A/%&. T + L-.&(*): : Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
Today, we begin the celebration of the holiest days of the year. Holy Week begins with the reading of the Gospel passage of the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem, reaches a climax on Mount Calvary and is completed by the sight of the Empty Tomb. The celebration of Mass today is a bit different from the norm that we follow most weeks. We begin with the blessing of palms and hearing the Gospel Proclamation of the remarkable way Jesus came into Jerusalem. It was the custom for pilgrims to enter the city on foot. On great kings and rulers would ride in to the city, and usually on great steeds. However, Jesus, the King of the new Jerusalem, chooses to ride into the city on a majestic stallion, but on the back of a young colt: a sign of humility and peace. There is no penitential rite once we enter the Church. The procession ends with the Collect.
At the proclamation of the Passion Gospel, the usual candles, incense, greeting by the priest or deacon and signing of the Book are all omitted. During the Gospel Reading, the people’s normal posture is to remain standing, showing reverence for Christ who is present in the Word. Here the norm should be for them to remain standing as they are able. This keeps the assembly in an active posture, not only by their stance but also by giving them a choice to do what is best for them to show reverence to the Word. It also gives permission to those who do need to sit down, for whatever reason, to do so. A general liturgical principle is to always ask for the norm while allowing exceptions for those unable to fulfill the norm.
All are most invited to participate in the special liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. These liturgies are held only once a year and point directly to the Great Event of our Redemption: the Paschal Mystery.

The need exists at all our Masses, but most acutely at the 4:30PM Sunday Mass. Both women and men are asked to sign up for this great ministry to our parish. Please contact Father Paul, or leave your information with the Parish Secretary, Maureen Waterman, in the Priory Office if you are willing to help in this way.
