Aileen standing up for GuyraOPINION: Guyra is at a

crossroads and with the up-coming local governmentelections it is important thatthe people of Guyra have asay in the future of our re-gion. I was saddened to hearthat Dot Vickery was notgoing to stand at the nextelections as I believe she is agreat representative of ourarea and has been long, longbefore she was ever a Coun-cillor. I know Dot will con-tinue to advocate for Guyraand district even when noton Council.

I have been a resident ofGuyra longer than I havelived anywhere else and havealways had some involve-ment with the communitywhether it was as a Pre-school mum, a Rotarian andmore recently through theGuyra and District Chamberof Commerce. Guyra is agreat place to live and thereis so much on offer, yet thereis also so much more poten-tial for our area. We musthave a say in what happensnext for Armidale RegionalCouncil.

When nominations opennext month I will be puttingforward my name. Peter

Ducat last week said: “I seethe upcoming Council elec-tions as an opportunity forour region to continue mov-ing ahead, as it has in thelast year, and this can bedone by electing the rightCouncillors.” It remains to beseen if I am one of the ‘right’Councillors but I feelstrongly about getting thingsdone and growing our region.

I accept and know therewill be detractors, that is allpart of a local democracy andhelps to keep me account-

able. I advised the membersat the last Guyra & DistrictChamber of Commerce meet-ing that I will stepping downfrom my role as President sothat there is no conflict of in-terest and last week at theGuyra Rotary Club’schangeover dinner I was ableto step down in my role asPresident and welcomeJenny Cumming to the role.

In the coming weeks I willorganise a gathering to talkabout my vision for Guyraand its role within Armidale

Regional Council. If, in themeantime, you would like totalk to me I would love tohear from you.

If you are passionate aboutGuyra and would like to sup-port me, then please contactme on 0417 079 307 or [email protected]

We will be STRONGER -TOGETHER - UNITED.

Restockers again lifted

weights in an effort to se‐cure requirements. Therewere insufficient sheep formarket quote.

AWEXreport that this sale was thesmallest offering of Merinofleece wool in over 8 years. The first day of sales pro‐duced the largest gains fol‐lowed by some smaller butencouraging gains on thefinal day. The 20; 21; and 22micron indicators have allclosed the week at fresh 20year highs. The recovery inthe market over the past 3weeks has left the NorthernRegion Indicator just 40cents short of its Marchhigh point. 21,101 baleswere sold nationally for theweek with a passed in rate

Major buyers in‐cluded Techwool, Fox & Lil‐lie and Aust MerinoExporters with good sup‐port from most of the trade.Next week’s sale is the lastof the 2016/17 season withthe new season commenc‐ing immediately for a fort‐night of sales beforeheading into the annualthree week recess. New England sheep produc-ers could save thousands ofdollars doing less work

A typical Merino producer inthis region is drenching ewesfive or six times per year, yetstill sees significant signs ofbarber’s pole worm each year.On the contrary, producersusing the WormBoss programgenerally drench one or twotimes less each year and signsof barber’s pole worm are in-frequent.

While it seems a contradic-tion to drench less and havefewer worm problems, theWormBoss program canachieve just that. The Worm-Boss program uses the princi-ples investigated in the IPMSproject run by Dr Lewis Kahn, which was based on manyyears of work in this area byNSW DPI, CSIRO and theUniversity of New England.

Deb Maxwell, ParaBoss Op-erations Manager and work-shop presenter, said, “TheIPMS project showed morethan a $5000 benefit/1000ewes for WormBoss over typi-cal regional worm control ef-forts.”

A free WormBoss Workshopwill be held near Deepwateron Wednesday, 12 July whereproducers can find out exactlyhow to implement the Worm-Boss program and benefitfrom better results and lesswork.

Meat and Livestock Aus-tralia’s Producer Demonstra-tion Sites Program is fundingnine workshops over three

years in the New England re-gion. It is also supportingsome participating producersto implement the WormBossprogram, including subsidiesfor a Drench Resistance Testand routine worm egg counts(WormTests). A few more co-operators are still beingsought.

The purpose of a “producerdemonstration site” - in thiscase it’s a dozen or more pro-ducers on their own farms - isto provide real examples toother local producers aboutimplementation and results.

