From the President:

Greetings, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ABMA Family. Wow it is hard to believe that we are approaching Thanksgiving in a few days and Christmas is right around the corner. As you prepare for the Holidays, please take a few minutes to reflect on how fortunate we are to be alive and living in America. We have thousands of AB’s proudly serving and operating at Sea, overseas and on Shore duty around the globe. Send a card or care package to them to let them know you appreciate their sacrifice. Because of their efforts, we have the opportunity to choose how we celebrate and have the freedom to do so without any form of harassment or restrictions. Please don’t forget to say a prayer for those less fortunate and volunteer a few hours to change a life. Make-a-wish foundation, Toys for Tots, Food banks etc… are always looking for a helping hand and a charitable donation.

In 2011 our community has achieved some impressive milestones. Never before have we had so many Active Duty “AB” LDO 6310 Captains, Commanders and Lieutenant Commanders in our community. Additionally our advancements have been nothing short of amazing. There were six Master Chiefs, twenty-nine Senior Chiefs, and eighty-five new Chief Petty Officers. You are all well deserving and going to continue to do great things in our community.

For some of our other Sailors initiatives such as; Perform to serve and Continuation/Enlisted Retention Boards have transitioned some sooner than planned. Please encourage them as they start the process of Job hunting and returning to civilian life.

I applaud the efforts of all the Local Chapter Presidents. Wearing the title of President can be rewarding while at times very difficult. I encourage you to not to become discouraged by the numbers. We need each other to accomplish the task at hand and to continue to improve safety, operating procedures and the quality of life for our Sailors. So at your next meeting talk to the members you have and encourage them to “Each one Reach one”. Let’s finish 2011 stronger than we started. We are the future of the ABMA and it is our duty to carry on the traditions of our Living Legends.

LT Stroud and the Tidewater Chapter are hosting the 2013 Professional Working Group Conference/Symposium. Details are on the website and rooms are available. Look forward to your participation and your input.

V/R, LCDR Rodney H. Moss

From the office of the ABMA Vice President:

As I prepare to embark on yet another deployment and the Maiden Voyage for the USS MAKIN ISLAND (LHD-8), I want to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt greeting from Sunny San Diego...I hope that you are all well and that this note finds you in the best of health and spirits! First off, let me start by extending a hearty congratulations and a HUGE THANK YOU to Mr. Mike Yaskin, LCDR Regina Rogers, ENS Brian Lewis, the crews of NIMITZ and STENNIS and all the AB’s of the Great Northwest who put on an Excellent 2011 ABMA Working Group Conference/Symposium! Thank you for your dedication and service, you are AWESOME!!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the retirees who for many years have found a way to make each and every Symposium/Working Group Conference a success. Thank you for your support and dedication; we couldn’t do it without you! Additionally, I would also like to thank all the sponsors, vendors, coordinators and civilians for the time and effort you put into our Professional Working Group Conference...You make it easy to be an AB!

Congratulations and welcome to the new members of the Board of Directors, I look forward to working with each and every one of you and look forward to yet another productive year. We will pick up right where the last officers left off! I would also like to bid a fond farewell to the outgoing President, CAPT(Sel) Mike Singleton and Vice President, CDR(Sel) Mike Garber who did 2 tenures in office, although we know that you won’t be going far because of your commitment to this Association, it’s time to pass the torch to someone else. I know that LCDR Rodney Moss and I have big shoes to fill and hope that we will make you proud! I want to thank you both for your dedication and service to this great organization, job well done!

