An early Easter Sermon! _______________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Friends in Christ,

Happy Easter!!! At the time of publishing this Newsletter there are many sermons to prepare and I am saving my thoughts for those. But who better to express something of the joy of the Resurrection of our Lord than St John “the golden-mouthed” doctor of the Church from Constantinople around 400 AD. I wish you every joy in the Risen Lord Jesus, in His love,

-------

Is there anyone who is a devout lover of God?  Let them enjoy this beautiful bright festival!  Is there anyone who is a grateful servant?  Let them rejoice and enter into the joy of their Lord!

Are there any weary with fasting?  Let them now receive their wages!  If any have toiled from the first hour,  let them receive their due reward;  If any have come after the third hour,  let him with gratitude join in the Feast!  And he that arrived after the sixth hour,  let him not doubt; for he too shall sustain no loss.  And if any delayed until the ninth hour,  let him not hesitate; but let him come too.  And he who arrived only at the eleventh hour,  let him not be afraid by reason of his delay.

For the Lord is gracious and receives the last even as the first.  He gives rest to him that comes at the eleventh hour,  as well as to him that toiled from the first.  To this one He gives, and upon another He bestows.  He accepts the works as He greets the endeavor.  The deed He honors and the intention He commends.

Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord!  First and last alike receive your reward;  rich and poor, rejoice together!  Sober and slothful, celebrate the day!

You that have kept the fast, and you that have not,  rejoice today for the Table is richly laden!  Feast royally on it, the calf is a fatted one.  Let no one go away hungry. Partake, all, of the cup of faith.  Enjoy all the riches of His good-ness!

Let no one grieve at his poverty,  for the universal kingdom has been revealed.  Let no one mourn that he has fallen again and again;  for forgiveness has risen from the grave.  Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free.

He has destroyed it by enduring it. He destroyed Hades when He descended into it.  He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh.  Isaiah foretold this when he said,  "You, O Hell, have been troubled by encounter-ing Him below."

Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with.  It was in an uproar because it is mocked.  It was in an uproar, for it is destroyed.  It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated.  It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive.  Hell took a body, and discovered God.  It took earth, and encountered Heaven.  It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see.  O death, where is thy sting?  O Hades, where is thy victory?

Christ is Risen, and you, o death, are annihilated!  Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down!  Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice!  Christ is Risen, and life is liberated!  Christ is Risen, & the tomb is emptied of its dead;  for Christ having risen from the dead,  is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

New Prayer Ministry beginning at Holy Trinity Utrecht_______________________________________________________________________________________Dear brothers and sis-ters,Holy Trinity Utrecht would like to extend its pastoral care with set-ting up a new prayer ministry. That will be offered, when we are ready, at the end of services of worship at Holy Trinity. This is a form of prayer where people can come and ask to be prayed for, for healing of all kinds of needs in a way that invites the Holy Spirit to transform people and sit-uations. Usually the prayer takes about 10 minutes, and it consists of reminding the person that they are in God’s presence, praying for their need, listening to the Spirit and asking God’s blessing for them.I have taken part in a course that intro-duced me to this specific type of prayer and found it is a beautiful way of blessing people and being blessed myself. We have found people willing to come and teach a short version of the course with us, in English!

This will take place on May 30 and June 13, both Saturdays, from 10:00 to 15:00h sharp. Now we are looking for people who are willing and suitable to bless others through this form of prayer. Some of you I know are interested, others I have taken the liberty of asking. Please think about it, join us if you can and maybe you know of someone else that might want to join?Taking part in the course does not oblige you to become part of this new prayer min-istry-team.It can also bless you in your personal prayer, and the way you pray with others in your personal life.David and I really hope you can make it, and look forward to a fruitful two days! Please let me know if you plan to join, so we can continue our preparations. Blessings in Christ,

Update from our Ecumenical Reps: Henk and Judith_______________________________________________________________________________________

Churches explore ways to keep youngsters in the church. Of course this is an on-going process, some churches struggle with it and some are successful. Four churches combine their efforts to make the

Sunday service pleasant for teenagers. These are the Nieuwe kerk, Jacobikerk, Singelkerk and Jeruzalemkerk. Youngsters meet each other in various groups, mainly on a Friday or Saturday night. They cook for themselves, watch movies and discuss matters related to faith. While other member churches are not so successful in raising youth groups the Utrechtse Stedelijke Raad van Kerken (USRK) has sent out an advertisement to find a co-ordinator who may link several youth workers in the churches. (Speak to Henk Korff for further information if you are interested!)

