want to fill that person’s bucket?

Page 8: file · Web viewCompassion – Bucket Filling. April Lesson #1 Compassion. Olweus Connection: Identifying and building key qualities of a healthy classroom community

I do not have any food at home so I am always happy to come to school to get breakfast and lunch.

My dad lost his job last week.

My mom is really sick and has been in the hospital for two weeks.

My parents just told me we are moving to a different state.

I have worn the same clothes for two days. I hope no one notices.

My parents argued last night and my dad said he was leaving.

I have to go home and take care of my siblings because my parents are at work. I am being bullied by another student at school but I am afraid to tell an adult because the other person said they would hurt me if I told. I had to go live with my grandmother because my parents could not take care of me.

I want to play football but my parents said they don’t have time to take me to practices or games.

I want to be friends with these girls at school but they keep laughing at me and telling me to go away.

I am so stressed out about the STAAR test that I am having trouble sleeping at night.

Page 9: file · Web viewCompassion – Bucket Filling. April Lesson #1 Compassion. Olweus Connection: Identifying and building key qualities of a healthy classroom community

I feel very sad and lonely all the time and I don’t know why.

My dad does not come home at night and I don’t know why.

I can’t have a birthday party because my family does not have the money for one.

I don’t have anyone to help me with my homework when I get home.

My grades are getting worse at school and my parents don’t even notice and don’t ask why. My parents always say that I am their lazy child. I wish they would stop saying this to their friends because it really bothers me. I don’t want to be “more like my brother”, I want to be me. Why can’t my parents understand that?

My teacher doesn’t even know how to spell my name correctly.

I am not good at math and that is why I always want to leave class to go to the bathroom or the nurse’s office.

There is a student in my homeroom class who has been making inappropriate comments about me to other kids.

Sometimes I go to bed hungry because we don’t have food at home.

I don’t like the way I look.

Page 14: file · Web viewCompassion – Bucket Filling. April Lesson #1 Compassion. Olweus Connection: Identifying and building key qualities of a healthy classroom community

A teenage neighbor is responsible for you while your parents go to a movie. Your teenage neighbor wears a hearing aid because he is partially deaf. Tonight, he tells you his hearing aid isn't working very well. The telephone rings, but your neighbor doesn't hear it, so your parents' answering machine takes a message. When your neighbor isn't watching, you play the message back. The message is from your parents. They had forgotten to tell your neighbor your bedtime. You realize you can get away with staying up later. When your parents find out, they'll blame your neighbor for not getting the message.

Ask students to answer the following questions in writing:o What thoughts go through your head? o What do you do?

Collect their responses and read over them. Prepare and facilitate a discussion the following week on

compassion based on their responses.