This workshop will be heldat Jude Cox’s property, Kurra-jong. Jude and her son, Je-remy Phipps are projectparticipants and believe theprogram is making a positivedifference.

At this workshop the featurepresentations include how touse the prepared lambing pad-docks, preparing low worm-risk weaner paddocks, theBarbervax vaccine, and thedifferent types of worms.

After the workshop, NigelBrown from the LLS in GlenInnes will conduct a free wormegg count training practical, which is limited to 10 NTLLSratepayers (to book, contactNigel directly on 0419 434087). Fiona Macarthur willalso conduct a question andanswer session on Barbervax.

RSVP is essential by Friday,7 July; contact Deb Maxwell0437 524 163 or [email protected].

Small steps for Rotary

Guyra Rotary Club held its71st Changeover last Fridayevening, 23 June at RaftersRestaurant.

Jenny Cumming was in-ducted as President for the2017-18 year. She said shelooked forward to the chal-lenges of being president inthe year ahead and thankedDistrict Governor-Elect BobRyan and his wife Margaretfor attending, as well as Ro-tarians from Glen Innes,Armidale and Uralla; alsoGuyra community groupswho made the evening so spe-cial.

In her report to the assem-bled Rotarians and guests, outgoing President, AileenMacDonald said that in hertime as President, she haslearnt to take small steps in-stead of gigantic leaps. Shealso took aim at Hunter NewEngland Health for the lackof consultation over the failedHelipad Project and the sub-sequent re-allocation of fundsraised towards the GP Clinic.

“Our club raised moneyover the last three to fouryears because Hunter NewEngland Health, the Doctorsand the community wanted ahelipad. We were told$80,000 was needed in orderfor the project to start andour club, together with the

Hospital Auxiliary, workedhard and raised the moneythrough donations, raffles, snow balls, auctions andmany other activities.

“Once we had raised the re-quired funds we were thentold that Hunter New Eng-land Health no longer sup-ported a Helipad and the costof the project had blown outto more than $400,000. Weknew we could not continueto raise money for whatseemed an unachievable goalso needed a rethink.

“Hunter New EnglandHealth then said they neededto expand the Guyra GPClinic and we could put ourfunds towards that. I have totell you, once bitten twice shyand it was not an easy deci-sion to make and I am surethat not everyone in the clubwas for the project and theyall had their own reasons butchief amongst them was‘were the goal posts going tobe changed again’? We wrotea cheque for $40,000 andhanded it over.

“To this date all we have toshow for that money is a re-ceipt. There has been no pub-lic acknowledgement and tomy knowledge no recognitionof Rotary at the GP Clinicsince it was expanded. I hopein the near future that this

situation will be rectified andour Rotary Club will be ac-knowledged by way of aplaque in the waiting roomand an invitation to an offi-cial opening of the expandedGuyra GP Clinic.

“To the members of theGuyra Club and the commu-nity of Guyra I thank you foryour support and trust in ourClub to raise money and Ithank Hunter New EnglandHealth for expanding theClinic so our community hasaccess to world class medicalservices.

Over the last 12 months theRotary Club contributed over$47,000.00 to the GuyraCommunity:

Hunter New EnglandHealth donation to GP Clinic$40,000, VRA $1,000, TheHub at Guyra $600, SES$500.00, Men’s Shed $200,Rotarians Against Malaria$300, Rotary Foundation$1,000, Brazier Family FiveCent Friday $200, WestpacRescue Helicopter $200,School end of year book prizes$500, RYAG Dairy re youthattendance $100, DistrictGovernor’s partner’s project$300, Reimbursement todonors re Helipad fund rais-ing $1,800.

PHJ and The Ref are still tussling it out at the top of the LocalsLeaderboard with PHJ maintaining a lead of two points.

Men’s Shed saw their way through the sawdust and made a re-covery to join Mailman in second place, followed by John andYoung Darcey in equal third place. Eel-be-Right is still in third lastplace! Some special training might be in order.

It appears that the race is on for second place in the Celebrities -barring any mishap, Tegan is now way out in front on 180 points.Josh is in second place on 152, followed closely in the middle of thefield by Sue on 146.

There are some murmurings in the pack, however, and there maybe a call for some swabbing to take place!
