ENGLISH

Format of the exam:1 hour reading and writing exam. The task will be to analyse

and compare two pieces of text then write a letter using information

from the text.

Topics that need to be revised:

Analysing the characters in the text.

Comparing two texts.

How specific words/phrases/stage directions and punctuation show feelings.

How to organise and structure a letter.

Hints and tips for preparation:

Practise picking out key information from a text. Practice explaining the effect on the audience. Try using a grid to identify words and effect

Mathematics

Format of the exam: One paper. Students will complete all of the questions that they possibly can. The paper is 60 minutes in length and has a maximum score of 60. One mark questions should take no longer than one minute to answer. It will be a non-calculator paper.

Topics that need to be revised: The paper will cover all of the four Maths strands; Number, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics. As a rough guide the following topics should certainly be looked at.

Remembering/Understanding – Written addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Reading two way tables. Pictograms. Area by counting squares. Names of angles. Factors and multiples. Calculating with decimals. Probability spinners. Percentages of amounts.

Hints and tips for preparation:

Make sure you have looked at every topic and not just your favourites Revise a little and often. Rather than two hours the night before the exam

pick a topic and spend 30mins looking through revision material every other night

Make revision active – reading things will only help a little bit; make sure you give yourself time to do and understand examples

Format of the exam: There will be one compulsory question worth 25 marks on the topic of

‘Coasts’. There will be 3 additional marks for SPaG. (Spelling, punctuation and grammar).

Topics that need to be revised:

Coasts

How humans use the coastline.

Types of erosion –abrasion, hydraulic action, solution and attrition.

Features of erosion- caves, arch, stack and stumps. Bays and headlands.

Longshore drift.

Coastal defences – groynes, sea wall, revetments, gabion basket, rip rap and beach replenishment.

Write a revision time table and plan when you are going to complete your revision. You have a lot to revise.

Ethics

Format of the exam:The exam is based on the GCSE format. Students will sit the Edexcel Ethics GCSE in Year 11, but will be familiar with the style of questions and expected answer style. Students have completed many assessments using this format of a, b, c and d style questions. The exam is 45 minutes long, and comprises of two sets of questions. Students must attempt all questions. There is 5 minutes built in time to thoroughly read the questions. There is a useful PowerPoint on the VLC with the revision materials to further remind and explain how to give A* answers.Topics that need to be revised:

The exam will be based on the five areas studied in class.

1. The United Nations2. Afghanistan as a country3. The 30 Human Rights4. Christian and Hindu Creation Stories5. Scientific explanations for the creation of the universe.

In addition students will need to know the 12 x Human Rights keywords – both meanings and spellings. You can find these on Quizlet.com -PCSA Yr8 Spellings.

Hints and tips for preparation:

All revision materials are available on the VLC. There are also links to Quizlet.com which is a very useful resource for learning key terms and spellings. Come to the Year 8 Ethics after school revision session on Monday 16th November. Take home the mind-maps and revision cards that will be prepared in lessons.

Stretch and challenge for top grades:

To get top grades you need to be aware of exam format, have thoroughly revised the prescribed topics and to make sure you write in enough detail giving examples and key terms wherever possible.

Hints and tips for preparation: You will need to learn your writing paragraph by heart once your draft copy has been marked and corrected in class by your teacher, who will have given you useful feedback on how to improve the quality and level of your work. For the speaking assessment you need to rehearse as much as possible as this will improve your confidence. Stretch and challenge for top grades: To achieve the top grades you must incorporate either two (evaluating) or three tenses (creating) in all the skills assessed.