Before I end this note, I want to congratulate all those selected for promotion this year; this truly has been a pinnacle year for AB’s around the world. We have more CAPT’s in our community than ever before and have selected five new CDR’s, nine LCDR’s, six Master Chiefs, twenty-nine Senior Chiefs, and eighty-five new Chief Petty Officers; we truly represent what the Navy is made of! I encourage you all to carry out your new offices to the best of your knowledge and ability and look forward to hearing the sea stories you all create as you move forward into your new career and make a difference in our community.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for voting me in as your new Vice President, this truly is an honor and a privilege to serve you all in this capacity. I will carry out this office to the best of my ability and even though I am deploying for a portion of my tenure, rest assured that I will do all I can to remain engaged in this great organization! I want to encourage all to remain actively involved in your local chapters; we need all of your support! I recently turned over the Presidency of the San Diego Chapter to LCDR Frank Fuentes and I know he will do a fine job and that the San Diego AB’s are in good hands with Frank at the helm! The San Diego AB’s look forward to hosting the 2013 Professional Working Group Conference/Symposium and can’t wait to bring it back to Sunny San Diego. Until next time...God Speed and God Bless AB’s!!

From your SecretaryHello All,

Just wanted to say Seattle and Alaska was magnificent! Timmy and I went on the Alaskan Cruise. It was wonderful. We were joined by Pres and Judy Jones, and Earl and Daniela Smith. A good time was had by all.

The past few months have been hard for me. I lost my Stepfather. Actually he was like a father to me. He came into my life when I was 8 years old and I am 49 now. So if I haven’t got back to you please contact me. I have not been on top of ABMA things so let me know if you were waiting on something. You may contact me by email [email protected] or Phone 336-376-9782.

I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Sincerely, Donna

From the ABMA Chaplain:

Fellow AB’s and Shipmates,I greet you in the name of the Most High! It is awesome to have the opportunity to address you all once

again. There is not a day that goes by in which I am not thankful to be an AB and part of one of the greatest organizations in the entire world! You all are true professionals and I am honored to be considered a part of something much greater than myself!!

I am receiving prayer requests for Shipmates during their exam cycle. One key component to that is to study because you can’t remember what you don’t already know or have studied. The Bible states, “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Let’s study a little more and have faith that we will be advanced THIS TIME! SO, believe it and receive it!!!

As we defend freedom and democracy around the world, I challenge you all to continue to lift one another up in prayer and commit a special prayer for our brothers and sisters in harm’s way and currently on watch. Do the right thing and make the right decisions and you will get the right results!!!! Feed the faith and starve the doubt!!! "Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever." (Jude 1:24-25)

The Chairman for the Scholarship FundDear: Shipmates

Congratulations to this year’s awardees. Ms. Stephanie Mappin, Mr. Derek Cominskie, Ms. Heather Cianci, Ms. Jessica Huntington. We had 13 applicants to choose from and it was not an easy task. It’s that time to start thinking about having someone you know, that needs assistance to attend College/University apply for the 2012 ABMA Scholarship. I would also like to remind our past awardees and applicants you are still eligible to reapply.

The application is on our web site www.abma.usn.com. Make sure the applicant follows the instructions. I sure would hate to reject an application because someone did not follow the instructions. Please get the application to me as soon as possible. My home address is listed below.

ABMA San Diego Chapter

Greeting’s From Sunny San Diego!

First off, let me start by saying that I hope that you are all in the best of health and spirits! The San Diego Chapter is back on its feet, we are Alive and Well!! I would like to take this opportunity to give a few special “Shout-Outs” to some of our members who have taken the lead on several of our recent activities and community service projects. First one goes to ABHC Marcus Aguirre from CNATTU North Island who took the lead for a community service project called “Stand Down” which was hosted by VVSD (Veterans Village of San Diego http://www.vvsd.net/standdown.htm). We had many active duty AB’s, some members and some non-members representing the San Diego Chapter ABMA in this project…we had over 80 people there to provide free services for homeless veterans, including food, temporary shelter, basic medical care and counseling on substance abuse, veterans' benefits and legal matters.

The next special Shout-Out goes out to our very own Vice President, LCDR Frank Fuentes from ATG San Diego who put together the 1st Annual Hornblower Dinner Cruise where we had over 47 AB’s and their significant other drink, dine, and dance the night away on one of the premier Dinner Cruises of the San Diego Harbor, what an awesome time, thanks Handler Fuentes!!

