Starting next week, you will hear an idea that will go along with Ms. Todd’s theme for the year, ABC’s of Crayons to College and Careers. She will be sharing more about this program in your classes. Be ready to listen each day for something that will help you become the best person you can be. Each week there will be one student selected in each class to be entered in a drawing for money to start saving for college and careers.

Monday- August 26, 2013

The ABCs of Crayons to College and Career letter of the week is A. The characteristic we will be watching for this week is Attitude.

Attitudes control our lives. They are a secret power working 24-hours a day. People with positive attitudes are healthier, have more friends, do better in school and live longer. Want to be happy? Think good thoughts.

Tuesday-August 27, 2013

A bad attitude is like a flat tire. You can’t go anywhere until you change it. Where do you want to go?

Wednesday-August 28, 2013

A strong positive attitude creates more miracles than any other thing because life is 10% how you make it and 90% how you take it.

Thursday-August 29, 2013

Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right. (Henry Ford) Have a positive attitude, think you can.

Friday-August 30, 2013

Thomas Edison said “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Now that is a positive attitude and the attitude that helped him find the 1 way that would work.

Teachers, remember to select a student who has shown exemplary Positive Attitude this week to be entered into a drawing for a college savings certificate.

Tuesday- September 3, 2013

The ABCs of Crayons to College and Career letter of the week is B for Behavior.

Manage yourself and mind your manners wherever you go. Staying in control of what you think and feel will help you decide what to do. Be friendly and kind to people. Be a bucket-filler. A simple smile can make someone's day. Your beliefs don’t make you a better person, your behavior does.

Wednesday-September 4, 2013

The winner of the drawing for a college savings certificate showing exemplary Positive Attitude is _______________________________. Remember, this week we are focusing on Behavior.

“Time decides who you meet in life, your heart decides who you want in your life and your behavior decides who stays in your life.” Who do you want in your life?

Thursday-September 5, 2013

Quote by Dr. Seuss. “Today I shall behave, as if this is the day I will be remembered.” Is your behavior today how you want to be remembered tomorrow?

Friday- September 6, 2013

Always love a person so much that he will cry for you. But never behave with a person so bad that he will cry because of you.”

Teachers, remember to select a student who has shown exemplary Behavior this week to be entered into a drawing for a college savings certificate. Drop the card with the child’s name in the crayon by Mrs. Rasmussen in the lunch room.

Monday – September 9, 2013

The ABCs of Crayons to College and Career letter of the week is C for College and Training.

College does not necessarily mean a 4-year degree. Between 2008 and 2018, 63% of job openings will require some postsecondary education. That means you will need some type of education after high school. This could be a commitment of 1, 2, 4 or more years of specialized training

Tuesday – September 10, 2013

Did you know, if you want to be an elementary school teacher, training takes 5-6 years after high school to earn a bachelor’s degree and teaching license. The average teacher in Utah makes $44,750 per year.

Wednesday – September 11, 2013

The winner of the drawing for a college savings certificate showing exemplary Behavior is _______________________________. Remember, this week we are focusing on College and Training.

For those of you who want to be professional athletes such as football, basketball, soccer, dance or other sports, you will need to spend most of your time preparing for the competition. Athletes practice the techniques of their sport and exercise to maintain their fitness to play. Most are discovered while playing on a college team while earning other degrees. The average athlete in Utah earns only $40,350.

Thursday – September 12, 2013

If animals are what you love, you might consider a profession as a veterinarian. Vets must attend at least two years of pre-veterinary courses primarily science classes before enrolling in veterinary school, which then takes another four years to complete. If you want to specialize, you will need more training on top of that. The average vet in Utah earns $83,220.

Friday – September 13, 2013

If fighting crime is the job for you, you might consider being a sheriff or police officer. Besides your high school diploma, you will need to be at least 20 years old, go to police academy training which lasts 3-6 months, and pass a written exam. Many officers also receive bachelor’s degrees in other areas. The average Utah sheriff or cop earns $44,280.

Teachers, this week select a student who can tell you the training that is needed for the job they are interested in or a college they might want to attend. Drop the card with the child’s name in the crayon by Mrs. Rasmussen in the lunch room.

Monday – September 16, 2013

The ABCs of Crayons to College and Career letter of the week is C for Communication.

Can you speak effectively and be a good listener? The way you share your thoughts and express your needs, while listening to other's needs and wishes can either build or burn bridges with friends. Develop skills in speaking, listening, non-verbal, written and visual communication to ensure a successful future.

Tuesday – September 17, 2013

Before you speak, think – is it necessary? Is it true? Is it kind? Will it hurt anyone? Will it improve on the silence? If the answer to any of those is no, maybe you should not say it.

Wednesday - September 18, 2013

The winner of the drawing for a college savings certificate for the theme of College and Training is _______________________________. Remember, this week we are focusing on Communication.

Thursday - September 19, 2013

“A lot of problems in the world would disappear if we talk to each other instead of about each other.” If you have a problem, talk to the person about it kindly and calmly. Use I statements not you statements.

Friday – September 20, 2013

To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others (Anthony Robbins). What I see may be different than what you see but that does not make either of us wrong.

Teachers, remember to select a student who has shown exemplary Communication this week to be entered into a drawing for a college savings certificate. Drop the card with the child’s name in the crayon by Mrs. Rasmussen in the lunch room.

They will encourage and support you in good times and in bad, through success and failure. They are your safety net; let them laugh with you and cry with you.

Tuesday – October 15, 2013
