Chair MessageYour Chamber - Adding Value to Small Business

Membership in the Tri-City Regional Chamber has numerous benefits for all members, but there are several targeted specifically to small businesses.

Your Chamber appreciates all of our member businesses and in particular the larger businesses that have allowed us to fund many of the programs mentioned above including WRPS, Battelle and GESA. But we know, just like our larger members, that robust business climate is one driven by the success of small business who are responsible for creating a majority of new job growth. These programs are highly beneficial but we will not rest on our laurels – the new strategic plan in the final stages of development will chart a course to further expand on the value proposition we can offer our members. For instance, we plan to increase our connection to and programming for next-generation members, contemporize our communications, update our tiered dues pricing approach and be a unifying voice on economic and political issues.Stay tuned as your Chamber works to serve you, our members, even better than before!

Martin Conger Board Chair

The Chamber’s Good Health is Good Business program, the focus of the April Luncheon meeting, is a wellness program targeted to small businesses that do not have programs of their own. Our members are capitalizing on this benefit with 64 company teams joining, plus another 124 individual members participating, for a total of 415 people enrolled in the spring program. The Small Business Incentive Program (SBIP) started in 2011, thanks to the generous support of Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS). This program strengthens local small businesses by awarding grants up to $2000. to purchase key products or services. This year, the Regional Chamber and WRPS have again partnered to offer the SBIP and award $30,000 in grants to small businesses across the Tri-Cities. To date, 214 awards have been made to small businesses! The newest program is Economic Gardening with the Chamber being the first in the Northwest to offer this innovative approach to helping existing small business grow to achieve their full potential. The pilot program, sponsored by Battelle and GESA Credit Union, funded five business to go through the program that includes 36 hours of research services by experts that know how to help businesses grow. Taking notice of the Chamber’s success, the State of Washington has followed our lead with a budget of $150,000 for Washington small businesses. Governor Inslee visited the Tri-Cities on May 3rd to meet with the five small businesses that went through the Chamber program to hear firsthand the benefits and thank the Chamber for our leadership in establishing the program and helping the state get on board. The Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) sited at the Regional Chamber helps businesses in our region’s six counties understand and capitalize on business opportunities with government agencies. Doing business with the government can be intimidating for a small business and PTAC helps them understand and navigate the process. Since 2010, our PTAC Counselor has helped businesses win over $176 million in government contracts.

Governor Inslee Holds Economic Gardening

Roundtable Discussion with TCRCC

On May 3, Governor Jay Inslee visited the Tri-Cities and held a roundtable discussion with the Tri-City Regional Chamber at elevate in Richland to learn more about the Tri-Cities Economic Gardening Pilot Program. The program was launched by the Regional Chamber in 2015, with the support of Battelle, operator of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Gesa Credit Union. It was the first program of its kind in the Pacific Northwest and five second-stage companies from the Tri-Cities were selected to participate in the pilot program. This year, the Washington State Department of Commerce launched a statewide Economic Gardening Pilot Program modeled off of the Tri-Cities.

Governor Inslee met with Regional Chamber staff; representatives from Battelle and Gesa Credit Union; and leaders from all five participating companies. The Tri-Cities program is already seeing solid results, helping these businesses create jobs and grow in the community. Governor Inslee was impressed with its early success and told local media, “Tri-Cities has been innovative in so many ways in technology, now it's innovative in policy. We are going to grow jobs and small businesses."

Advocating for Economic GrowthCompanies participating in the Tri-Cities Economic Gardening Pilot Program are:

• Carbitex

• elevate

• Paragon Corporate Housing

• Pay Plus Benefits, Inc.

• Plastic Injection Molding, Inc.

The Tri-Cities Economic Gardening Pilot Program will finish this summer, with another round of Economic Gardening for Tri-Cities companies planned very soon.

The Tri-City Regional Chamber is pleased to announce Friends of Badger Mountain (FOBM) as the April Outstanding Member of the Month. FOBM is an all-volunteer organization and was founded in 2003 by a group of area residents dedicated to preserving and maintaining the ridges and other natural habitat in the Mid-Columbia region for the benefit of the general public and our environment. Over 200,000 people use the Badger Mountain trail annually making it one of Washington’s most-hiked peaks. Through private donations and a grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office; FOBM raised $1.5 million dollars earlier this year to be able to purchase nearly 200 acres on Candy Mountain to expand the community trail system expected to open this fall. FOBM has been a partner with the Regional Chamber for the Good Health is Good Business Program and a member since 2013.

Thank you Friends of Badger Mountain for your time and efforts to improve the quality of life in our community by expanding our outdoor recreation opportunities. We are proud to recognize you as the April Outstanding Member of the Month.
