You have been “hired” by Basics, a new tea company looking to create a brand identity and awareness of their product. To do this you must research current trends in package design, especially those concerned with the tea market. Once your research is completed you will have the opportunity to develop a logo and packaging design for their newest line of teas. In addition you will be asked to write an artist statement that sells the concept, design, and ultimately the company on your creation. Welcome to the world of professional design…remember a strong concept creates a strong product.

The Webquest will begin with students pairing up with a design partner, remember to pair up with someone that you work well with since this is a group project. After pairing up it is time to begin the procedures and sights are listed below. So have fun and remember you are professional designers and your work will be judged as such, concept and execution are critical.

Logo and packaging design for Basics Tea:1. Research current trends in design, particularly packaging and tea design. Visit the following sights and any additional sights to gain a foundation for the market

Design/Composition

Student applies design principles (such as unity, contrast, balance, movement, direction, emphasis, and center of interest) with great skill.

Student applies design principles (such as unity, contrast, balance, movement, direction, emphasis, and center of interest) with fair skill.

Student tries to apply design principles (such as unity, contrast, balance, movement, direction, emphasis, and center of interest) but the overall result is not pleasing.

The student does not appear to be able to apply most design principles to his/her own work.

Color Choices Choice and application of color shows an advanced knowledge of color relationships. Color choice enhances the idea being expressed.

Choice and application of color shows knowledge of color relationships. Colors are appropriate for the idea being expressed.

Choice and application of color shows knowledge of color relationships. Colors are, however, NOT appropriate for the idea being expressed.

Student needs to work on learning color relationships and using that knowledge in his/her work.

Planning and Explanation

Student can describe in detail at any point during the design process how s/he envisions the final product and how they intend to reach their goal. Very focused and goal-oriented.

Student can somewhat describe how s/he envisions the final product and can describe some of the steps s/he will use to reach the goal. Focused with some planning.

Student can describe how s/he envisions the final product but finds it difficult to describe how s/he will reach that goal. Has set a goal, but let's things evolve in somewhat random manner.

Student has thought very little about the project. Is present but is not invested in the product.

Sources of Inspiration

The student used 5 or more sources of inspiration and cited them correctly.

The student used 4 or more sources of inspiration and cited them correctly.

The student used 3 or more sources of inspiration and cited them correctly.

The student used less than 3 sources of inspiration AND/OR and did not cite them correctly.

Creativity of packaging design

Student has taken the technique being studied and applied it in a way that is totally his/her own. The student's personality/voice comes through. The packagin design is unique and solves the problem in a new way.

Student has taken the technique being studied and has used source material as a starting place. The student's personality comes through in parts of the design.

Student has copied some design elements from the source material. There is little evidence of creativity, but the student has done the assignment.

Student has not made much attempt to meet the requirements of the assignment.

Having completed the Webquest you should have a more thorough understanding of the design process, from research, to brainstorming, and ultimately a final product. The problems and steps that you addressed in this project are similar to those a working designer would encounter. To further your knowledge of package design you might look at the following:

- Package Design Magazine- Jab Eye Graphic Design- Jenn David Design

The lesson was developed as a part of my Technology Integration class at Colorado State University. We were asked to develop Webquest projects for our concentration areas, and coming from a design background I thought this would be a good way to introduce high school students to graphic design. This is a way to promote the arts in the secondary classroom and a way to show students a career path in art.

You have been “hiring” students to create packaging and logo designs for Basics, a new tea company looking to create a brand identity and awareness of their product. In addition students will have the opportunity to develop a logo and packaging design for “Basics” newest line of teas. In addition to the packaging and logo designs students will be asked to write an artist statement that sells the concept, design, and ultimately the company on their creation. This is a well to introduce students to the design world. .

This lesson is designed with the secondary design students in mind. This is a great way to introduce students to graphic design, mass media, and visual communication. The target for this lesson is upper division art students, but it can definitely integrate into other areas of study. One of the components to the assignment is to do some technical writing, and create a sales pitch for a client. This is an area that could definitely overlap with the English department.

The students are going to need a solid foundation in design. There is a strong emphasis on design and the elements of design in this project. One of the requirements is to develop a black and white logo. For this to be successful students are going to need a strong foundation with the elements of design and their application to graphic design.

•Standard 3: Application/Creation- Students know and apply visual arts materials, techniques, and processes.

- Refine skills to create an original artwork using a variety of techniques, tools and media.

•Standard 5: Aesthetics /Art Criticism- Students describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate works of art.

-Apply the four steps of art criticism 1)describe, 2) analyze the work in terms of elements and design principles, 3) interpret the work in terms of ideas and emotions, 4) judge the work as to it’s success both technically and in either communicating an idea, an emotion, or fulfilling a practical purpose.

Teacher PageThe lesson is going to span several days. The webquest is going to be self-guided and

probably take no more than one class period. After that production will begin. Production will span several class periods and remain somewhat flexible, as most art projects do. The anticipated completion is going to be three weeks. This includes the webquest, research, brainstorming/sketchbooks, and production of logos and packaging. After the production component is completed the students will be asked to incorporate that reflective, writing component. The students will be working in pairs. Each student should have a sketchbook to submit as well as the writing component. The only part of the project where one assignment can be turned in is the actual production piece (logos and packaging). The student will be allowed to choose their own groups and will be working in pairs.

The webquest is pretty self explanatory and there shouldn’t be too many questions. The only potential hang up that I may occur, is that student need to take their designs and actually apply them to their packaging. That is one of the biggest objectives is to create a design that can work on a three dimensional piece. This isn’t clearly stated in the webquest but it is the expectation.

The lesson shouldn’t really require any specific skills and the webquest is pretty clear. The only real requirement for the teacher is to have a strong design background. The teacher also needs to be able to push their students to write. The writing is a big component of the project and is one of the most important pieces to selling a design. The teacher needs to understand this and be able to push the students to write and take it serious.

VariationsThis assignment could really be adapted to any form of design. This would be a great way to

introduce web design, logo design, or any type of commercial art.

The lesson shouldn’t require much facilitation. For the most part the pages are solely visual with very little reading. The only prompting that will be necessary is to have students take notes in their sketchbooks on current trends and to develop sketches and writing from each site that may aide in creating their design.

Packaging design is folding functionality out of a flat pattern

This lesson is meant to introduce students to the world of design. For high school student the impending question of, “what are you going to do with your life,” is always looming. This is one way to introduce artistically gifted student to a form of art that they may turn into a career. For those that aren’t looking to pursue art this is a way to continue the development of their art skills and vocabulary. This is also a way to introduce students to the idea of using art as a form of visual communication.
