The teacher may be able to arrange for the children to read the story themselves at home and provide the team with a short-written piece of feedback each, as a piece of homework. One idea for a community project, which would aim to create a story book, or several story books, for a local school: specifically, a chosen class or year group.

To start with, you would need to identify a local school and communicate with the senior leadership team to identify the class who would benefit from the project. The team would need to know the ages and year group of the students they will be creating the book/s for.

The team must research average costings of getting a book printed, even in a basic paper & staples form, and whether they want to create an online version too which can be accessed from anywhere. They will need to consider the budget (raised in the fundraising unit), and what level of product they can produce for X amount of students, on that budget.

Next will come research relating to the target group; the curriculum, interests, themes or topics they are doing at school. Then the team can decide what to base the story on and begin to draft it up. They may split into a writing group and an illustration group or divide the tasks up in the group depending on their strengths and interests.

You can arrange a formal “handover” to the business in line with social distancing & COVID guidelines, which may include a video call in to the classroom to read the story to the children for the first time (this may enhance the team’s sense of achievement). The teacher may be able to arrange for the children to read the story themselves at home and provide the team with a short-written piece of feedback each, as a piece of homework. You could also arrange press coverage of the project, and share it to your social media platforms & via email to agencies you work with (which may increase future engagement with project opportunities, team challenge, work placements and recruitment).

One idea for a community project, which would aim to create an Exercise for Health guide & video, aimed to a chosen target audience (e.g. children, elderly, wheelchair users, nurses, COPD sufferers, etc).

To start with, you would need to identify an age category and discuss the needs of that category, the relevance of “Exercise for Health” to that group and research the science, safety & studies that back up why exercising is important for their health.

The team can begin to design a visual aid (e.g. a booklet) with all the information they have generated in. They may want to include links to local resources & businesses which can help long term, facts & statistics, nutritional information (e.g. Eat Well Guidelines) and a written guide to exercising for health

You will then look to create, edit & mass produce an exercise video based on all your research and findings, relevant & engaging to the target audience, and most importantly safe in its delivery. This is where you will look to enlist the support of a company or individual who can help you devise the routine, who is qualified to deliver this advice. This could be a local Gym, Group Exercise Instructor or Personal Trainer.

Alongside this, in their home working days, the students can produce a sample 7 day menu relevant to the target audience, which demonstrates a balanced diet in line with the Eat Well Principles, and can be distributed with the video. This will require planning, research and presentation skills.

You can arrange a formal “handover” to the business in line with social distancing & COVID guidelines, which may include a live stream to a venue which hosts the target audience (e.g. a local school or care home) where you introduce the video and do a session with the group directly (this may enhance the teams sense of achievement). You could also arrange press coverage of the project, and share it to your social media platforms & via email to agencies you work with (which may increase future engagement with project opportunities, team challenge, work placements and recruitment). Mass producing the videos/booklets etc will be a good way to engage with and reach even more people, enhancing the community benefit of the project.

One idea for a community project, which would support elderly residents of a local care home, is to create family photo books or life story books, for the residents. Another method may be to go down the “research their family history/family tree” route.

To start with, you would need to identify a local care home which you could work with for this community project, and arrange for photos, information and video calls with the residents to gather what you need to create the books. These would need to be handled with care and respect, as no loss of personal photos etc would be accepted. This may be a more sensitive project only considered with a group you trust & have the right level of integrity to see this project through.

One to one video calls, ideally one student to one elderly resident, would need to take place early in the planning and collection of resources from the home would need to be arranged in a safe and COVID friendly way.

The team would need to plan the resources they will need, and the costings, in line with their budget (from fundraising) and purchase all the materials. There should also be consideration of the needs of the elderly (including any individual resident needs) in the production of the book, e.g. colour requirements, bigger bolder writing, etc).

This project will involve extensive communication via virtual means, patience in community with the target group, respect for the individuals & their belongings as well as creativity in the approach & production of the books.

The team would aim to produce one book/album per resident, per student, e.g. 14 total. These can then be delivered to the care home by the Team Leader, and a video call arranged for the residents to receive them and look through them (this may enhance the team’s sense of achievement). You could also arrange press coverage of the project, and share it to your social media platforms & via email to agencies you work with (which may increase future engagement with project opportunities, team challenge, work placements and recruitment).

Co-vid Community Project Ideas

One idea for a community project, which would aim to support the homeless community and/or individuals or families in poverty, is based around “food parcels.”

To start with, you would need to identify a local charity, food bank or business to work with to research, promote and distribute the food parcels. A food parcel should be enough for 1 person to 7 days.

The team must research average costings of a food parcel for 1 person, and the sorts of products which usually go into these food parcels. Once this is obtained, you will know how many food parcels you can create in line with your budget (funds raised in the “fundraising” part of the programme).

Next comes the final decisions on what will go into the parcels; think about nutrition but also practicality and storage etc. This will involve research of costings, comparing brands, working to a budget and considering the basic eat well principles.

The team must then shop for and produce X amount of food parcels, in individual bags, to distribute.

Alongside this, in their home working days, the students can produce a sample 7 day menu to go with the food parcels, which demonstrates how the contents can be used to make enough meals for 1 person, 3 meals a day, for 7 days. This will involve a great deal of thinking, planning and also presentation skills for the final menu.

You can arrange a formal “handover” to the business in line with social distancing & COVID guidelines, which may include a video call in to witness people receiving their food parcels from the business directly (this may enhance the teams sense of achievement). You could also arrange press coverage of the project, and share it to your social media platforms & via email to agencies you work with (which may increase future engagement with project opportunities, team challenge, work placements and recruitment).
