“To Tell a Story”

This is project will build upon process and craftsmanship and connection to details. Building advanced clay making and sculpture techniques includes planning and thought.

Taking time to join each “piece” to the main structure using a slip and score technique.

Upon finishing students works should be able to conjure up stories and possibilities for the written word. For example if you look at the picture of the old tree fort….what stories could possibly be written about an old tree fort…OR… The father figure holding a young child in the air…

To begin, students will be required to create a 2-d drawing (blue print) that explains the process and production of how to make each part and how each part supports and coexists with the next. Students should draw each part that needs to be made. Then,

after blue prints are drawn and presented students will receive clay to begin construction.

The more difficult part of the process will be transforming a two dimensional idea or drawing in to a three dimensional sculpture.

“BEADS” These two projects will take place at the same time.

Students will be asked to create small simple textured decorative clay beads. These will be fired and later used to create cool hemp necklaces. We will explore the basic types of knots and techniques associated with this form of macramé work popular today. Extra clay and smaller leftover’s from student large project will be used to create beads.

Rubrics for both:

Projects will be subjectively discussed in a peer critique which will produce a “grade” for each project. Students will be encouraged to explain and discuss their work as well as others. Their discussions/grades will focus on:

CRAFTSMANSHIP: This will be the primary focus

THOUGHT: the ability to follow an idea through to finished work

ORIGINALITY: Is this an idea that is truly yours

AESTHETICS: The general over all appearance and beauty of the finished product
