Creating a Pop Art image:

Create the background colour:

1. Open your chosen image.

2. Duplicate the layer.

3. Create a brand new layer at the top of the stack and fill it with a light colour of your choice.

4. Reorder the stack so that new blue layer is between the two existing layers…see right.

Remove the existing background:

1. Select the Polygonal lasso tool and set a feather radius of about 2 pixels

2. Draw a fairly accurate selection around the part of the image you want to transform into the pop art effect.

3. At the bottom of the layers palette click the mask tool to add a mask to the layer – the coloured layer will appear as a background…see right.

Create a shading effect:

1. Click on the image part of the same layer in the layers palette.

2. Click Image>Adjustments>Threshold to open the Threshold command.

3. Adjust the Threshold appropriately and click OK.

4. Click Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur and apply 2 pixels of blur.

Colour the image:

1. Duplicate the top model layer by dragging the layer over the new layer button at the bottom of the layers palette.

2. Hide the top layer and select the duplicated layer below.

3. Click Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation and drag the Lightness slider across to the right

4. Show the top model layer again and change the Blending mode to Multiply.

Add some colour:

1. Select the layer you have just made white and click the new layer button at the bottom of the layers palette to create a new layer between the two top layers.

2. Select the Polygonal lasso tool, add a couple of pixels of feather then create a selection around the face and neck.

3. Use the paint bucket tool to fill the selection with a colour of your choice.

4. Repeat this with the arm.

5. Create another new layer and repeat the above for the hair.

6. Create another new layer and repeat the above for the t-shirt.

7. Create another new layer and repeat the above with the lips.

8. You can continue like this with as many areas as you like depending on your chosen image.

9. Use the Layer opacity setting if you need to adjust the strength of each of the colours a little if required.

10.Finally, rearrange the coloured layers if another layer has covered up some of the coloured detail.
