In the other match of the day, Dabang Delhi also delivered a hammer-blow to Jaipur Pink Panthers’ playoff chances by condemning them to a 35-34 defeat in front of their home fans. TAMIL THALAIVAS VS U MUMBA Ajay Thakur was once again the star of the night finishing with 15 raid points and one im- portant tackle point. The teams exchanged points early on but Thakur and Prapanjan got the better of Mumbai’s defence and took a 4-1 lead. U Mumba turned it around from there to inflict an All-Out on Tamil Thalaivas through some smart defending. By the end of the first half, U Mumba led 18-15. Thalaivas consolidated in the sec- ond half and Thakur put up a fight to bring U Mumba down to 3 men. Relentless raiding by him helped the Thalaivas to finally inflict an All-Out on U Mumba in the 16th minute. In the closing minutes Thakur proved once again why he is considered one of the best in the league as he won the game for his side with a two-point raid. Kadian tried to get his team back in his last raid but Thakur got the better of him and took his side to a 38-35 victory. DABANG DELHI VS JAIPUR PINK PANTHERS The game burst into life in the fourth minute when a brilliant four-point su- per raid by Nitin Rawal gave Jaipur a 5-2 lead. However, two super tackles by Delhi on Rawal first and then Pawan Kumar squared things up at 10-10 in the 15th minute. Heading into the half time break, Delhi had a slender 14-13 lead. It was neck and neck in the sec- ond half and the core was 21-21 by the 27th minute. Delhi though eventually effecting an All-Out on Jaipur in the 37th minute for a 32- 31 lead. A self-out by Jaipur once again squared the score and set up a grandstand finish, allowing Delhi to then pull off a successful tackle on Kumar in the buzzer raid of the contest to clinch victory. TAMIL THALAIVAS END SIX-MATCH LOSING STREAK Delhi topples Jaipur at last minute NAOMI N Chennai, Oct 11: Even though the State govern- ment boasts of providing toilets in all schools, around 40 per cent of the toilets in schools in Tamilnadu are completely unusable and ill- maintained, but the problem is far worse than what one can imagine. On International Day of the Girl Child being celebrated today (11 October), almost every single girl student in Tamilnadu struggles to get access to clean toilet conditions. Director of ChangeIndia, A Naray- anan, said, ‘While the current BJP government is in the process of improving sanitation through Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the previous gov- ernments, UPA 1 and 2, had Total Sanitation campaign. So, in 15 years there is a constant attempt but noth- ing materialised from that. Toilets is school has never been a priority. If we check schools, we find that the teachers toilets are well-maintained, but they are under lock and key.’ V Kavitha, a secondary grade teach- er in the Panchayat Union Middle School in Mamandur, Kanchipuram, had to intervene for a proper toilet on the school campus. ‘The girls suffer more when they get their periods. They take leave from school on these days. On regular days, they drink less water in the morning and skip breakfast or lunch, because if they have to use the toilet, they can’t. They face urinary tract in- fection (UTI) and digestion problem. The lack of roof or a disposal bin, lack of water are even now a hurdle for them to attend school, and their right to personal hygiene.’ The current situation is a lot better than in 2002. ‘The Sarva Siksha Abiyan (SSA) allotted funds for toilets. But before that? ‘I suffered from a kidney stone because of lack of toilets after I began teaching in the school,’ says Kavitha. Cut to 2002, ‘We took the children to a mountainous region near the school for toilet breaks. First the girls went, then the boys. We had to make sure they never went alone because the area had rowdy elements. Girls made sure they had ‘company of three’ to go, until then they held the urge,’ explains Kavitha. Cut to now. ‘It hasn’t improved much. The SSA built a single toilet for boys and girls, without a partition. The girls go first and then the girls make a beeline. If at all there is a toilet building, there is no water, if water is available there are no taps. Absence of a tank, a bucket, a mug or even a roof all come in the way. Sometimes, the children themselves will have to fetch water to use the toilet, in a break of 20 minutes, not all can use the toilet because there are many of them with just a few urinals,’ elaborates Kavitha. The problem, Kavitha says, is persistent in high school, higher secondary and welfare schools. The elementary and middle schools have people allotted for it and get a regularly supply of cleaning agents. Adyar-based activist Shanthi said the problem of clean toilets for girls is the same in private schools which charge exorbitant fees, ‘I know girls who don’t use the toilet at all and hesitate to eat food because they do not want to use the school toilet. The school does not even provide a changing room to change into sports jersey and they have to use the unclean toilets for it. It makes them uncomfortable.’ Proper toilets in schools faraway dream for girls Many suffer health issues Pvt campuses just as bad as govt institutions International Day of Girl Child celebrated today TOILETS LOST MIDWAY In May, the Edu- cation Department had began a drive to construct and renovate toilets in schools. They ap- proached corporates, industries and roped in non-governmental organisations for the project. Many industrialists in Tondiarpet and Ambattur had agreed to sponsor 500 toilets, re- ports said. Minister Sengottaiyan and Minister for Rural Industries P Benjamin met industry owners of Tondiarpet, Ambattur and Madura- voyal and asked them to sponsor toilets, and the industrialists agreed to build toilets and also provide in- frastructure. But till now, the project has not taken off. Bike-borne thieves knock down woman NT Bureau Chennai, Oct 11: Two bike-borne thieves knocked down a middle-aged woman, also on a motorcycle, and robbed her of 12-and-a-half sovereigns near Gemini flyover last night. The police said the victim, Latha (44) was tak- ing back her daughter from a tuition centre at West Mambalam. The bike-borne duo followed Latha from GN Chetty Road signal and knocked her down near Gemini flyover. NT Bureau Chennai, Oct 11: Police is on the lookout for the popu- lar actor Santhanam for the second consecutive day in connection with the assault of a BJP advocate here. A special team headed under the inspector Albin Raj has been formed and conducted a search at his residence in Teynam- pet. It is said that similar searches will be conduct- ed at the other properties owned by the actor in and around the city. It is re- ported that the actor has filed an anticipatory bail in the Madras High Court on Tuesday. The actor and a city-based builder exchanged blows after the latter failed to return the actor’s money, which he gave to construct a shopping complex in Kundrathur. This incident occurred at the advocate office at Chowdhary Nagar in Virugambakkam. Actor had got into a deal with the builder Shan- mugasundaram. Apparently, the project never took off. In connection with this, the actor and his manager Ramesh visited the advocate’s office as the builder was dodging the mon- ey. Soon the verbal duel between Santhanam and the advocate escalated and turned into a fistfight. Both sustained injuries and were admit- ted at a private hospital and later discharged. BJP cadres protested in front of Valasaravakkam police station demanding action against the actor. A case has been registered against the actor and booked in three sections 324 IPC (voluntarily causes hurt), 294 B (Recites or utters any obscene words or songs in public place) and 506(1) IPC (punishment for criminal intimidation). Cops continue search for actor Santhanam NT Bureau Chennai, Oct 11: The police are on the lookout for the culprit who attacked Poonamallee MLA Elumalai last night while he was returning from a funeral near Vellavedu. They said the MLA was returning in his car after attending a funeral at a party functionary’s house. While he was nearing Uttuko- ttai village at Vellavedu in Tiruvallur district, an unknown person stopped the car and smashed the windscreen with a log. He also attacked the MLA and injured his lips. When the nearby villagers saw the incident, they raised a cry and the attacker fled the spot. Following this, Elumalai was rushed to Tiruvallur government hospital. The Vellavedu police have registered a case and are on the lookout for the attacker. Masked men hack history-sheeter NT Bureau Chennai, Oct 11: Four masked men assaulted a history-sheeter near his residence at Red Hills last night. Police said that the victim, Salman, 24, resides at Jothi Nagar in Sergundrum. The men on motorcycles attacked Salman with sickles, leaving him seriously injured in head and hands. The rowdy was involved in murder of Ajay Anand who was killed at a petrol bunk in 2015. The victim is under- going treatment at Stanley Medical College and Health Hospital. A case has been registered with Red Hills police station. MLA attack: Cops lookout for culprit 6) Thalaivas consolidated in the second half and Thakur put up a fight to bring U Mumba down to 3 men. Relentless raiding by him helped the Thalaivas to finally inflict an All-Out on U Mumba in the 16th minute

