Lord’s Prayer Lesson #1Lesson- Our Father in Heaven-TrinityStory- Jesus’ baptism, Matthew 13-17Main Characters- Jesus, John the Baptist, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit

Ice-breaker- (3-4 minutes) Discuss the importance and the role of a father to his children. Why is a dad/father important to his kids?

In Matthew 6:9-13, Jesus demonstrates how we ought to pray. To whom does He address prayer?

“Our Father in heaven,” ; God the Father

Through different passages in the Bible, including Jesus’ prayer and the story of His baptism, we learn that God is made up of three persons. Who are they?

God the Father, God the Son: Jesus, and God the Holy Spirit. How can God be three persons? Think of an egg. It’s made up of three components: the shell, the yolk, and the white, yet it is just one complete thing, an egg.

In the story of Jesus’ baptism where we see the three persons of God, where was Jesus baptized?

In the Jordan river

Who baptized Jesus?John the Baptist

What was John the Baptist’s response when Jesus came to him to be baptized?Matt. 3:14 “. . . “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’”

John recognized that Jesus was the Messiah- (or the son of God)

Jesus hadn’t done anything wrong. He didn’t need to repent. If Jesus didn’t need to repent, then why did He get baptized?

(Summary of NIV Bible’s footnotes)1. “to fulfill all righteousness”; to show that He was consecrated to God the

Father and approved by Him2. John publicly announced the arrival of the Messiah and the start of His

ministry3. Jesus identified Himself with man’s sin, becoming our substitute

*4. It was an example to His followers

(Lesson continued on back)

Why should we get baptized?

1. To make a public confession that we have already begun to follow Jesus

2. To follow Jesus’ example and obey what He asked us to doMatt. 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. . .”

3. To symbolize Jesus’ death, burial and resurrectionRom. 6:4 “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”

What happened after Jesus was baptized and went up out of the water?Matt 3:16-17 “. . .At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Whose voice said, “This is my Son. . .”?God the Father’s

Who descended like a dove? The Spirit of God; The Holy Spirit

Close your group in prayer or invite one of the kids to close in prayer demonstrating prayer addressed to God the Father.

Lord’s Prayer Lesson #2Lesson- Hallowed be your nameStory- Angels worshipping God around the throne- Revelation 4:6-11Main Characters- Angels and God

Ice-breaker- (3-4 minutes) What is the best compliment that anyone has ever given you? How did it make you feel?

Giving people compliments is a way to show love to them. How do we show love to God?

One way that we show love to God is by worshipping him. What do you think it means to worship God?

There are several ways that we can show our worship to God? Singing songs to him- 1 Chronicles 16:9- Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of

all his wonderful acts. Live our lives in a way that please God- Romans 12:1-2- Brothers and sisters,

God has shown you his mercy. So I am asking you to offer up your bodies to him while you are still alive. Your bodies are a holy sacrifice that is pleasing to God. When you offer your bodies to God, you are worshiping him. 2 Don't live any longer the way this world lives. Let your way of thinking be completely changed. Then you will be able to test what God wants for you. And you will agree that what he wants is right. His plan is good and pleasing and perfect.

Give an offering to God- 2 Corinthians 9:7- Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Tell other people about God- If we tell other people about the good things that God has done, it is a way to worship him.- Mark 16:15- He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.

Who wrote the book of Revelation? John

In the vision that John had, who did he see worshipping God? 24 people wearing crowns sitting on thrones surrounding God’s throne 4 creatures that all looked different

What did the 4 creatures say to God?  "Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God who rules over all.    He was, and he is, and he will come."

How many times did that repeat those words? They never stopped saying it.

(Continued on back)

Page 4: joeschafer.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web view(Summary of NIV Bible’s footnotes) “to fulfill all righteousness”; to show that He was consecrated to God the Father and approved

What did the 24 people who were wearing crowns do and say to show their worship? They layed their crowns down in front of God They said "You are worthy, our Lord and God! You are worthy to receive glory

and honor and power. You are worthy because you created all things.

