ACTIVITY REPORT JAN - MAR 2016 Introduction This report sets out activity for the second quarter of the Project’s final year - Year 3 ‘History of Tourism’. The report follows the same format as within the Action Plan submitted in the original bid for funding. There are additional elements at the end of the table which pick up previously uncompleted activity or where activities are naturally continuing from year to year. Please refer to the Project spreadsheets which document the figures used within the table below. The table sets out an ongoing tally of outputs for the entire Project (column 4), quantifying activity since August 2013 (the Project start). Targets for Year 3 appear in column 2, and then the overall tally of activity for Year 3 appears in column 3. For a full written description of activity for each previous quarter of the Project please refer to the details set out in previous reports. A vast array of the interpretative outputs from the Project are publicly available within the National Park Centre in Lynmouth as well as other locations around Exmoor, not to mention the feast of film, photos and material accessible on YouTube, Flickr, the Project webpage and Exmoor National Park website as well as via the App ‘Discover Exmoor’. The Project Facebook page is very active and all events and activities are regularly tweeted, with weekly posts such as #FlashbackFriday tying in with our current interpretative themes. Please refer to those outputs as well as this report to gain a full picture of the Project’s activity. 1

ACTIVITY REPORT

JAN - MAR 2016

Introduction

This report sets out activity for the second quarter of the Project’s final year - Year 3 ‘History of Tourism’.

1 event was run during this quarter – the very successful Book Day held throughout the National Park Centre in Lynmouth to which approximately 200 people came. Nine separate local authors were on hand to sign books and talk about what inspired them to write and draw about Exmoor. A rolling programme of talks by each author in turn was offered in the Audio-Visual Theatre, covering topics from Exmoor Hill Farming to cloud seeding, ghost stories and poems. A particular draw was the presence of Davey the lovingly-restored vintage tractor who was scrambled on by many children (and adults!) – star of the local children’s cartoon books.

Each stag will contain a riddle developed by local school children. Chris aims to attract additional funding to support this ambitious project. At present we are clarifying planning requirements before the project hopefully proceeds during the Summer Term with the interested schools from each village. Summary

The Project team has been enthused by the interest shown in the Holidays Past memory collection Project during this quarter, and support from businesses has been higher than anticipated. In addition to that, highlights from this quarter include:

We posted a photograph on social media as part of our Romantic Exmoor theme, showing a local couple getting married. A lady in Australia saw the post and recognised the couple as her Grandparents, and she had never seen the photo before. Via social media comments about the photo she was then in touch with her second cousin who lives in England. From the Mary Orchard Collection, held on the Project archives, we were then able to find her other old photographs of her Grandparents and Great Grandparents, as well as an oral history recording of her Grandmother. Listening to her Grandmother she recognised a lot of expressions of speech which were familiar from her own mother. It was very special for all family members and for Project staff.

ACTIVITY REPORT

JAN - MAR 2016

A member of the public saw one of the Project’s Press Releases asking for old photos of holidays on Exmoor, and she brought in several interesting and unusual photos of elephants in Minehead, probably from the circus.

Very excited to have the Heritage Placements on board from English Heritage, researching Victorian Exmoor and History of Exmoor Tourism for the Project and coming up with innovative interpretation ideas.