If we check schools, we fi nd that the teachers toilets are well-maintained, but they are under lock and key.’V Kavitha, a secondary grade teach-

er in the Panchayat Union Middle School in Mamandur, Kanchipuram, had to intervene for a proper toilet on the school campus.‘The girls suffer more when they get

their periods. They take leave from school on these days. On regular days, they drink less water in the morning and skip breakfast or lunch, because if they have to use the toilet,

they can’t. They face urinary tract in-fection (UTI) and digestion problem. The lack of roof or a disposal bin, lack of water are even now a hurdle for them to attend school, and their right to personal hygiene.’The current situation is a lot better

than in 2002. ‘The Sarva Siksha Abiyan (SSA) allotted funds for toilets. But before that? ‘I suffered from a kidney stone because of lack of toilets after I began teaching in the school,’ says Kavitha.Cut to 2002, ‘We took the children

to a mountainous region near the school for toilet breaks.

The girls go fi rst and then the girls make a beeline. The problem, Kavitha says, is

persistent in high school, higher secondary and welfare schools. The elementary and middle schools have people allotted for it and get a regularly supply of cleaning agents. Adyar-based activist Shanthi said

the problem of clean toilets for girls is the same in private schools which charge exorbitant fees, ‘I know girls who don’t use the toilet at all and hesitate to eat food because they do not want to use the school toilet. The school does not even provide a changing room to change into sports jersey and they have to use the unclean toilets for it. It makes them uncomfortable.’
