5th GRADE UNIT 8

Common Core Standards:

5.NF.2 Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result: 2/5 + ½ = 3/7 by observing that 3/7 < ½.

5.NF.4a Interpret the product (a/b) x q as a parts of a partition or q into b equal parts; equivalently, as the result of a sequence of operations a x q ÷ b. For example, use a visual fraction model to show (2/3) x 4 = 8/3, and create a story context for this equation. Do the same with (2/3) x (4/15) = 8/15. (In general, (a/b) x (c/d) = ac/bd.)

5.NF.4b Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by tiling it with unit squares of the appropriate unit fraction side lengths, and show that the area is same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. Multiply fractional side lengths to find areas of rectangles, and represent fraction products as rectangular areas.

5.NF.6 Solve real world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.

5.NF.7* Apply and extend previous understanding of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.

ENGAGEMENT May 10-13, 2016 NF.1/2 Fractions

When would you need to add fractions or mixed numbers with unlike denominators? (in real life, not Baden School life)

GROUP QUESTION:

Simon had one and one-third cat nip bars. He promised Carter that he would give him ¾ of a catnip bar. What is a good estimate of the amount of catnip bar that Simon will have left after he gives it to Carter? What is the actual amount?

EXIT SLIP:

Carter thought the bar was gross and gave half of his amount to Thor (who pretty much will eat anything including rocks and dryer lint, true statement). How much did Carter to Thor?

ENGAGEMENT May 16-18, 2016 5.NF. 3 Division of Fractions

Are fractions always part of division?

GROUP QUESTION

Write whether the statement below is true or false. Explain your answer using words and numbers. The product of 2/5 and 7 is greater than 7.

EXIT SLIP

What is the area of a carpet that is 4 meters long and 10/4 meters wide? Fill in the grid to represent this.

ENGAGEMENT May 19-23, 2016 5.NF.4 Multiplying/Dividing Fractions

When would you divide a fraction into more fractions? Why? (In real life)

GROUP QUESTION

Thor used one fifth of a bag of flour to make dog bones. If he used 3 cups of flour, how many cups were in the bag to start? Explain your answer by drawing a model.

EXIT SLIP

The fuel gauge on Carter’s motorcycle read that he had ¾ of a tank of gas. After a trip to the beach and back, he used 4/5 of the gas. Which equation shows the fractional amount of gas he has after his trip to the beach?

A. ¾ ÷ 1/5 = 15/4B. ¾ x 4/5 = 3/5 C. 1/5 x ¾ = 3/20D. 1/5 ÷ ¾ = 3/20

ENGAGEMENT May 24-26, 2016 5.NF.5a Compare Fractions by Estimation

When have you multiplied fractions (not in school!) in real life?

GROUP QUESTION:

Thor lives in a room that is 20 feet wide and 15 feet long. Simon lives in a room that is a fourth as wide, but has the same length. (Seems unfair but Simon is a cat after all, how much space does he really need anyway?) How do the dimensions and area of Thor’s room compare to Simon’s room? Draw a picture to prove your answer.

EXIT SLIP:

Select two correct statements and SHOW ALL calculations!

A. The product of 6/7 and 6 is greater than 6B. The product of 6/7 and 6 is less than 6/7C. The product of 3 ½ and 4 is greater than 3 ½ D. The product of 15/6 and 7/4 is greater than 15/6E. The product of 15/6 and 7/4 is less than 7/4

ENGAGEMENT May 27-31, 2016 5.NF. 6 Multiply Mixed Numbers

When would we use mixed numbers to multiply in real life and WHY?

GROUP QUESTION:

There are 3 ½ bus loads of students standing in the parking lot. The students are getting ready to go to Hard Bargain farm. 3/5 of the students on each bus are girls. How many busses would it take to carry only the girls? (Draw a model)

EXIT SLIP:

Thor was reading a book on peaceful living. It took him 5/6 of an hour to read it. Carter read the same book in ¾ the time it took Thor to read it. How long did it take Carter to finish the book?

