INT. THE SEQUENTIAL DETECTIVE AGENCY - NIGHT

Smolder and Scullery are sitting in their chairs watching TV. Alan sits on the

desk.

On the TV, a poorly animated flash cartoon of a REPORTER sits at a newsdesk.

REPORTER (V. O.)(on the TV)

...and in other news, a faketicker tape parade caused masspanic and terror throughout the cityof Portland today. Here's some of

the footage.

The TV displays a poorly animated flash cartoon of a city street. The street ison fire and pieces of paper are raining down on it. Little cartoon people arerunning up and down the street screaming. A car drives down the street andruns over most of the people. A volcano appears in the middle of the streetand it shoots lava everywhere. A helicopter crashes into the volcano. Atornado appears in the background.

SCULLERYI don't think I'll ever get use to

seeing the news presented asa flash cartoon.

SMOLDERPortland's the only city that doesit for some reason.

The TV display the poorly animated reporter again.

REPORTER (V. O.)(on the TV)

Devastating. According to the police,something called The SequentialDetective Agency was involved withthis horrible tragedy. The pieces of paper falling from the sky were actuallyads for this business in question.Luckily for them the address on theads is for the Library of Congress and



not their business's address.

The TV displays cartoon footage of the Library of Congress. The building is onfire and spaceships are attacking it.

REPORTER (V. O.)(on the TV)Well that's all the news we have fortoday. Goodnight and thanks forwatching.

Smolder turns the TV off.

SMOLDERAt least our name's out there.

SCULLERY Yeah, my dentist always saidany publicity is good publicity,but that was before he went toprison.

ALANI produced a movie abouta pair of shoes once. It was called The Red Shoe Dairies.

SCULLERYWasn't that the title of a perverted TVshow?

ALAN Yeah. We ended up changing thetitle to The Red Shoe Biographies.

SMOLDER That's a stupid title.

ALANIt sure was. We ended up shelving theproject because of the test audience'sreactions.Thankfully the shoes featuredin the movie were highly combustible. There was a massive recall and thecompany that made the shoes wentbankrupt.



SCULLERYHow is that a good thing?

ALAN

When people found out aboutour movie they demanded to see it.So we released it and it brokequite a few box office records.

SMOLDERSo the shoe's negative publicityhelped make your movie a success. That's pretty cool.

SCULLERY

How come I've never heard of this before?

ALANProbably because it all tookplace in a small european countrythat doesn't exist anymore.

The phone rings.

SCULLERY

I'll get it.

Scullery picks up the phone.

SCULLERY(into phone)

Sequential Detective Agency.

STEVE (V. O.)(over phone)

Hi, this is Steve from the comic

book store.

SMOLDER(to Alan)

I bet that's Steve.




Oh hi Steve. What's up?

ALAN(to Smolder)

I find you impressive.


Ya know that door in the backof the store.

Smolder puts Alan on his head and they CHATTER away about somethingsilly. Scullery, annoyed by them, walks around the desk to hear Steve better.


Yeah.


Something weird happened withthat door.


New weird or old weird?


New weird. I was closing upa few hours ago and as I turnedthe lights off I noticed the doorwas open. I turned--

Smolder and Alan SUDDENLY start laughing.


Just a second Steve.

Scullery covers the mouthpiece with her hand.

SCULLERY(angrily to Smolder and Alan)

Quiet down! Listening to Steve talkis bad enough. I don't need you



two distracting me from feigninginterest.

Smolder and Alan stop laughing and Smolder gets an unconvincing seriouslook on his face.

SCULLERY(into phone)Sorry Steve. You were saying?

Smolder and Alan start laughing again. Scullery plugs her free ear with oneof her fingers.


Ah yeah, I... ah, oh right. I turned thelight back on and the door was closed

again. I went over to investigate and Ifound something really bizarre sitting infront of the door.

(pauses)It was a box of newspapers.


How's that bizarre? There werea bunch of those when we werethere last time.

