WHY FOCUS ON PRODUCTS?
EU-25 study, The environmental impact ofproducts (EIPRO) - four product groupings account for70-80% of all environmental impacts and 60% ofconsumer expenditure:
food and drink (20-30% of impacts)
housing, including buildings, construction and appliances
(20-35% of impacts)
passenger transport (15-35% of impacts)
clothing (5-10% of impacts)

Sustainable consumption and production
Inspired by: 1987 Brundtland Commission of UN:
1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit and the 2002 World Summit onSustainable Development (WSSD)
EU action plan set in 2008 Focus on environmental impact of industrial activity, product
manufacturing and consumption patterns
Develop umbrella policies
Strengthen existing policy
Focus on Ecodesign

CONCEPT OF ECODESIGN
WHAT IS ECODESIGN? Preventive approach based on Life Cycle Thinking
Minimize the environmental impact of products in thedesign stage
WHY ECODESIGN? Increasing policy and standards on products
E.g. Ecodesign directive 2005/32/EC
YOUR BENEFITS? Enhance product quality
Enhance environmental protection
Increase efficiency and cut cost
Enhance brand reputation
Grow and access new markets

LIFE CYCLE THINKING
Life cycle assessment is a tool for ecodesign
Know the impacts of production of your products and findopportunities for improvement
Taking into account all of the impacts:
Environmental (air, water, soil, resources)
Materials Production Transport Use End of Life
Global Warming
Air acidification
Eutrophication
Abiotic depletion
Land use

2005/32/EC - A framework for the setting of Ecodesign requirements forEnergy-using Products (EuP)
Amended directive (Nov 2009) widens scope from energy-using to energy-
related
Energy-using product or EuPdependent on energy input to workas intended
Energy-related product or ErPproducts that have an impact onenergy consumption during use.
ECODESIGN DIRECTIVE
Implementing Measures for each product category are set e.g. TV, lighting..
Some regulations cover a range of product category e.g. Standby and Offmode

GREENER PACKAGING
WHAT IS GREEN / ECO-FRIENDLY PACKAGING?
Reusable packaging and recyclable packaging
Biodegradable & compostable packaging: (EN 13432)
Packaging with environmentally preferable materials
WHY GREEN PACKAGING? Packaging essential requirements; Directive 2005/20/EC
and Directive 2004/12/EC
Minimise amount of waste packaging generated at source
Ensure that packaging can be reused, recovered or recycled.
Driver in todays packaging marketplace competition.

GREEN PURCHASING
WHAT IS GREEN PURCHASING? Solution for the purchase of environmentally friendly
products and services based on green criteria and
labels, the selection of contractors and the setting ofenvironmental requirements in a contract.
WHY IMPLEMENT IT? Influence the evolution of production modes
Develop a market of model green products
PORTUGUESE CONTEXT? AGENCIA PORTUGUESA DO AMBIENTE working
group to develop strategy to encourage public bodiesto adopt a green purchasing
The Strategy sets out the priority products andservices to start a green purchasing policy.

ECOLABELLING
Rotulagem Ambiental
Market instrument to stimulate supply and demand for productswith reduced environmental impact
Allows the manufacturer or seller to communicate theenvironmental performance of the product
Guides buyer in purchasing decisions
E.g. Label REMADE Promotes recycling
Applied to any product for everyday use
Assigned to products having in their composition, at least 50%recycled content

ECO EUROPEAN UNION (EUSR)
The system for awarding the EU Eco-label is to:
Promote products with reduced environmental impactduring their entire life cycle (Type I Ecolabel -independently tested endorsements of a product based onspecific criteria)
Steer consumers to these products by providing
simple, accurate, and scientific information based onthe environmental characteristics of the products
Guiding Regulation (EC) No 1980/2000 of 17 July
Testing services are provided by SGS labs to checkconformity with the regulations, e.g. cleaning products, paper products

PRODUCT CARBON FOOTPRINT REGULATION
Case study in France La Grenelle for Environment
WHAT IS GRENELLE FOR ENVIRONMENT?
Law 1 published in 2009: Consumers must be given environmentalinformation giving global characteristics of both product and packaging.France will support the recognition of these request at the level ofEuropean Union
Grenelle 2: From July 1st 2011, consumer must be informed bylabelling of Environmental Indicators (CO2e and other indicators) ofproducts during their life cycle.
CO2 emission will be mandatory for all products, and otherenvironmental impacts will be added (multi-criteria).

Carbon footprint is the total set of greenhouse gas emissions caused directly andindirectly by an [individual, event, organisation, product](Carbon Trust)
FOCUS: CARBON FOOTPRINT
Greenhouse gases Carbon dioxide
Methane
HFCs
PFCs etc.
Measure & verify carbon footprint to differentstandards: PAS 2050, WRI Life Cycle standard, ISO14067 (2011)
Once carbon footprint is known, companies candevelop a reduction strategy
Technological developments
Better process and product management
Changed Green Public or Private Procurement (GPP)

FOCUS: LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT
Life Cycle Analysis is a technique to assess the potential environmental impactsassociated with a product (or service) throughout its life cycle (ISO 14040)
Measured indicators e.g.
Green house effect
Environmental toxicity
Eutrophication
Land use
Resources, including water use
Compares environmental impactsgenerated by different technologies
Useful when
Development of internal procedures/indicators
Retailers implement green brand policies