ENGAGEMENT JUNE 1-3, 2016 5.NF.7a Fractions and Division

What profession divides fractions of fractions? (not a math teacher or professor either)

GROUP QUESTION

After running, the dogs go inside for lunch. Thor brings 6 boxes of dog bones to split equally between himself and 16 of his running mates. What fraction represents the amount of dog bones each doggie receives?

EXIT SLIP

Each box above contains 18 dog bones. Doggies are predicting the number of bones each will get. Carter said that each of them would have at least 6 dog bones. Do you agree with him? Why or why not? Show equations and EXPLAIN them.

HOMEWORK 5. NF. 2 May 10, 2016 (SMP: MP 4, MP 7)

GREEN, RED, BLUE

Little Pay Pay and Little Milayah are completing a project for their fashion show they are putting together. They need 1 ½ meters of super cute ribbon to accent a dress. They take the metro to Georgetown (you know the fashion district…) and browse the shops. Little Pay Pay finds the perfect ribbon. She grabs 7/10 of a meter. Little Milayah finds her version of the perfect ribbon but grabs 1/3 meters of it. They decide to quickly estimate in the store. Will they have enough? How do you know? (Draw pictures) How much will they have left over? Or how much more will they need? Why? (USE WORDS TO EXPLAIN)

RED, BLUE

Little Pay Pay decides they should actually find the total instead of estimating. What is the actual total? What happens to the total when Little Pay Pay grabs another ¼ of ribbon?

BLUE:

Little Delany followed them to Georgetown and decided to play games with them. While they weren’t looking, she grabbed the pile of ribbon, cut off 5/6 of Little Milayah’s NEW total, and she glued another 1/3 ribbon to Little Milayah’s ribbon. What is the new total? Will they have enough for their dress?

HOMEWORK 5. NF. 2 May 11, 2016 (SMP: MP 4, MP 7)

GREEN, RED, BLUE

Little Amman decides to help out the girls. She takes a call from a client and rushes to Georgetown to get more ribbon. She decides that she should get more rather than less. She selects ribbon that is 4 2/3 yards. She brings it home and Rosie Bud is sewing the dress. After she finishes, she has 2 ¾ yards remaining. How much ribbon did Rosie Bud use?

RED, BLUE

Little Zakiya simply LOVES the ribbon that Little Amman bought. So Little Zakiya sneaks in a snatches it when the girls took a break to feed Carter a pickle. Little Jaiden is in cohoots with Little Zakiya and they decide to make an infinity scarf with the ribbon. Will the girls have enough if they need 3 ½ yards? If so, how much will remain? If not, how much more do they need?

BLUE

Little Markie and Little Pierce don’t care one bit about scarves, but they do want to make a jacket for their Smurfs when they go on world tour to Bulgaria. If there are 25 Smurfs that need jackets, and the jackets must use 1/16 of a yard of fabric, will there be enough for their Smurfs if they sneak into the place and steal the ribbon? (Use the left over amount from the first problem) If not, how much more will they need? If so, how much will be remaining and how many more Smurfs can be outfitted with jackets?

HOMEWORK MAY 12-13, 2016 Due MAY 16, 2016. NF. 1

GREEN, RED, BLUE (ALL GROUPS DO ALL PARTS!)

Simon and Holly want to visit the Catnip Hall of Fame (they are after all cats). The Hall of fame is located in Myrtle Beach, SC. Since holly hates the bus, and Simon hates planes, they decide to drive (Don’t ask how, cats are savvy….). They are leaving their house with a full tank of gas. The chart below shows much gas they will use along the way.

Starting Point Destination Miles Amount of Gas UsedHuntingtown, MD Rocky Mount, NC 195 miles 4/10Rocky Mount, NC Wilmington, NC 116 2/5Wilmington, NC Myrtle Beach, SC 57 1/3

Part A:

How much gas will Holly and Simon have in the tank when he arrives in Rocky Mount, NC? EXPLAIN with equations AND SENTENCES!!! (It should be a paragraph)

Part B:

How much gas did they use to arrive at the Catnip Hall of Fame? EXPLAIN by using equations and SENTENCES! (it should be a paragraph)

Part C:

EXPLAIN the difference in solving parts A and B. In your explanation use numerical equations, mathematical vocabulary, and strategies. (This should definitely a paragraph)

HOMEWORK MAY 16, 2016 5.NF.3 FRACTIONS

GREEN, RED, BLUE

Little Teacora bought a lemon and chocolate cake for Happy Flag Day. The cakes are the same size and shape. The lemon cake was cut into 12 equal pieces. The chocolate cake was cut into 3 equal pieces.

