Diffusion & Osmosis With Synthetic CellsAim: To find out the amount of osmosis and diffusion occurring over two days.

Apparatus/Materials: Sucrose solution Water 6 Beakers Starch Solution Onion Iodine Salt solution 4 Dialysis tubing Electronic scales Retort stand Bosshead and clamp 8 rubber bands

Method:For cells submerged

1. Close 1 end of dialysis tubing with a rubber band.2. Half fill dialysis tubing with chosen solution3. Close off other end of dialysis tubing with another rubber band.4. Weigh complete cell and record it.5. Fill beaker with chosen solution.6. Submerge complete cell in chosen solution and leave for 2 days.7. After 2 days take out cell, dry it and weigh it.

For Onion1. Cut onion in half2. Choose solution either salt or sucrose and submerge half of the

onion into it.3. Leave for 2 days4. After 2 days return and check effects on onion.

For Thistle Funnel1. Set up Retort Stand and Bosshead and clamp with normal

procedure.2. Close 1 end of dialysis tubing with a rubber band.3. Slide dialysis tubing onto Thistle FUnnel
