDS between the hours of 19:45 and 06:45. During this time the sand dunes become the new camp boundary. Early morning surfers will need to be accompanied by a group of supervisors.
Walking to and from an activity please make sure that you stay with your assigned timetable and travel with a group. There should be no one wondering off alone, otherwise we go into Camp Lockdown.
Camp Rules:
· No alcohol
· No drugs
· No smoking
· No open fires
· No littering, all food scraps in the rubbish bags
· If you are going to the beach in free time a 4th year must be with you

Emergency procedures
Missing camper:
· Everyone is to assemble back to the main Marquee regardless of what you are doing. If you are at an activity proceed back there with your group. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR GROUP.
· If you are completing a water activity you will firstly assemble at the beach where your group leader will cross you off a checklist. You will then travel back to the Marquee with your group, where an entire camp roll will be called.
· Group and camp leaders will then call a roll and do a head count.
· This information will then be passed on to the Camp Leader and the Lecturers and they will take it from there.
Flash Flood/Tsunami:
· In the event of either of these head to high ground. All campers will make for The Hill located behind the camp. Leave all your belongings behind
Fire:
· If you are completing a land-based activity, everyone is to assemble at the Marquee, where your Group Leader will cross you off a checklist.
· If you are completing a water-based activity everyone will assemble on the beach where your group leader will cross you off a checklist, then head back to the Marquee.
· All groups will head down the road away from the camp.
· Leave all belongings behind and proceed with your group.
Minor injuries on Land:
· Inform a 4th year or a lecturer of what has happened and wait for assistance. If you are able to walk and it is safe to do so, make your way to the closest shade to where you are or too the Marquee.
· All groups have a First Aid Kit so minor injuries should be able to be treated effectively on site.
Minor injuries on Beach/Water:
· Inform a 4th year or a lecturer of what has happened and wait for assistance.
· If in the water call for assistance if necessary and make for shore.
· If on the beach and you are unable to walk to assistance, try and move yourself into the shade and send for help. There should be a supervisor around at all times patrolling the activities.
· All groups have a First Aid Kit so minor injuries should be able to be treated effectively on site.
Major injuries on Land:
· Stay where you are and call for help.
· Do not move the person unless you absolutely have to.
· If three people are on the scene have one stay with the injured and send the other to look for a 4th year, a supervisor or lecturer.
· If they are unconscious check the ABC’s and then move them into the recovery position. If you are unsure of how to do this, quickly find someone who does while you wait for help.
Major injuries on Beach/Water
· If in the water make sure that you keep their head above the water and tell them to remain calm. Alert one of the supervisors or 4th years of what has happened and make for shore.
· Once on shore try not to move the person too much as too much movement could cause extra and unnecessary damage and hurt the patient.
· If on land remain where you are. Send for someone to find a 4th year, supervisor or lecturer. Try not to move the patient unless you absolutely have to.
· If they are unconscious check the ABC’s and then move them into the recovery position. If you are unsure of how to do this, quickly find someone who does while you wait for help.
Drowning’s
· There will always be a group of supervisors patrolling the beach and water based activities in front of camp.
· If you need to be recused, raise your hand high above your head to alert the supervisors on shore and anyone else nearby. Please use common sense and don’t do this as a joke.
· Upon witnessing a rescue in progress please do not crowd or try to help the rescuer unless they ask for help, give them the space they need to carry out the rescue as you may just get in their way and end up being rescued yourself.
· If you witness a drowning and you are the closest person to them, make sure that as you swim over to them that you tell them to keep calm and lie on their back. It will be your job to make sure that you keep their head above the water and check that their airway is open to the air. Make for shore.
· If you reach shore first before a supervisor arrives, immediately call for help and check for the persons ABC’s if unconscious.
· If the victim isn’t responsive, isn’t breathing and the supervisor or rescuer hasn’t arrived yet, proceed to give CPR, performing two rescue breaths first then 30 compressions. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to perform CPR, any form of first aid is better than nothing.
· There will always be a group of supervisors around patrolling the beach on a regular basis so there should be no need for a student to do this.