Why do you think that they never stopped worshipping God?

Why does God deserve our worship?

Close your group in prayer and ask each child in your group to pray and show worship to God by telling God how great he is. (don’t force anyone to do this, but get as many kids that are willing to participate.)

Lord’s Prayer Lesson #3Lesson- Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven: God’s WillStory- Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, Matthew 26:36-46Main Characters-Jesus

Ice-breaker- (3-4 minutes) Have you ever had a hard time doing what your parents asked you to do?

In this story, where did Jesus go with his disciples to pray?Gethsemane

How was Jesus feeling emotionally?Matt 26:37-38(NIV) “. . .he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. . .”

What did Jesus ask his disciples to do?Mt. 26:38 “. . .Stay here and keep watch with me.”

To whom did Jesus pray?/Who was Jesus praying to?God the Father (Remind them of the discussion of the Trinity earlier in the Prayer

unit.)

What was Jesus referring to when He prayed to God the Father, “if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.” ?

Jesus knew that He was getting ready to go through a difficult time during which He would be arrested and be crucified on a cross.

Although Jesus was troubled knowing about what He would have to endure, what did Jesus pray to God the Father that helps us to know that He wouldn’t run away even when there was something difficult that He was supposed to do?

Jesus prayed, “Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Mt. 26:39He prayed two more times, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be

taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” Mt. 26:42,44Jesus was willing to do what God’s will was, what God wanted Jesus to do.

Why was God’s will for Jesus to be arrested and then to die on the cross?Jesus was completely innocent of sin, so He was able to be a sacrifice for all of our sin (John 1: 29, Hebrews 4:15) Because all of us have sinned (Rom. 3:23), not one of us would have escaped being punished (Rom. 6:23) and not being allowed in God’s presence (Matt. 25:41). God provided a way through Jesus so that Jesus could take our punishment and allow us to get to be in God’s presence some day in heaven. (Lesson continued on back)

Page 6: joeschafer.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web view(Summary of NIV Bible’s footnotes) “to fulfill all righteousness”; to show that He was consecrated to God the Father and approved

When Jesus taught the disciples how to pray in Matthew 6:10, He stated, “your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” We ought to have the attitude that we will listen to what God’s will is for us to accomplish while we are here on earth. Jesus prayed this way and followed through even though it was difficult. He knows what it is like when you are challenged to do God’s will(Hebrews 4:15), but it will always be possible for you to do His will (I Corinthians 10:13).

Name some things that is God’s will for all of us.For example demonstrating the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)

Obeying the ten commandments (Exodus 20/Deuteronomy 5) Being saved (2 Peter 3:9) Being baptized (Acts 2:38, Mark 16:16, Matt 28:19)

What are ways that we can learn God’s will?Read the BiblePray for God to show you His will for your life

Why should we follow God’s will for our life?He knows us best and cares for us. (Jeremiah 29:11, Matt. 7:9-11)

Name one thing that you think is God’s will for you.Ex. Making friends with the new student in school Being kind to your brother/sister

Close your group in prayer. Allow opportunity for kids to acknowledge what Jesus did by obeying God’s will and for any to be saved who haven’t yet accepted Jesus as Savior.

Lord’s Prayer Lesson #4Lesson- Give us today our daily bread- Prayer RequestsStory- Jesus feeds the 4,000, Matthew 15:29-39; Mark 8:1-10Note: NIV translation was usedMain Characters-Jesus, Disciples, Multitude of people

Ice-breaker- (3-4 minutes) Have you ever had to wait awhile to eat?

Great crowds of people came to Jesus on a mountainside near the Sea of Galilee. They brought the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others. What did Jesus do for these people in need?