-If Little Teacora ate 4 pieces of lemon cake and 2 pieces of chocolate cake, what total amount of cake did Little Teacora eat? Use a visual fraction model and an equation to justify your answer. EXPLAIN USING SENTENCES

RED, BLUE

Little Travis thought that cake sounded delightful, so he went to Giant to buy Red Velvet Cake (super yum!!!). There was a sale so he bought Red Velvet Cake and Coconut Cake. When he got home he put them on the counter. Little Brandon Haynes came over and brought his dog Rufus. When the boys went to go play XBOX 1, Rufus jumped up and ate 1/6 of the Red Velvet cake and 3/8 of the Coconut cake. How much is left over of EACH cake? How much is left over then ALTOGETHER?

BLUE

Little Sunshine thought this dog jumping up and eating cake was straight up nonsense! So she marched herself over there, brought Little Chura, the cat whisperer, with her and demanded that they hand over Rufus for training! Meanwhile, Little Chura’s cat climbed up on the counter and knocked off another fourth of the Red velvet cake and third of the Coconut cake. What’s left over now? Little Chura called Little Pinky who ran over and tried to smash ½ of a carrot cake into the coconut cake so hopefully no one would notice. Now how much cake do they have ALTOGETHER?

HOMEWORK MAY 17, 2016 5.NF.3 FRACTIONS

GREEN, RED, BLUE

Remember: Little Teacora bought a lemon and chocolate cake. The cakes are the same size and shape. The lemon cake was cut into 12 equal pieces. The chocolate cake was cut into 3 equal pieces. Redraw these models here and LABEL them!

Now solve:

The next week, Little Nevaeh’s grandmother made her a strawberry cake, the same size and shape as the lemon and chocolate cake that Little Teacora had bought. Little Nevaeh ate two fourths of the strawberry cake. Did she eat more strawberry or chocolate cake? Explain your answer using numbers and SENTENCES.

RED, BLUE

Little Jaiden decided that she should go into this cake making business so she could raise money to show her prize Chinchillas. She needed to sell cakes at the county yard sale. Little LG decided he would help her make a HUGE sheet cake. If the cake was 24 inches by 2 ½ feet, what is the area of EACH of the pieces she will sell, IF she cuts each piece into a 2x2 inch squared size?

BLUE

Little Diana LOVES math! She suggested that Little Jaiden cut the pieces into 3 x 3 inch squared pieces. If the smaller cake pieces are sold for $2.75 a piece and the larger cake pieces are sold for $3.25 a piece, which will produce more money? What is the difference?

RED, BLUE

Little Markel decided that he would LOVE to eat the remainder of the mac-n-cheese because he had Brussel sprouts for dinner. So he stepped on Little Daniel Gooding’s back to hoist himself in the window. Little Gooding thought it would be hilarious to run away and hide in the bushes to record Little Markel trying to climb out the window with a pan of mac-n-cheese. He plans to make his own Vine. Little Markel fell half out the window and 1/3 of the pan of the remaining mac-n-cheese hit the ground. Now how much is left?

BLUE

Little Jenny felt bad for Little Markel and took her own 1/8 of her family’s pan of mac-n-cheese and added to the remaining mac-n-cheese. But as she was delivering it to Little Markel, Little Chura’s cat rubbed against Little Jenny’s legs and she tripped and lost 2/3 of her 1/8 of the mac-n-cheese. How much mac-n-cheese is there now ALTOGETHER?

