GREG MATE COMMITMENT TO MATHEMATICS AWARD

The “Greg Mate Commitment to Mathematics Award” is awarded to a student in Year 12 who possesses a passion for Mathematics along with a desire and dedication to improve. These were traits that Mr Mate valued most in Mathematics education during his time at Willyama High School. Mr Mate taught at Willyama for almost 10 years, and was extremely passionate about education in Broken Hill. He appreciated and acknowledged the beauty in Mathematics, and always tried to convey this to his students. He always went above and beyond for his students and is sorely missed at Willyama High School. This award has been in place since 2013 when Mr Mate unfortunately passed away due to a short illness. Greg’s family hope that his legacy lives on in Broken Hill and are proud to sponsor this annual award in his name. This year’s winner is:

Hanan Aljarmakani (12)

Hanan has shown a significant interest in Mathematics and how it applies to the world around her. She has been a dedicated Advanced and Extension 1 Mathematics student who always questions how things work and where it applies to her life. Her passion for learning has seen her achieve pleasing results in her Mathematics courses and it is for this reason that Hanan is a worthy recipient of the Greg Mate Commitment to Mathematics Award.
