There’s an old saying that “too many cooks spoil the broth.” Iguess those old sayings come from practical experience. Iremember one year when we all lived at home. Christmas was“just around the corner” as the saying goes. We had a family of8 and we were all ready to celebrate our Christmas in our ownway.
We always had a little family get together about a week beforeChristmas as we were all busy on Christmas day and Boxingday with our own families. One of the highlights was our “Christ-mas Buffet”. Everyone would bring a munchie type food and abaked item. With eight people and our mother, we had a variedsupply of dishes. Chili, chicken wings, honey garlic ribs, stuffedchicken breasts, rabbit pie andpizza were always on themenu.
We also had the punchpot down in the basementon its own table. Dadwould make his favoritefruit punch and he wouldthen “flavor” it with somefancy liquor he would buy at the liquor store. There were fiveboys in the family and three girls. The boys would also sneaksome of their own favorite brew in the pot (actually it was a hugestainless steel lobster pot) to “flavor” it as well.
The boys were all downstairs watching the hockey game andcheering on the Leafs while two of the brothers were rooting forthe Canadiens. We sent a punch bowl filled with the brew up-stairs for the girls to drink. After the second period ended andmany rounds of punch were drunk, dad got up to go to the bath-room and fell “arse over tea kettle” as he got up from the couch. All the boys thought this was hilarious and when Dougie went toget up, he too took a header. This prompted another round oflaughter.
By now, nobody was feeling any pain and the boys nearly wetthemselves when they saw Dad actually crawling up the base-ment steps to get upstairs. To put it mildly, he was “pie eyed.”The girls were in rare form as well. Mom was telling dirty jokes,a rare thing for her to do, and the girls all had tears running downtheir faces.
When the time came to go home, everybody realized that theywould need to call taxies to get home. It was like a conventionas a parade of eight taxies lined up outside our door. The nextday we all understood what had happened and solved the mys-tery. After Dad talked to the boys, they all admitted to “flavoring”the punch with a 26 ouncer each, unaware that each of the fiveboys had done this. The brew must have been pretty near 100%alcohol. No wonder everybody was bombed.
Everybody made it home safely and they still talk about the“Great Christmas Party” with a twinkle in their eyes.

The congregation of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church inSydney Mines are sure a busy group of people these days. Asthe Season of Christmas quickly approaches the St. Andrew’selves are decorating the beautiful sanctuary with bright red bows, green garland and a green Christmas tree trimmed with whiteChristmas lights and red bows. This tradition was first begun bythe St. Andrew’s Choir members and recently members of thecongregation have pitched in to help as well. The tastefullydecorated sanctuary adds so much to the Christmascelebrations and will also serve as a wintery background fortheir upcoming Christmas Concert, The Miners’ First Noel. The Miners’ First Noel concert was started a few years backwhen Bob Quinn came up with the idea that he and a few closefriends do aC h r i s t m a sconcert at St.Andrew’s toc e l e b r a t emusic andsong in thegood old town ofSydney Mines.Bob along withKevin Evans fellin love not onlywith St. Andrew’s church but the people of Sydney Mines aswell. Quinn thought St. Andrew’s would be the perfect setting toperform a Christmas concert for the community and so beganthe Miners First Noel. The song “The Miners’ First Noel” is asong which Quinn himself wrote especially for the very firstconcert and The Barra MacNeil’s have since recorded this livelytune on their Christmas album and it’s becoming very popularduring the Christmas season. “We are thrilled to have The Miners First Noel back at St.Andrew’s this year” quoted Rita Johnston, Stewardship CommitteeChairperson. This year it will be held on Friday, December 29th
at 7:00 p.m. with Kevin Evans, Bob Quinn, Cameron andMacKenzie Clarke, Jennifer Whalen, Stewart MacNeil and LucyMacNeil and Lucy’s two daughters. “Also for the first time, weare going to get a sneak preview of the next generation of theMacNeil Family when we see Kenna and Ameila (Lucy’sdaughters) perform with their mom” Johnston added. This will beone show you won’t want to miss. “This is a concert for the whole family, young and old and whata great Christmas gift this would make for that someone whoenjoys music and song”. Johnston added that she is gettingphone calls from people out of town wanting to reserve ticketsfor Christmas Gifts for loved ones. “People think it’s a wonderfulidea and a great community event where people come togetherto celebrate the Christmas season”. Tickets are on sale nowbut going quickly, so pick yours up today at Sexton’s Pharmasavein Sydney Mines and Shoppers Drug Mart in North Sydney oryou can reserve them by calling 902-736-2508. Kid Rock – “Sweet SouthernSugar” - Robert James Ritchiereally grabbed our attention in1998 when he released his 4th
album, “Devil Without A Cause”,scoring major hits with the rap/rock songs “Bawitdaba” and“Cowboy”-but even on that firstalbum Kid Rock let us know thathe wasn’t just a one-trick pony;that album also gave us thefantastic southern-rockinspired ballad“Only GodKnows Why” andfor over 27 yearsKid Rock hasbeen releasinggreat songs andgreat albums-this is his latest.I first got wind ofthis collectionvia the musicvideo for the southern cultureon the skids (and proud of it)song “Po Dunk”. It’s a total ‘inyour face’ raunchy redneck rocknumber that celebrates allthings white trash. The album’s first track,“Greatest Show On Earth”, is afull-on rock and roll anthemthat’s now being used bywrestlers-and it actuallysounds like a Rob Zombie‘psychobilly’ song; we get moreof that OTT stuff with thewonderful “Grandpa’s Jam”, asong that’s pretty much 110%pure raunchy rock and roll. As mentioned earlier, KidRock never could be describedas musically one-dimensional,and to that end he continues tosurprise us; “I Wonder” is asuper-funky old school track
that morphs into a JamesBrown-like musical meltdown, and Kid’s take on the 1965 FourTops song “Sugar Pie HoneyBunch” is, well, amazing. Another great track is “StandThe Pain”, which at first hearingreminded me of something thatJohnny Reid might sing and on“Tennessee Mountain Top” Kidslows things down a bit, andwaves a Lynyrd Skynyrd flag forpatriotic rock and roll, plus thesong actually named “AmericanRock and Roll” combines Kid’slove for heartland rock and roll,
R&B and countrymusic, giving us areally great andunique number. Kid travels downanother slowerroad on “Back ToThe Otherside”,which againmixes country-rock and rap,
something that Kid Rock doesso well, and on “RainingWhiskey” Kid sings the bluesabout losing a girl-anddrowning his sorrows in a bottleof Jack, Jim or Johnny. Kid Rock is an un-apologeticredneck, as well as a hugesupporter of the Americanmilitary and their families, andthis past summer he evenexpressed an interest inrunning for the Michigan statesenate under the Republicanbanner. However, he laterdenied that he was going to run, saying this album release andtour were now his priority. KidRock doesn’t give a damn whatanyone thinks of him-but alwayssteps up to the plate for hisfans-and with this album he justhit another home run.