Smolder holds Alan up with his right hand and begins pontificating. Scullerypicks up the phone and carries it over to the end of the couch that's closestto the window.


The newspapers inside the boxwere different.

SCULLERY

(into phone)Different how?

Smolder holds Alan over his shoulder like a waiter holds a tray.


It was the headline on the newspapers.



Smolder hurls Alan at the wall. Alan hits the wall and falls to the floor.


What was the headline?

The part of the neon sign in the window flickers on casting Scullery in a redglow.


"The RMS Titanic Sinks".

Smolder, looking worried, picks up Alan and cradles him in his arms.


But the Titanic didn't sink.

(pauses)

What was the date on it?

STEVE (V. O.)

(over phone)April 14, 1912.

The rest of the neon sign flickers on casting Scullery in an even darker redglow.


That's the same day the Titanic

disappeared.


Yeah... it kinda spooked me

out.(pauses)

Can I come hang out with y--

Scullery hangs up the phone and Smolder walks over to her with Alan cradled in his

arms.



SMOLDERI think I killed Alan.

ALANI'm not dead but I could use

some tape.

Scullery stares off into space.

SMOLDERWhat’s wrong?

Smolder puts his hand on Scullery’s shoulder.

SMOLDERScullery?

Smolder shakes Scullery’s shoulder a little.

SCULLERYHuh?

SMOLDERWhat’s wrong?

Smolder sits down on the couch next to Scullery.

SCULLERYSomething really strange happenedat the comic book store.

SMOLDERLet me guess. Aliens attacked itlike they attacked the Library of Congress.

SCULLERYNo. Something weirder.

SMOLDERWhat did Steve say?

SCULLERYSteve said--

FIVE MINUTES LATER



Scullery and Smolder are sitting at the desk while Alan sits on top of it. Alanhas some duct tape on his corners.

SCULLERY--and then I hung up on him.

SMOLDERInteresting. So the fire destroyedall the artifacts except for the Jade Monkey.

SCULLERYWhat are you talking about?

SMOLDERWhat are you talking about?

SCULLERYI was telling you about whatSteve told me.

SMOLDERSteve the horse?

SCULLERYWho’s Steve the horse?

SMOLDER That’s exactly what I’d liked toknow.

ALANI didn’t know horses could talk!

SMOLDER(to Alan)

Stay outta this Alan. This is betweenme and the horse.

ALAN(to Smolder)

Which horse?

Scullery slams her fist on the desk grabbing Smolder and Alan’s attention.

SCULLERY



(calmly) That’s enough.

Scullery opens up one of the desk drawers. Inside the drawer is a taperecorder which currently recording. Scullery presses the stop between, then

she presses the rewind button, and after rewinding it little she presses play.FIVE MINUTES LATER

SCULLERY (V. O.)(from the tape recorder)

--and then I hung up on him.

Scullery stops the recording and closes the drawer.

SMOLDEROoohh... that’s pretty weird.

SCULLERYWhat’d’ya think it means?

ALANPara--

SMOLDERParallel universe!

ALAN

--llel universe.

SMOLDER(to Alan)

I win!

SCULLERYSo there’s another universe outthere where the Titanic sank?

SMOLDER

Hmm... that universe’s version of that James Cameron movie probablyended differently.

ALAN(angrily)

And it probably didn’t have a bunch of pseudo science fiction bull crap in it!



Scullery and Smolder both look over at Alan.

ALAN(quietly)

What? I thought it was stupid movie.

SCULLERYAnyways, someone from the otherside of that door wanted us to knowabout this.

A car EXPLODES outside.

SCULLERYWhat the hell?

Smolder jumps up and rushes to the window. Scullery picks up Alan andfollows Smolder.

SMOLDERAh Scullery, somebody blew up yourcar.

Scullery looks through the window.

SCULLERY

(confused)But I don’t have a car.

ALAN(happily)

Then somebody blew up the neighbors’car.
