Context

Tracey, TA in Y3 was wanting to introduce a spelling intervention she had used previously whilst the class teacher was wanting to introduce the Spellosaur app to address issues of spelling LKS2 non-curriculum words. During liaison time (RIV), discussions took place and it was decided that the 2 approaches would complement each other.

Account of Practice

Using all curriculum books containing writing, 5 mis-spelt words are identified and recorded in a target-word book;

Words are used in context, in a sentence;

Words are entered on the Spellosaur app;

Child practises spelling the words, using the app at school and also at home, if possible;

TA tests the child a week later.

The Spellosaur app has 4 levels:

Level 1 – listen and choose the correct word Level 2 – complete the missing letters in the word Level 3 – unscramble the letters to spell the word correctly Level 4 – type the word

Mobilise Account of Practice Reflection

The teacher and TA have both noticed that spelling has improved in class. Children in Y3 are applying the spellings in writing across the curriculum, in addition to learning the words on the LKS2 list.

Lacie in Y3 said, ‘It’s helping me to learn my words and I’m using them in class. I practise my target words at home.’

Jessica in Y3 said, ‘It helps me get my spellings right when I’m writing something, like a letter. I’m more confident when I’m writing now.’

Tracey (TA) said ‘It’s great that the children are using the app independently to practise and self-assess and are growing in confidence as well as applying their spellings in all their writing.’
