OPENING. (5 min.)How will you communicate what is about to happen? How will you communicate how it will happen? How will you communicate its importance? How will you communicate connections to previous lessons? How will you engage students and capture their interest?

MATERIALS.

The opening begins with a Christmas Music Video by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I then introduce the concept of “tradition” and compare this with “routine.” I then explain that several cultures around the world have various celebrations and traditions throughout December, January, and February. After I ask the students to tell me the biggest holiday in China during this period, I then jump into Christmas.

INTRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIAL. (__ min.) What key points will you emphasize and reiterate? How will you ensure that students actively take-in information? How will you vary your approach to make information accessible to all students? Which potential misunderstandings will you anticipate? Why will students be engaged/interested? I proceed to introduce the concept of why we celebrate Christmas and ask for volunteers to describe why they celebrate Spring Festival. I proceed with this comparative collection through a number of Christmas traditions, including Dates, Food, Music, Decorations, relation to family, and Gifts. Throughout this, I have a couple of videos and many images.

GUIDED PRACTICE. (__ min.)How will you clearly state and model behavioral expectations? How will you ensure that all students have multiple opportunities to practice? How will you scaffold practice exercises from easy to hard? How will you monitor and correct student performance? Why will students be engaged/interested? The guided Practice and the INM heavily overlap throughout this lesson. Each of the new vocab words I introduce, I follow up with a questions about Spring Festival in which students apply the word or concept they have learned towards their own festival.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE. (__ min.)How will you clearly state and model behavioral expectations? In what ways will students attempt to demonstrate independent mastery of the objective? How will you provide opportunities for extension? Why will students be engaged/interested? During the IP students are presented with a series of open-ended questions in which they must use the practice vocab words to develop an answer. I will then call on various students to provide their response. Some of the questions include, what do you want for Christmas and why?; how and what would you decorate for Christmas?; what would you cook for a Christmas meal?CLOSING. (__ min.)How will students summarize what they learned? How will students be asked to state the significance of what they learned? How will you provide all students with opportunities to demonstrate mastery of (or progress toward) the objective? Why will students be engaged/interested? The closing consists of reviewing each of the learned vocab words through Choral repetition. They will have to match these vocab words to a given picture.

IMMEDIATE REFLECTIONComplete within 24 hours after teaching the lesson

1. Please provide a description of the students you taught (e.g., grade level, number of students, special characteristics, duration of lesson etc.).

I taught 61 students who are some of the top English speakers I teach. They are all Senior 1 students and the class is 40 minutes long.

2. How many of your students fully achieved the lesson objective (please provide the number of students)? How do you know? If not, what are you going to do during the next class period with these students to ensure that they achieve, or work toward achieving, the objective?

Based on the IP, I would say that the great majority of the students understood the lesson objective. I will continue to include a lot of student participation throughout the GP and IP to best observe the level of understanding among students.

3. What did you do to ensure that all students were able to participate during the lesson? How did you target lower-level students? Shy students? Advanced students?

I always use a great deal of choral repetition when it comes to learning new vocabulary words. I also circulate the class and cold call on students from across the class.

4. Which one part of the lesson was most successful? Why? How do you know?

Page 3: Web viewThe opening begins with a Christmas Music Video by the Trans-Siberian ... Festival in which students apply the word or concept they have

I most enjoyed seeing the comparison between the Spring Festival and Christmas. It was interesting to see how the students engaged with the comparison, looking at both the similarities and differences. Their active participation made me feel like it was a successful element of the class.

5. Which one part of the lesson needed the most improvement? How do you know? How would you improve it if you could teach the lesson again?

The IP would need the most improvement. We probably could have used a little more time to carry out the IP. But other than being a little rushed it seemed to go well. I will teach the lesson again, so I will try to make the GP more succinct.

6. Did you need to modify your lesson plan during class? If so, why? How did you modify the plan?

No, I did not need to modify my lesson plan.

7. What patterns in your preparation/teaching can be improved?

Overall, I felt like the lesson went really well. During the GP, I should perhaps focus more on getting quieter students to speak. I am more successful at reaching out to quiet students during the IP.

8. What was your favorite part of the lesson? What was your students’ favorite part of the lesson?

I believe that the mutual favorite part of the lesson was learning about the Christmas traditions and comparing these with the Chinese traditions. I think food and decorations were perhaps the best parts.

9. After teaching this lesson, do you have any questions you would like addressed regarding teaching methodologies, strategies, or activities?

Not at the moment. Thanks
