FLOWERS FOR THE SANCTUARY For many of us, live plants and flowers tap our spiritual core and enrich our worship experience. The colors can be coordinated to celebrate the season of the liturgical year. For others, they beau fy the sanctuary. People donate flowers to celebrate weddings, births, and anniversaries, to honor friends and family, to memorialize those who have moved on--for any reason at all. With a beau fully renovated church, we want to establish a flower fund especially to keep coordina ng fresh flowers in front of the altar and by the bap smal font. You can designate your dona on to be used for a specific weekend and in memory of a specific person or event. Please consider dona ng! Contact Dee at [email protected]

GEORGE’S GLOVES FOR THE HOMELESS FEBRUARY & MARCH 2017 George Strohmer, life-long parishioner of St. Alphonsus, had a particular regard for the homeless on those winter days and nights when he felt the harsh coldness that numbed his hands as he worked on his Hernwood Road farm. As a farmer, you don’t choose when to work, when to stay indoors or when to take a vacation. The care, feeding, birthing of animals; the preparation or harvesting of crops; the mending of buildings and fences; maintenance of equipment all come first. You don’t choose the environment you’re exposed to because heat, cold, snow, sleet or hail don’t come on scheduled time. He knew what it was liked to be chilled to the bone, but he had ways to warm up that a homeless person couldn’t do. He could crawl into a warm pig hut where a momma pig laid peacefully delivering her babies in a bed of straw with a heat lamp securely hung above, or duck inside the barn full of harvested hay stored as feed for his cows over the winter months. In past years, we have all benefited by his generosity when we enjoyed the fresh corn on the cob at the Woodstock Festival, which he planted and grew especially to ripen in August just for St. Alphonsus. Many of us remember the hay rides he provided at the Festi-val, as well as the October hay rides and cookouts in the park with George playing guitar as we sat around the campfire at night. And there were the fresh-cut pine trees he hauled to the church for Christmas decorating. To this day his family honors his wish that we have plenty of their farm-grown pork sausage to enjoy at the pancake breakfasts with Santa each year. In his memory, we want you to share his concerns by a simple gesture:

Help ignite the fire! Or
Keep it burning!!!!
Stewardship is about helping others identify
their gifts and share them lovingly with
others. It’s not about money; it’s about a way
of life in the parish, an attitude of the mind and heart that is expressed in action; acknowledging that all is
gift from God and returning it to Him. It’s about helping parishioners use their gifts of time and talent as well as treasure. Would you love to experience the gratification of working with dedicated parishioners,
exploring the possibilities for the best use of gifts, and contributing to fulfilling the parish’s mission and
ministries? St. Alphonsus Rodriguez needs someone to chair our
stewardship efforts and tap into the very rich and varied talents of parishioners. If you enjoy working with people, directing effort and resources, and are excited to be a vital cog in the mission of the parish,
please contact Fr. Lacey.