Jesus healed them. (Matt. 15:29-30)

How did the people respond when they saw people being healed? They were amazed and they praised the God of Israel (Matt. 15:31)

How many days did people remain with Jesus while on the mountainside?Three days (Matt. 15:32)

Why did Jesus want to provide food for the people who had been with Him there on the mountainside?

“I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.” (Matt. 15:32)

How many loaves did the disciples have?Seven. They also had a few small fish. (Matt. 15:34)

What did Jesus do with the seven loaves and the fish?He gave thanks and broke them and gave them to the disciples to give to the

people. (Matt. 15:36)

After everyone ate and was satisfied how many baskets of food were gathered?Seven (Matt. 15:37)

How many people besides women and children were there that ate?Four thousand (Matt. 15:38)

When we pray in Matthew 6:11 “Give us today our daily bread,” we pray for God to provide our needs. Besides food, list other daily needs.

Ex. Clothing, shelter, water

(Lesson continued on back)

Page 8: joeschafer.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web view(Summary of NIV Bible’s footnotes) “to fulfill all righteousness”; to show that He was consecrated to God the Father and approved

Of course, God is almighty and capable of doing more than just providing us with food. On the mountainside, before Jesus fed the four thousand people, He healed people with all kinds of problems. People came requesting healing for their friends and for themselves. In Matthew 7:7-11 Jesus says, “Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find; knock and the door will be open to you. For everyone who asks receives, he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Discuss this passage.)

Jesus encourages us to bring our prayer requests to God. What prayer requests do you have for God?

(Take prayer requests and encourage the children to pray for one another’s needs, as well as their own.)

Lord’s Prayer Lesson #5Lesson- Forgive us our debts- confessionStory- Israel confesses sin and defeats PhilistinesMain Characters- Samuel, Israelites, Philistines

Ice-breaker- (3-4 minutes) Does anyone want to tell a story about a time that they did something wrong and their parents made them go to someone and apologize?

What were the Israelites doing that displeased God? Worshipping false gods

What were the names of the gods they were worshipping? Baal Ashtoreth

Who told the Israelites that what they were doing was wrong? Samuel

What did Samuel tell them that they had to do to truly serve God? Get rid of their false gods

What did Samuel say would happen if they got rid of the false gods? They could defeat the Philistines

What did the Israelites do after Samuel told them this? They gathered at Mizpah They fasted for a day and prayed to God They confessed their sins to God

What did the Philistines do when they heard that the Israelites were all getting together in one spot?

They planned an attack

The Israelites found out that the Philistines were going to attack them and they were scared, but what did Samuel tell them to do?

Continue to pray to God

As they prayed to God, the Philistines arrived ready for battle, but God confused them and the Israelites won the battle.

God wants us to confess the things that we do wrong. When you confess the things that you do wrong, does that always mean that you will not get punished?

Sometimes it is not easy to confess the things that we have done. Many times it means we may get in trouble, but it is the right thing to do.

Page 10: joeschafer.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web view(Summary of NIV Bible’s footnotes) “to fulfill all righteousness”; to show that He was consecrated to God the Father and approved

Tell about a time that you confessed something that you did. What happened?

No matter what we do wrong, God wants us to confess it to him. We should also apologize to other people when we do something to hurt them. It is not always easy, but it is the right thing to do.

How many of you have done something wrong this week that you need to confess or apologize for? (encourage them to do that this week, but don’t ask them what it was)

Close in prayer and ask God to forgive us for the things we have done.

Lord’s Prayer Lesson #6Lesson- We forgive our debtors(Matt. 6:12)-Forgive othersStory-Parable of the Unmerciful Servant, Matthew 18:21-35Note: NIV translation was usedMain Characters-Jesus, Peter, king, unforgiving servant

Ice-breaker- (3-4 minutes) Did you ever tell someone, “Sorry” and you meant it, but he or she didn’t believe you and wouldn’t forgive you? How did you feel?

When Peter came to Jesus (in Matt. 18:21) and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?”, what did Jesus say?

