After 9/11, Dr. Naturale directed the New York State response to the World Trade Center disaster, served as project director for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Disaster Technical Assistance Center (SAMHSA DTAC), helped launch the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the BP Oil Spill Distress Helpline and the National Disaster Distress Helpline. She was the architect of the Boston Marathon Bombing Behavioral Health response and has been assisting in program development efforts as well as victim, family and provider forums for the Las Vegas Harvest Festival, Pulse Nightclub, Parkland, Thousand Oaks, Pittsburgh Tree of Life, Virginia Beach and El Paso shooting incidents. She is also currently training Humanitarian Aid workers for the European Union. Raymond Cava, MD, FACS Raymond Cava, MD, FACS, is a trauma surgeon currently practicing at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He currently serves as the medical director for Parkview Trauma Services. He earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College and completed his general surgical residency at the University of Illinois Hospitals, both in Chicago, Illinois. In 2000, Dr. Cava completed a fellowship in trauma and surgical critical care at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. He has presented nationally at numerous trauma meetings and has published several trauma related research papers in peer-reviewed journals. Howard Mell, MD, MPH, CPE, FACEP Howard “Howie” Mell, MD, MPH, CPE, FACEP, Dr. Mell received his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine at Rockford. Prior to that, he received a Master of Public Health Degree emphasizing Environmental and Occupational Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Public Health while serving as a firefighter / paramedic in the Chicago suburbs. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Mell is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine in both Emergency Medicine (EM) and in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and is a Certified Physician Executive through the Certifying Commission in Medical Management. Dr. Mell serves as a Reservist Emergency Physician for Vituity (formerly CEP-America), and he is currently assigned to the HSHS Health System on the Illinois side of suburban St. Louis. He produced the "So What" and “So What? 2.0” podcasts for ACEP and Emergency Medicine News respectively and lectures nationally in a variety of settings. Dr. Mell is a past Chairperson of the ACEP Public Relations Committee and is a Spokesperson for the College. He won ACEP's award for "Spokesperson of the Year" in 2014. Highlights of Dr. Mell’s EMS Career include directing the first protocol in the United States to authorize the use of Tranexamic Acid (TXA) to treat hemorrhagic shock by ALS ground ambulances, serving as a flight physician for Cleveland Metro Life Flight, and being the Medical Director for the official city "after action report" on the shootings in Aurora, Colorado.” Chris Scheumann, BSN, RN, CCRN, CEN, CPEN, CFRN, TCRN, NREMT-P, PI Chris Scheumann, BSN, RN, CCRN, CEN, CPEN, CFRN, TCRN, NREMT-P, PI, started his medical career in 1991 as an emergency medical technician (EMT) working on a 911 ambulance in Decatur, Indiana. In 1993, Chris began working as an Advanced EMT and then achieved his paramedic certification in 1995 from Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition to working in the prehospital arena for many years, he started the Adams Memorial Hospital Paramedic Program in 2000, where he served as lead instructor for over five years. In 2005, Chris obtained his nursing degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana and began working as a staff nurse in the emergency department. In 2007, he began working in the surgical trauma intensive care unit at Parkview Randallia Hospital In Fort Wayne, Indiana and later began working for the trauma services department at Parkview, where he currently serves as the Trauma Outreach Coordinator. In addition to this role, Chris is currently a travel nurse working in emergency departments across the US western coast. Darren Braude, MD, MPH, EMT-P Darren Braude, MD, MPH, EMT-P, started his EMS career in 1985 and has maintained his EMS paramedic certification continuously since 1991. Darren attended Colgate University, New York Medical College and then completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at UCSF- Fresno and worked for the Himalayan Rescue Association in Nepal before settling in at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in 2000. Darren is currently a Tenured Professor of Emergency Medicine with a cross-appointment in Anesthesiology and the Tim Fleming Endowed Professor of EMS. He is currently Chief of the Division of Prehospital, Austere and Disaster Medicine, Medical Director of the UNM EMS Academy and several EMS agencies, a field response physician as well as a Flight Physician with the UNM flight program, Lifeguard Air Emergency Services. He has also been moonlighting in small rural and community Emergency Departments his entire career. His academic interests include, but not limited to, airway management, cervical spine immobilization (or hopefully the lack thereof) and antiemetic agents. He wrote a textbook entitled Rapid Sequence Intubation and Rapid Sequence Airway: an Airway911 Guide and has over 60 peer-reviewed publications. He has been an invited speaker at ACEP Scientific Assembly, SAEM Annual Meeting, SMACC, NAEMSP Annual Meeting and USC Essentials of Emergency Medicine, hosts an occasional airway and prehospital care segment for EM:Rap and is the 2014 recipient of the ACEP Teaching Award. Dr. Braude discloses that he is a partner in First Airway, LLC, an company that offers airway education for EMS professionals. Debbie Bowerman, RN Debbie Bowerman, RN, started her career in the medical field working as a certified surgical technologist. She worked in this role for 11 years before obtaining her registered nursing degree. Debbie began working as a staff nurse in a very busy, fast paced emergency department at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. Debbie was working in the emergency department the evening of one of the worst mass casualty events in US history, the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting. In recent years, she has presented her experiences and lessons learned from that tragedy with many audiences around the world. Debbie is currently working as s PACU nurse, as well as a transport RN with Life Flight Ground Transport. Symposium Objectives 1. Outline optimal care in the prehospital and hospital settings. 2. Integrate new technology and devices for monitoring and treatment in trauma and critical care. 3. Outline methods to improve mass casualty and disaster planning at your home institution. 4. Plan an evidence-based approach to current controversies in trauma and critical care patient management. 5. Recognize current concepts in surgical airway management techniques. 6. Discuss approaches to managing airways utilizing the rapid sequence airway concept. 7. Implement methods for utilization of medication assisted airway management. 8. Outline a plan for managing triage of mass casualty events.
