Rob (Ears) Tully, My Best Friend I first met bob early 1967 at Harry Lever’s House Party’s all the mods would meet at Harry’s before the wheel and come back in the early hour. Bob used to have drums at his mums and I’d go around to listen, He was into The Small Faces & Spencer Davis, Aretha, and Otis. he was a young mod and danced very off beat and funkish. He was the first person I saw dance free-style. and not with a girl, Al Pilky, got us to go to the Wheel and the Cromwellian there we heard more soul, Rob started to go to the Mecca with Trev muhic and was friends with the DJs.Tony Jebb, & Les Cockell, Rob had some great records, we pooled all our records together and started to do a few soul disco’s travelling in my old police car, we got a resident at the Geraldo, Trev got an House we all lived in, like most Rob lived for the Week-end visiting the Mecca, Torch & Wigan. Robs fav Artiste is Otis Redding. He is a big fan of Reggea and Ska & likes most music genres.

Sue Trapasso Joined the Team at Joe's in 2009, having been Djing at the Birchfield Club Widnes. Sue comes from Stoke and went the Golden Torch from 1967 and saw live acts there before it was a all-nighter, Sue moved to Liverpool in the 70s. She’s been collecting Northern soul for nearly 40 years and has a few thousand, her favourite Artiste is Jacky Wilson and her fav record is Just Be Sincere;

Pete Thomas - I got into Motown about 1968 at a friends party when I realised all my favourites records where all on the same label. It progressed to northern soul just as the Casino started doing the all-nighters.  I have been a keen collector since then. My favourite record is  “If that's what you wanted” by Frankie Beverly & the Butlers. Records I like most are up-tempo numbers, Detroit being my favourite. Got behind the decks just after Wigan closed, there was nowhere to go so Gaz Beach and myself decided to do a soul-nite so that's how the Connie Club in Sutton started. After that I did a regular spot at the Saints club and have had a few spots at Joes. Born in Prescott but lived and worked in St Helens most of my life, worked at Sidac for 28 years as a Printer, and came to this club to the Saturday night disco, before going on to the Casino .

Chisser It started for me in 1961 having a dance with Denise Anks to lets Twist Again, by Chubby Checker at Sutton Nash school's Christmas Party, this became my first record, on the Green Columbia label DB4961 followed by Sam Cooke's Chain Gang and the Drifters

Save The last Dance For Me and it has been my vice ever since buying these little Black Gems. My first djing was about 1966 at Derbyhill youth club between the Band sets on Thursday nights. Then I played at the Geraldo club with a couple of mates of mine Trev Muhic & Rob Tully until late 1972. My favourite Artiste is Bobby Womack. Ktf

Featured Artiste Gladys Knight & the Pips Part 1

Gladys Maria Knight (born May 28, 1944), known as the "Empress of Soul", is an American recording artist, songwriter, businesswoman, humanitarian and author. A seven-time Grammy Award-winner, she is best known for the hits she recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, for both the Motown and Buddah Records labels, with her group Gladys Knight & the Pips, which included her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight and her cousins Edward Patten and William Guest.

Gladys was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of Sarah Elizabeth (née Woods) and Merald Woodlow Knight, Sr., a postal worker. She first achieved minor fame by winning $200 on Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour TV show contest at the age of 7 in 1952. The following year, she, her, sister Brenda, brother Merald and cousins William and Elenor Guest formed a musical group called the Pips (named after another cousin, James "Pip" Woods). By the end of the decade, the act had begun to tour, The group had replaced Brenda Knight and Eleanor Guest with Gladys Knight's cousin Edward Patten

A local Atlanta club owner named Clifford Hunter (who had booked the Pips at his Club) started his own label with a friend, Tommy Brown and called it Hun-tom, and recorded the group on the 1952 Johnny Otis penned “Every Beat of My Heart” (original recorded by the Royals).  It was released in early 1961. On the Huntom 2510, it was picked up and released by Vee Jay 386 it went to # 1 on the R&B charts. At the same time, the group signed with Bobby Robinson's Fury label In New York and was in the Beltones Recording Studios and released another version Fury 1050 and with the success of their Don Covay classic follow-up, "Letter Full Of Tears", Fury 1054 which went to #3 on the R&B charts They released their first album. four more singles were released on Fury 1052 - Guess Who / Stop Running Around - 1961 and Fury 1064 - Operator / I'll Trust In You - 1962 Fury 1067 – Darling / Linda – 1962 & Fury 1073 - Come See About Me / I Want That Kind Of Love - 1963 but none charted