Another event that challenges all churches in Utrecht is the upcoming Grand Départ of the Tour the France, the biggest cycle event in the world. The city expects five to eight hundred spectators. The event will be televised to over 1.3 billon people in more than 100 countries. So this places the ancient Kerkenstad on the world map. At the same time it is the ultimate opportunity of the church to tell about the

Lord Jesus and the Gospel he gave to the world. Therefore the USRK organizes an Open-air service in the Nicolaaskerkhof on Saturday evening 4 July. We hope to hear a massed choir singing (in which you may take part), a children’s choir. A brass band and a street organ will accompany the singing of the worshippers. We hear readings from Holy Scripture in Danish, German, English and French. The address, however, will be heard in English. The service begins at 19.30 and will last for about an hour. And, of course, you are most welcome to join us in this mission to all people passing by. May the Lord keep them attracted to listen. One week before, Saturday 27 June, the USRK organizes Pilgrims’ tours along the churches that lay at or very nearby the cycle routes of 4 and 5 July. Over a dozen churches will be open to welcome pilgrims and tell them more about their mission and faith, their worship and time of services. There maybe an opportunity to light a candle, to say a prayer or find a quiet spot to meditate. So this is an excellent opportunity to meet other Christians in their churches. We at Holy Trinity are not the only congregation in town.A walking tour has been organized and begins at the Rehobothkerk at Briljantlaan 6. When you walk no too fast and take time to make a proper visit to each church the tour will keep you going (and praying) for about 4 to 5 hours. It follows the Tour de France route of the Saturday. Yes, and our church is open as well. Starting time between 10.30 and 14.00 in the Rehobothkerk. For those who like to cycle the USRK follows the Sunday route of the Tour de

France. Cyclist start between 10.30 and 14.00 in the St Gertrudiskerk at the Amaliadwarsstraat 2. More that 15 churches are open to welcome the pilgrims that come by bike. Here they find the same opportunities as those who walk. This tour may take the same time, but is much longer and finishes in Leidsche Rijn. Both events are not meant for large groups but are nice for families. They are great for individuals as well. You certainly will be

nourished, both spiritual as physical. For the latter thing some churches have refreshments available and you even can by a lunch. Finally the USRK is delighted that the number of member churches is growing. They and we all have received the commandment according to Matthew 28 verse 19.

operation between the six Christian student associations of Utrecht. Every year it runs completely on sponsoring and volunteers to generate a sum as large as possible for varying charitable goals. This year the goal is the Anglican Development Services of Mt. Kenya East. This local, Anglican NGO is working on market development for small scale farm-ers in Kenya.

My participation in the 2008 Happietaria Management was the reason I failed all my classes that semester, but it was totally worth it! In 2008 we raised € 30.000 for a deaf school in Liberia. Help the current Happietaria to surpass that number!Happietaria will be opened from March 12 till April 9 at Grebbeberglaan 5a, Utrecht.

For more information, the menu and reser-vations, see the website:

www.happietaria-utrecht.nlTour de FranceYou may have heard that the Tour de France will start in Utrecht this summer, on July 4 and 5 It is a great opportunity to give the expected 800,000 (!) visitors to Utrecht a view of what the city has to of-fer. Henk has mentioned above how the churches of Utrecht, assembled in the USRK, have organized three ecumenical events around the date: a cycling tour of churches of Utrecht near the route, a walk-ing tour ‘praying with your legs’, and an ecumenical open air service on July 4.Though Holy Trinity Church may be diffi-cult to reach that Sunday for regular mem-bers, we can expect far more visitors from outside the country. The church will hold the regular 9 o‘clock and 11 o’clock ser-vices and be especially open for visitors. The shared lunch that day will provide the opportunity to stay in the city till traffic has cleared a bit or to find a spot close to the cycling track! We are trying to think of creative ways we might reach out to these visitors as a church – please let me know if you have any ideas! More infor-mation will follow nearer to July.

Christian Education in April ______________________________________________________________________________________

EASTERTIDE Bible Studies leading to Pentecost

In April we return to our twice-monthly schedule. In our studies we continue with stories about women in the New Testament.

