WORLD WAR I ALLIANCES GAME Background: It is 1914. The fog of war covers Europe. Decades of nationalism, militarism, and toxic competition for colonies have reached a boiling point. Today you will be taking control of one of the great nations of Europe and guide them into WAR. Unlike the Congress of Vienna, the only way to reshape the map of Europe is through conquest; you will be destroying the Balance of Power you helped to create during the Congress of Vienna, but to do so you must make alliances. If you have ever played Risk, you will do well in this simulation. Good luck, 6 Nations: Great Britain (United Kingdom) Italy Russia Germany France Austria-Hungary

WORLD WAR I ALLIANCES GAME

Background: It is 1914. Good luck,

6 Nations: Great Britain (United Kingdom) ItalyRussiaGermanyFranceAustria-Hungary

Homework: Read your country/empire's profile and plan who you would want to become allies with, who your enemies are, and a strategy for winning the game.

Game Itself: There are 4 rounds of 5 minutes each. The first round is alliance building only, NO INVASIONS ALLOWED IN THE FIRST ROUND. There are 1-minute intermissions between each round to discuss with your team. The

1) Make Alliances-all alliances are SECRET. You must give a diplomatic note to the teacher clearly stating the alliance being formed and it must be signed by at least 1 member of each nation. YOU CAN ONLY BE ALLIES WITH TWO OTHER COUNTRIES, NO MORE. The alliances are secret and you will not know exactly who is allied with whom. Alliances CAN be broken but the other nations must be informed. The first round is for alliance making ONLY. No war can be declared until the second round.

NOTE: If you are in an alliance with another nation, then you are agreeing to help defend that nation as well as assist them in any war they might declare.

2) If no one wins, everyone loses. YOU MUST ATTACK AND CONQUER THE WHOLE MAP. Eventually, you must turn on your allies to win, assuming you survive.

3) Declaring War and how combat works: First, you must declare war by handing the teacher a slip of paper making this declaration, then attack the country. If you have numerical superiority both in terms of the army and navy, then you win.

NOTE: You do NOT have to border the nation to invade that nation.

For example, if Germany attacks Great Britain, they will win the land battle (5 to 1 advantage) but lose the battle at sea (5 to 8 disadvantage). Therefore, it is a stalemate and no one wins. BUT, if Germany can form an alliance with another nation to assist them and add to their naval strength (fleets), then they can successfully attack and defeat Great Britain.

NOTE: Whoever BEGINS the attack takes the country AND half of their armed forces.

If Germany conquers Great Britain, with the help of another nation, Germany gets half of Great Britain's forces. Thus, Germany will now have 5.5 million men, and 9 fleets. Make sense?

Germany 5 million men 5 fleetsGreat Britain 1 million men 8 fleets

CHART OF ARMED FORCES

NOTE: Some countries are weaker than other, and therefore it is much more important to make alliances with stronger nations to ensure their survival. Again, you can only successfully invade a

country by defeating both its army AND navy.

The winner of the will receive bonus points on homework as well as bragging rights.

Remember, this is war. Lie, backstab, do whatever you must do to win. The ends justify the means. Your survival as a nation depends on your skill and strategy.

GOOD LUCK, and again, IF NO ONE WINS, EVERYONE LOSES.