Gladys Knight has been married four times and has three children. In 1960, she married her high school sweetheart, James Newman. They had one son, James "Jimmy" Newman (1962–1999). She retired from the road to raise their child while the Pips toured on their own. In 1963, after having her only daughter, Kenya, Knight returned to recording with the Pips in order to support her family. In 1964s, Gladys, James, and the Pips moved to Detroit and joined Larry Maxwell's Maxx label in 1964 and released several modest hits produced by Van McCoy, Maxx 326 Giving Up / Maybe Baby –1964 #6 r&b chart Maxx 329 - Lovers Always Forgive / Another Love – 1964 Maxx 331 - Either Way I Lose / Go Away, Stay Away – 1964 and The Northern Soul Favourite Maxx 334 - Stop And Get A Hold Of Myself */ Who Knows - 1965 and Maxx 335 - Tell Her You're Mine / If I Should Ever Be In Love – 1965 but no big charters yet they were never out of work and were booked in 1966 as special guests on a Motown package tour.

Gladys Knight & the Pips joined the Motown Records roster in 1966, and was put on the soul imprint, her first single was the Northern Favourite Soul 35023 - Just Walk In My Shoes / Stepping Closer To Your Heart 1966 it reached #35 in the UK, her second was the brilliant Soul 35033 Take Me In Your Arms And Love Me / Do You Love Me Just A Little More? 1967 peaking at #13 in the UK. Although initially regarded as a second-string act, they had several major hit singles, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine",1967 which was the biggest Motown seller at that time #1 R&B #2 Pop. She recorded Soul 35045 - It Should Have Been Me #9 R&B and Nitty Gritty #2 R&B #19 Pop Charts 1968 , the Tempts “I Wish It Would Rain”#15 R&B and their “You’re My Everything” "Didn't You Know (You'd Have to Cry Sometime)"1969 peaked at #11 R&B charts "Friendship Train" (1969)#2 R&B #17 Pop N. Whitfields Funkish “You Need Love Like I Do(Don’t You)#3 R&B 25 pop Charts "If I Were Your Woman" (1970), #1 R&B charts written by Gloria Jones & Pamela Sawyer "I Don't Want To Do Wrong" (1971), #2 R&B chart “Make Me The Woman That You Go Home To” #3 R&B #27 Pop Charts. & Soul 35094 - Help Me Make It Through The Night #13 R&B written By Kris Kristofferson's, Grammy Award" (1972), #1 R&B &2 Pop charts "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye) and a great version of The Look Of Love written by Bacharach & David that didn’t chart anywhere & "Daddy Could Swear (I Declare)" (1973) #2 R&B charts written by J. Bristol & G. Knight .

In their early Motown career, Gladys Knight and the Pips toured as the opening act for Diana Ross and the Supremes. Gladys Knight stated in her memoirs that Ross kicked her off the tour because the audience's reception to Knight's soulful performance over shadowed Ross. Berry Gordy later told Gladys that she was giving his act a hard time. Gladys knight recorded eight albums during her 7 years at Motown, her last two albums went to #1 in the r&b /soul charts and her last gained her a gold Disc. She had 20 Singles released on Soul/Motown. Yet she should have been bigger at Motown

Lots of unissued Motown singles and album tracks and reissues have surfaced on the Northern scene, Gladys knight has had a few “He’s My Kinda Fellow” “Stranger” “It’s Too Late For you And Me “ “Here Are The pieces Of a broken Heart” “No One Could Love You More” “If You Ever Get Your Hands On Love “ “What good Am I Without You “ & from her Touch Album released in 1981 “Baby Baby Don’t Waste My Time”. Like the Isley Brothers & Detroit Spinners, & 4 Tops Gladys Knight & The Pips left Motown for a better deal with Buddah Records in 1973.

