Fresh out of high school, uncertain what I wanted to do, but always wanting to make others happy and bring a smile to their faces, I loved the idea of being ‘Eliza Doolittle’ from My Fair Lady who worked with flowers. So, I went into training, opened a florist and continued from there.
Everything inspires me, there are so many elements we are surrounded by, it is hard not to be inspired by them. I love all kinds of design, it’s hard to choose a particular design when everything is so lovely!
My days are filled with appointments with future brides, wholesalers for weddings, as well as having two children to give me grey hairs!
In 2015, Arabella’s Creations aims to deliver more lovely creations for weddings. Our brand will also be part of collaborative photo shoots with many WA talents.

After travelling throughout most of my 20’s with a camera, in late 2006 I returned to Perth with a suitcase of negatives, a new kit of digital gear (after a timely visit to Japan) and desire to set up my own business. A good friend is a celebrant and after seeing some of my work, encouraged me to put together a portfolio of work she could show clients. Luckily I had also photographed a couple of weddings to put in the portfolio.
A lovely couple that I met with in late 2006 who wanted something a little different for their wedding images, that fell in love with some people shots I photographed in Africa and trusted me to capture their day. They referred me on to friends and by the end of 2007 I had photographed 20 weddings and I was in love with photographing weddings.
I try to look outside the wedding industry for inspiration. It can be anything from a beautifully made film, a walk along the beach in sun soaked light to reading an amazing book or just listening to someone’s story.
Photography that tells a story, this is what I strive to do at every wedding. Wedding trends come and go, but the story will always be individual.

favourite scent...I love how scents can take you to places, at the
moment, the smell of frangipanis takes me to Broome, the warmth, the sun and the red earth.
future plans...I’m currently revamping the website, launching a print option for the Photo Booth, and trying to bring polaroids into my wedding day options.
Running a business is pretty all consuming but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR CREATIVE BUSINESS? For almost 10 years I was an engineer and 5 years ago my wife (to be) gave me a DSLR camera as a birthday gift. I’ve always loved being creative and drawing was a large part of my childhood and teenage years but I’d left that behind for a technical career and picking up a camera was an artistic outlet for me. It brought a lot of that love of art back. From the very beginning I had a fascination with wedding photography and was drawn to it like no other area of photography. In 2011 a family friend asked me to shoot their wedding and I shot it with all my heart. Their guests loved it and from there I managed to book a couple more. A year later I found myself jobless with a young family to take care of. With my wife’s encouragement, I decided to give my wedding photography all of my attention and I’m humbled that my business has grown to where it has today.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My ‘Why’… the reason I am a wedding photographer. In my ideal world, I believe you should marry and grow old together with your spouse. I imagine that years down the track, perhaps when things get tough and you want to throw in the towel, you’ll open your wedding album and be pulled in… I want you to relive every moment of your wedding day. The emotions, the elation and everything in between because whilst people think I’m capturing love stories (which I am), I’m really there to document the making of a promise. One I want you to keep all of your days so I’m constantly pushing myself for creative and beautiful ways to remind you of that for years to come.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? We have just acquired a studio space in Victoria Park, so we’re just putting in the finishing touches to make it a beautiful place to host our clients for the new wedding season. I started out shooting with Shona’s camera in 2008. It was something I took up on a whim to fill my free time but the more I learned the more I got interested. I was then asked to shoot a friend’s wedding in Dec 2009, and despite it being a 44 degree day, I thoroughly enjoyed myself! Another year or so later, I quit my day job and decided to focus on this full-time. I haven’t had a regret since.
I’m inspired by anything that has nice light! But to narrow it down, arthouse movies and work from the greats like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa are fascinating to look at. Other wedding photographers don’t inspire me as much, maybe because I’ve seen so much of wedding photography that’s just a copy of someone else’s work.
We’ve just returned from Cambodia shooting a project for Transform Cambodia, a private foundation that takes children off the streets and place them into schools and care centers educating and caring for them through a sponsorship program. We documented the work that Transform was doing and how it has impacted on the kids and local families there. We got the chance to meet some of these families (including our two kids!) and photographed their portraits as well as document their plight, living in a country like Cambodia. We hope to publish a book with these pictures alongside interviews from various people to raise funds for Transform Cambodia.
Our original aim still stands: to be storytellers first, photographers second. We want to make photos that are meaningful and evoke an emotion, photos that tell a story about the people in them. Because that triumphs over any well-composed, well-lit photo every time. Our couples love our work for the deep connection they have to their photos.To find out more