HOMEWORK MAY 19, 2016 5.NF.4

GREEN, RED, BLUE:

1.What is the product of ½ AND ¼ ? 2.Draw a model to represent it. 3.Now multiply by 2 and ¼. What is the product? 4.Draw another model. 5.Little Faith wanted to make a label for her horse’s scrapbook. The label was 8/15 foot wide and 7/8 foot long. What is the area of the label?

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

RED, BLUE

Little Isaiah got mad and scribbled on the first model above. But he only got half way through scribbling on the ½ when Little Diamond snatched the crayon from his hand. What is the product now?

BLUE:

Little Nicolas thought he’d be super funny and he cut the model of 2 wholes into 24 pieces. Then he threw away ¾ of those pieces. When Little Micah came back he demanded Nicolas get those pieces back!!!! Little Nicolas dug through the trash (yuck) but could only find ½ of those ¾ pieces he tossed. How many did he actually find? What if he found the product of what he found and ¼? What is that answer?

HOMEWORK MAY 20, 2016 5.NF.4

GREEN, RED, BLUE

Little Jalen wants to make flan, her favorite dessert. She uses 1 ¾ cups of milk to make 1 flan. What is the total amount of milk Little Jalen needs to make 8 flans? (She loves them!) What if she wants to make 16 flans? 25 flans?

1. 2. 3.

RED, BLUE

Little DJ got distracted by the shiny lights and dumped three times as much milk into the first flan. OOPs! How much did she pour in? What about dumping in three times as much sugar if it is 2/3 cup for one flan?

BLUE:

Little Nathan was irritated by the mistake, he takes cooking seriously. He decided to multiply every ingredient by 3. But now, how does that affect his ability to make 8 flans? He has three times as much milk now for the first one, what should he multiply that by now to make 8 flans? Why? What about sugar? How much total sugar for 8 flans? What if he wants to make 11 flans? How much sugar and milk?

HOMEWORK MAY 23, 2016 5.NF.4 MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION OF FRACTIONS

GREEN, RED, BLUE

Two students, Little CC and Little Brenda, created posters for Thor and Carter running for the Presidential election. Little CC and Little Brenda created a square shaped poster. The length and width of her poster is 3 ½ feet each.

Use the grid below to draw and shade Little CC and Little Brenda’s poster.

1 square foot

What is the area? EXPLAIN

RED, BLUE:

Little Douglas was in a mood and drew a mustache on Little CC’s poster of her face with Thor and Carter. Little Brenda kirked out and cut the poster in thirds. What is the area now?

BLUE:

Little Richard thought that antic was HILARIOUS so he decided he would put the third of CC’s poster back and draw a beard instead. But he was laughing too hard and replaced only a 1/3 of the third. What is the area now?

HOMEWORK MAY 24, 2016 5.NF.5

Little Bryan’s family got a pan of lasagna for dinner. Little Bryan and his father shared equally one-fourth of the lasagna and left the remainder for his mother and five brothers to share equally.

Draw a model to represent the amount of lasagna Little Bryan and his father shared.

RED, BLUE:

Little Rocco LOVED lasagna, but his father never made it. So he snuck into Little Bryan’s house and grabbed 1 ½ pieces of the remaining lasagna. Now how much lasagna is gone? Draw a model.

BLUE:

As Little Rocco was climbing out of the window, Little Malik caught Little Rocco red handed and made him put the lasagna back. But Little Rocco stumbled on Jerry the boot and dropped half of the 1 ½ pieces that he stole (some got on Jerry! Oh no!). So he put back the remainder he had left. Now how much is left? Draw a model.

HOMEWORK MAY 25, 2016

GREEN, RED, BLUE

Yesterday, before Little Rocco grabbed Little Bryan’s lasagna, Little Bryan’s family had a pan of lasagna for dinner. Little Bryan and his father shared equally one-fourth of the lasagna and left the rest for his mother and five brothers to share equally. SOOOO,

1. What fraction represents the portion of lasagna that Little Bryan’s mother ate?

2. Little Bryan said that he received less lasagna than his mother. Do you agree? Why or why not? EXPLAIN IN SENTENCES!!!!!