And…last but not least, another Shout-Out is in order for ABHC Jose Arroyo from HSC-3 who had an enormous task of managing a recent fundraiser where AB’s from the San Diego community hosted a food booth at the Miramar Air Show. ABHCS Mueller (CNAF) and ABFCS Thomas (CNATTU North Island) initiated the Sign Up/Volunteer list and ABHC Arroyo drove it home. We would also like to extend a sincere appreciation to the USS RONALD REAGAN AB’s who made this all possible by filling in as needed and making this fundraiser such a success!

Well, as I prepare for another deployment next month, I must say that the San Diego AB’s are in good hands. LCDR Frank Fuentes will be stepping in to fill the void I leave behind. We are excited to be hosting the 2013 ABMA Working Group Conference/Symposium and look forward to seeing everyone next year in Virginia. Until the next time my friends…stay well, play safe, keep healthy and God Speed!!

PACNORWEST AB's would like to start off by wishing everyone a safe but enjoyable holiday season. This has been a busy time for many of use and with all that goes on, we still do our jobs safely and professionally. We would like to extend our many thanks to all those who have sent in emails of appreciation for this year's ABMA. The team came through with flying colors.

For those seasoned here in PACNORWEST, the winter months bring on the grey overcast days that includes our unique "SAD" (Seasonal Acclamation Disorder) times. We often find creative ways to off-set this with plenty of things to do. Oddly enough our local critters give us warning of the winter weather to come and this year is no exception. We see winter fast approaching with heavy snow in the mountains. Some ski slopes will even open this weekend with snow fall down to 500 feet.

The folks on Nimitz are busy wrapping up their DPIA and moving to Everett, while others are making plans for Reagan's arrival. We wish those on Washington and Stennis safe travels and "Keep 'em flying". Lincoln is in final stages of making plans to embark on their long journey east and as a result of all this, we have a lot of families moving in different directions. Whidbey Island is cold this time of year with lots of wind/weather through the straits. We all wish them well.

We would like to take time to recognize and congratulate all the recent advancements and retirements. Bravo Zulu to all those new petty officers, Chiefs and LDO/CWO's and especially to our new Captains and CO's. On a side note, the many long hours to prepare weapons, armament, stores, for the annual retiree Elk hunting expedition this year resulted in cold feet, lots of headaches and OBTW, no Elk. PS, the jackets on bullets are wearing thin. Maybe - next year.

The FRA Weds lunch bunch is still going strong with attendees like: David Deese, Odie Kennedy, Ernie Jones, Bob Laford, Marv Romack, Fred Malavolti, Tom Huffman, Damon Taylor, Mike Yaskin, with the occasional visit of crew from the 68 and special out of town guests. If you're ever in town, remember that every Weds, at the FRA, Bremerton - Noonish until whenever. If you're ever in our area, stop by and we'll make you feel right at home. Until then, be safe.

Mike

The Evening Prayer

I am convinced, Our Father, that your fondest feelings are reserved for the least pretentious and most genuine

of us. I am sure that Aviation Boatswain’s Mates are some of your favorites. Certainly Aviation Boatswain’s

Mates have yet to find the virtues of humility, or soft-spokenness or gentleness…

They do lead with their jaws….

And they always seem to be more ready to fight than to switch. They can be singled out by their red eyes,

and by a grubbiness which is a mark of their trade.

But their wills match their strong backs...

And their love of each other is a wondrous thing to behold.

They are the salt of the deck…

And the saltiness is honest and open…

And they are uniquely Your sons. We are grateful for them…

As you love them specially, we mark them particularly tonight.

Bless them every one…

And forever keep them from harm and hurt…

In Christ’s name, Amen.

R. W. Bedingfield, Chaplain (USN)