April 14 – Mary Magdalene as (first) witness of the risen Christ.

April 28 – the Samaritan women, with focus on the well of living water as reference to the Holy Spirit and Pentecost.

As in the previous months the approach will be – what can we learn from the life and acting of these women for:

our private life as Christians; as Holy Trinity community; as worldwide church on her way to

the Kingdom of God; for our service to the world?

We start each evening at 8pm. Coffee or tea is at 19.45, end time is 21.45.

Everybody is welcome! The studies are an opportunity also for Christian fellowship and to pray for one another. Let us have together, as Christians, as brothers and sisters in the Lord, a fruitful growth in being Christ’s Church!

Confirmation this Year in Holy Trinity Chaplaincy_______________________________________________________________________________________

We are planning a Confirmation for 2:30pm June 20, AD 2015!

Confirmation is derived from the Latin word confirmare, which means “to strengthen.” Confirmation includes a pub-lic profession of the faith which, for those baptised as in-fants, was confessed by parents and God-parents at baptism.  It is also a means of grace, a sacramental gift where the bishop prays while laying hands on each confir-mand that he or she may be confirmed or strengthened by the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Anglican Church administers confirm-ation in response to the example of the Apostles laying their hands on the disciples of Christ and praying for the gift of the Spirit (Acts 7.14-17) and the New Testa-ment teaching about the sealing or anoint-ing of the Holy Spirit (e.g. Heb. 6:2; Eph. 1:13,14; 2 Cor. 1:21).The gifts of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation mark that point in our Christian life when we are prepared to make for ourselves the solemn profession of faith and ‘other-centredness’ which others made for us at our baptism. Confirmation takes place with the “laying on of hands” by the Bishop. Confirmation

is traditionally thought to be the completion of the rite of Christian initiation. This year there are several candidates who have agreed to Confirmation preparation (without all finally committing to be confirmed). Could you please pray for these Christians as they deepen their life of faith:

The Rt Rev. Nicholas Reade, one of the Diocesan assistant retired bishops, has agreed to come for this confirmation. He and his wife Christine will join us for the weekend in Utrecht and to be with us for our Sunday worship as well. He has asked for the candidates names so that he can begin to pray for them. If you know of anyone else who might be interested in being confirmed, please ask them to contact the Chaplain.

Door de stilte heen… A poem by Ella Schoonhoven______________________________________________________________________________________

Ella wrote and translated this poem recently for this time of year. She says the word silence appealed to her. She notes that a theme in Dutch Protestant churches is “door de stilte heen…”.

A word of farewell from William Jensen_______________________________________________________________________________________

This is a time of reflection as my wife and I prepare to move to the United States. For me it’s a return after more than 25 years. For my wife, who is South African, this will be a whole new experience! It

has been our desire to make the move for a number of years, however with two teenagers it made sense to remain here for their academic and social continuity. In a few weeks (depending on a couple of logistical issues) we will be departing for Minneapolis, Minnesota (yes, very cold winters!), where my wife has been relocated with her employer. Believe me, Minneapolis wasn’t on my bucket list, but the Lord is taking us there for a reason. Even though I am looking forward to the move, it brings many changes, undoubtedly more than I am even aware of as I write this. Like many in our church congregation, The Netherlands has been home for many years. My children were born and raised here, we’ve made many friends along the way, and of course the countless life experiences wonderful memories. For me, Holy Trinity Church is

one of those. What a distinctive and amazing congregation we have here! Far from homogenous, Holy Trinity is so special because of its unique collection of different Christian backgrounds and cultures. It is a place where both Anglicans and non-Anglicans come together to worship the Lord, to celebrate His love, grace and forgiveness. Raised as a Baptist, many of the elements of the Anglican Church service were foreign to me. Upon reflection, I have come to understand and appreciate them, and I am very grateful and thankful indeed that God brought me to Holy Trinity. I feel the Lord calling me and moving me to serve Him in a new and closer way. He has not yet revealed in what capacity but am certain He will do that in His time. I humbly request your prayers as the Lord guides me. I also ask you to remember my family in your prayers. In closing, thank you Christian friends, a special thank you to Father David for your guidance, your witness and your love of the Lord. In Christ, William Jansen