Record labels The sound of Philadelphia

Gamble & Huff pt.7 Billy Pauls Album PIR 34389. Let Him In had eight tracks. Main title song was written by Paul & Linda McCartney, two were written by Gamble & Huff and arrange by Bobby Martin, and Five were written by in house writers, main one being Dexter Wansel, and produced by him as well. It reached #27 in the Soul Album Charts, four tracks were released as singles PIR 3621 “Let Him In” / We All Got A Mission” -1977 peaked at only #91 on the soul charts in America, yet reached a respectable #26 in the Uk & PIR3630-“I Trust You”/“Love Won’t Come Easy” 1977 reached # 79 in the States and never charted in the UK.

The first two tracks are what they say, Political ambitions with Billy Paul's version of “Let Him In” is far more explicit than Paul Mac’s in reciting a list of deceased civil rights leaders (Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Medgar Evers, and, Furthermore, are interspersed with verses of memorable passages of speeches by Malcolm X and King. This latest controversial in America followed controversial form his last single “Let’s Make A Baby” from the religious groups Led by Jesse Jackson.

Dee Dee Sharp had a low #67 in the R&B charts in late 1976 on the TSOP label with the 10cc hit “I’m Not In Love” from her album “Happy About The Whole Thing” which was released as a single but didn’t chart 1975

She was now on PIR with her latest Album PIR 34437 What Color Is Love - released in 1977 it had ten Tracks. All good solid tunes completely sung in her own style clean and top diction you hear ever word and syllable top stylish singing but once again not soulYet a very good album from Dee Dee, but no “What kind a Lady” here!

Tracks are : I Believe In Love , Just As Long As I Know You're Mine, Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again, I Wanna Be Your Woman Flashback, Nobody Could Take Your Place, What Color Is Love? I'd Really Love To See You Tonight, Hang Your Portrait, What Color Is Love. Her first single pulled was PIR 3625 “Nobody Can Take Your Place” / “Flashback”-1977 it didn’t chart

Next single was PIR 3627 “Let’s Clean Up The Ghetto Part 1&2 from all the PIR Stars The intro was by Lou Rawls, others include Billy Paul, O’Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Dee Dee Sharp, & Archie Bell a typical Philly Sound. Because of austerity measures in America some of the cities were nearly bankrupt in Philly their refuge men were on strikes and the council workers wanted more pay, consequently the streets were full of refuge with rats, and roaches. this became one of Gamble & Huff statements later it led to a more organized work scheme for the youth of Philadelphia a Charity and workshop, and later spread nationwide, it peaked at #4 in States #6 in UK.

Archie Bell & The Drells released PIR 3632 “Glad You Can Make It” /”There’s No Other Like You”-1977From their forthcoming Album PIR 34855 Hard Not To Like It, It charted at #63 on the soul charts 17th Sept’ 197Next was Teddy’s PIR 3633 –Whole Towns laughing which reached #16 on the soul charts

Next release from Lou Rawls forthcoming New Album PIR 35036 When You Hear Lou, You've Heard It All Was Lou Rawls PIR3634 Lady Love / Not The Staying Kind -1977 once again Lou was in top form singing the mid tempo Philly ballad, on lou’s records the main thing is his rich vocals, the band and backing vocals are for minimum effect so smooth! It reached the #5 Adult Charts and #21 on the soul charts and #24 on the pop charts in the states The album is typical MOR aimed at the American market, lady love is best track followed by the samba rhythm “There Will Be Love,” which should have been a great track if had a soul/disco beat. Other tracks are ok.

Billy Paul’s Brilliant PIR3635 Only The Strong Survive / Where I Belong – 1977 was next reaching #68 in the soul charts in America and a respectable #33 in the UK Pop charts of 1977 taken from his new album of the same name” Only The Strong Survive” PIR 34923-1977 only eight tracks reaching #36 on the album soul charts.I personally don’t like covers, Yet this just runs along uplifting Philly soul, I think Jerry Butler would like this

Dee Dee Sharp’s release PIR3636 “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight”/“What Color Is Love”-1977 non chartArchie Bell & The Drells PIR 3637 “ I’ve Been Missing You” / “It’s Hard Not To Love You”-1977 reached #56
