HIGHER DRAMA
IntroductionWelcome to the world of devising!
Devising is a skill that all theatre professionals must learn. In order to create new work, some companies rely on the devising process rather than performing published plays. Companies such as Frantic Assembly, Visible Fictions and DV8 make devising their core work.
In this unit, you will learn how to respond to range of stimuli to explore form, genre, structure & style in order to create an original piece of theatre.
How to use this bookletThis booklet is designed to provide you with a range of tasks that will led to the completion of your folio. You should complete all tasks in the order that they appear in the booklet. You may write or word-process your answers.
If you would prefer to present your folio in a different format, you are free to do so, but you must ensure that your evidence contains the same information that your answers to the tasks in the booklet would contain.
Additional video, photographic and audio evidence is not essential to pass the unit, however, it is very much encouraged to allow you to demonstrate your ability to follow the devising process.
If you need any help at all with any tasks, please speak to or email your class teacher.
Now, let’s get started…

TASK 1 – RESPONDING TO STIMULI Look carefully at the three stimuli below. In the boxes provided, please make notes of initial ideas for dramas that you could create using these stimuli.
Stimulus 1: “Kiss With A Fist” music & lyrics.
Stimulus 2: “Men Should Weep” images.

HIGHER DRAMA TASK 2 – RESEARCHING YOUR IDEAS Once you have a range of basic ideas, you should undertake further research to help you develop them into complex ideas. Some suggestions for your research could be:
Further research into a theme or issue that you want to explore further Further research into Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare Research into people who have benefitted from “The American Dream”
Use the sheets on the following pages to log your research. Be sure to include details of where you sourced your research from.
What research did you do?(You should include details of what specific information you looked into, where you found your research and why you were researching it)
![Page 5: Web viewYou may write or word-process ... RADIO PLAY. VERBATIM ... You should read the “Character Development” booklet on the National Drama Wikispace to find](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022030402/5a78e6a87f8b9a68148c2b8f/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
HIGHER DRAMAHow did your research help to develop your ideas for Dramas that could be created?
(You must use vocabulary from the lexicon in your answers)
![Page 6: Web viewYou may write or word-process ... RADIO PLAY. VERBATIM ... You should read the “Character Development” booklet on the National Drama Wikispace to find](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022030402/5a78e6a87f8b9a68148c2b8f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
HIGHER DRAMATask 3: PRESENTING YOUR COMPLEX IDEASThe next step of the process is to communicate your initial ideas for Dramas that your group could create. You have the choice of three different ways to present your ideas to your group:
OPTION 1
Create a poster that provides us with an outline of two complex ideas for Dramas that you could create from two different stimuli (one for each of the chosen stimuli). The poster must contain the following information for each idea:
A brief outline of the plot A brief overview of the characters in the Drama (Name, Age, brief description of
personality) The form of the Drama – with justification of your choice (your two ideas must have
different forms) The structure of the Drama – with justification of your choice The genre and/or style of the Drama – with justification of your choice
OPTION 2
Create a short Powerpoint presentation which could be used to communicate your complex ideas for two dramas that could be created from two different stimuli. The Powerpoint should contain slides that cover the following information:
A brief outline of the plot A brief overview of the characters in the Drama (Name, Age, brief description of
personality) The form of the Drama – with justification of your choice (your two ideas must have
different forms) The structure of the Drama – with justification of your choice The genre and/or style of the Drama – with justification of your choice
You can include a CD, USB or DVD with the powerpoint file or you can print off the powerpoint slides and include them.
OPTION 3
Complete the worksheets on the following pages