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

RED, BLUE:

Thor felt bad that Little Rocco wanted lasagna enough that he would grab some. So Thor cooked some and divided it amongst him, Little Rocco, and six others. He let Little Rocco have 2 pieces. Little Rocco ate another ½ piece when no one was looking. Carter snatched another 2 ¼. How much is left now?

BLUE:

Carter felt like Little Rocco must LOVE lasagna or is really hungry. So Carter signed Little Rocco up for lasagna of the month club. The first shipment came with only 5/6 of the lasagna present. Carter complained and they sent him a new lasagna but only 11/12 of the pan was present. If Carter combines them, how much lasagna does he have now? Too bad Rufus jumped up and ate 2/3 of the entire shipment. Now how much does he have left?

Write whether the statement below is true or false. EXPLAIN(!!!!) Your answer using words and numbers.

Little Elias says that the product of 4/5 and 7 is greater than 7. (First show the work. Then show a model. Then explain using fractions and compare to whole numbers. Use the words portion or piece to help explain).

The length and width of her poster is 4 ½ feet each.

Which operation could you perform to find the area of this poster? AND SOLVE IT!

4 ½ x 4

4 ½ x 4 ½

4 ½ / 4 ½

4 ½ x 2

What would the equation change to if the length and width had 1 foot cut off on each side?

RED, BLUE:

Simon wants to find out if changing the denominator will make a difference in creating a product that is bigger than 6. He experiments using donuts and breaking them into pieces. Show a model using donuts and change the fraction from 4/5 to a different fraction.

BLUE:

Little Rico loves donuts, especially the ones with the chocolate coating. So when Simon turned around, he shoved three pieces in his mouth and ran away. Show this as a model. So then Thor felt bad that Simon was crying. He got on his PUG bike and went to Krispy Kreme and purchased 5 donuts. Use these whole donuts in your model and find this product and 8. Is it now bigger than 8? Why?

Thor needs to cover a small storage room floor with carpet. He says his feet get cold when he goes in to get his Scooby snacks. The storage room is 3 meters long and 7/2 meters wide.

Calculate and show on the grid.

Simon was wrapping a gift with a ribbon for a birthday party (because cats have birthdays too). He measured the ribbon and found that he had three and two-thirds yards of ribbon. After finishing he had 1 ¾ yards of ribbon remaining. How much did he use?

RED, BLUE

Little Daniel H needs to cover a window with a shade. The window is 9 meters long and one-third of a meter wide. How much shade does Little Daniel H need to cover the window? Use the grid below to show your work.

Little Brandon Hairston becomes an interior decorator and asks Little Pinky to help him decorate Carter and Thor’s new bedroom. Thor decides he wants smaller windows because he is afraid of Simon looking in his bedroom window. Thor wants the window to be half as long as the original but the same width. What size shade should they make now?

BLUE

Little Sunshine and Little Chura will make the shades for Thor and Carter’s new bedroom. There are three windows of this new size. How much material do they need? Little Malik trips on Jerry and puts a saw through the wall. They decide to make a new window that is only two-thirds as big (to use the hole). How much material do they need now?

After recess, some students go inside for lunch. Little Diamond brings 5 boxes of granola bars to split equally between herself and 15 of her classmates.

Little CC saw Little Richard eat the granola bars. So she goes out and buys boxes so that the 5 boxes have 20 bars in each box. Students were predicting the number of granola bars each of them will receive, and one of them said that he or she would have at least 5 granola bars (get ready for some fiber!). Do you agree with this statement (about the 5 bars not the fiber), why or why not? Use mathematical thinking to defend your answer.

RED, BLUE

Little Diana did a cartwheel, spun out of control and knocked over 2 boxes of granola bars. 2/3 of the bars fell out and down the storm drain. How many are left and how many will each student get now?

BLUE

Little Pierce and Little Markie ran to 7-11 bought an orange Fanta and a taquito to split. While they were there, they picked up some zebra cakes to replace the lost granola bars. The only problem is that each box has 6 zebra cakes and they could only buy 3 boxes. Then Little Markie’s grandfather ate one zebra cake. How many treats will each student get now?