“I tell you not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” (Matt. 18:22) (Some versions, like KJV, say seventy times seven)

What did Jesus mean when He said that Peter should forgive his brother seventy-seven times? Did Jesus mean that Peter should forgive his brother only 77 times and then stop forgiving him?

No. Since Peter asked if he should only forgive his brother 7 times, Jesus used the much bigger number to emphasize that we should not limit our forgiveness, but continue to forgive others.

(In Luke 17:4 Jesus says, “If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, ‘I repent,’ forgive him.” Again, Jesus isn’t really focusing on a number.

Jesus is saying forgive as many times as the other person repents or is sorry.)

In the story, the king had a servant who owed him 10,000 talents(money). The servant was not able to pay the debt, so what was the king going to do in order to have the debt be repaid?

The king ordered that the servant, his wife, and children and everything that the servant owned to be sold to pay back the debt.

How did the king react when the servant begged the king to be patient with him to give him time to pay back the money that he owed?

The king took pity on the servant, canceled the debt, and let the servant go. The servant didn’t have to pay back anything at all!

When the forgiven servant found another servant who owed him money, he wanted to be paid back immediately. We wouldn’t cancel the debt or give the other servant more time to be able to pay him back. He threw the other servant into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw this, who did they tell what happened?

They told their master, the king, how the servant that had been forgiven his debt wouldn’t forgive a fellow servant’s debt.

(Lesson continued on back)

Page 12: joeschafer.files.wordpress.com€¦ · Web view(Summary of NIV Bible’s footnotes) “to fulfill all righteousness”; to show that He was consecrated to God the Father and approved

How did the king feel about how the servant he had forgiven treated the other servant? The king was upset because the servant should have followed the example of how the king showed him mercy and should have forgiven the other servant.

So then what did the king do to the servant whose debt he had originally canceled? The king had the unmerciful and unforgiving servant put into prison.

Has someone sinned against you, lied to you, hurt your feelings with mean words, or took away a toy that you were playing with? If he/she comes and tells you, “Sorry,” what are you supposed to do? Is it ok to ignore that person or be mean back?

The Bible says:Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Colossians 3:13 “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

How does God feel when we choose not to forgive someone?

The Bible says:Matthew 6:14-15 “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Mark 11:25-26 “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your sins.”

Close your group in prayer.

Lord’s Prayer- Lesson #8Lesson- Thine is the kingdom and the power and gloryStory-Israel praises God for saving them- Exodus 13-15Main Characters- Moses and the Israelites, Pharaoh and the Egyptians Ice-breaker- What is the nicest thing that anyone has ever done for you?

What was the problem that the Isrealites had at the beginning of the story? They were slaves to the Egyptians

Once Pharaoh let the Israelites go, he changed his mind and sent his men after them.

What did Pharaoh send after the Israelites?600 of his best chariots and other chariots and had officers in charge of each one.

The Israelites did not have chariots, so the Egyptians were much faster than them. They had to stay far ahead to get away, but what was in their path that stopped them?

The Red Sea

As the Israelites were stopped by the Red sea, and the Egyptians were catching up to them, what did they begin to do?

Complain saying that it would have been better for them to stay in Egypt as slaves

What did God tell Moses to do? Stretch out his staff over the sea and part the water

What did God do as Moses obeyed? Sent a strong wind that parted the sea. The ground was completely dry, and there

was a wall of water on each side of them. God also threw the Egyptians into a panic so they were confused God also ruined the wheels on the Egyptians chariots and the wheels would not

turn easily and it made their chariots hard to drive.

After all the of the Israelites passed though the Red Sea the Egyptians tried to follow, but what happened?

The water came back and wiped out all of the Egyptians

After all this happened, what did the Israelites do? They sang praise to God

Remember the Israelites were complaining when they thought that the Egyptians were going to get them, but God showed them how much he loved them when he protected him.

It is always important to be thankful for what God has done for us.
