As I write this article, we are less than one week away from Christmas. I know that with the approaching holiday, the season gets quite hectic. We should all however, take a breather and contemplate the reason for the season – the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Let us not forget the gift of this season and try to bring the holiness of the season into our celebration of the merriment of the

holiday. On behalf of all the officers and directors of your council, I offer you a joyous and holy Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

Along with all the shopping and parties taking place this past month, the Council has been busy as well. On December 7, we had a wonderful and fun Christmas party hosted by our Chancellor Brother Ralph Maggio at the Magnolia Greens event center. Seventy five people, brothers, spouses, and widows of deceased brothers attended the evening. Food and drink was enjoyed by all and the Christmas caroling was a lot of fun. Many thanks go out to Ralph and his helpers, Rich and Susan Boccard and Jim and Patty Cavanaugh.

On Wednesday, December 19th Brothers Lou Mattes, Rich Boccard, Bob Macaluso and myself presented a check in the amount of $14,000.00 to Tiffany Leslie head of Special Olympics. The gift was made possible due to the tremendous success of the golf outing and our partnership with LAMB. Special thanks go out to Worthy Brothers SK Lou Mattes who chaired the golf tournament and to SK Jim Laraia, LAMB director.

I want to wish each of you a Happy New Year!

The State Officers have been busy as well with hurricane relief. They have provided $4,000 for the 40 families in need in the Basilica and will be presenting on Sunday, Dec.23 at the 11:00 AM Mass a check in the amount of $10,000.00 to Fr. Ryszard and a check in the amount of $40,000.00 to Norma Rivera of the Spanish Ministry for twenty families who lost their entire houses during Hurricane Florence. Their aid as well as other Councils’ offerings of aid both in the form of prayer and financial aid are examples of the promise in the vision of Fr. McGivney.

Hopefully many of you have taken advantage of Br. Charlie Backes bowling extravaganza held on December 29 th. Eight dollars for two hours of bowling sounded like it would be a great time and I can’t wait to hear of the successes and failures of our bowling brothers!

We currently have sixteen knights and spouses signed up for our Corporate Communion and breakfast at the Basilica on December 30. I believe that is a fair showing for this time of year with many of us travelling to visit family. However, if you can make please let either DGK Tim or our Treasurer Rich know.

As to the future events, the Polish dinner will be held at St. Mary’s cafeteria on January 26 th and our Valentine’s dinner dance will be held on Feb. 9 th at the Shrine Hall. Please reserve your tables of 8 for the dinner dance and have a check for the full amount ($ 360.00) of the table at the January business meeting. After that meeting, we will open the dance to all. We would like to accommodate all brother knights.

Our next O&D meeting will be January 8 and the business meeting will be January 15 at BSSM. Do not forget we will have an Admissions Degree on January 22. Please try to attend the degree.

We are called,

On a rainy, dreary Saturday, ten days before Christmas, a dozen members of Council 1074 helped several members from Immaculate Conception Parish to complete the Christmas Angel Request Extravaganza (CARE). CARE is an effort to support Catholic Charities and other outreach ministries into one combined collection. As good stewards of our many gifts parishioners were encouraged to choose one or more of the tags that were displayed in the gathering area of ICC. During the weeks of November 24 and 25, December 1 and 2 these items were collected at ICC from where they would be transported to St. Joseph Church in Burgaw, NC for distribution.

The parish rented a large box truck and about twenty members from ICC along with the knights provided the necessary transportation for the collected items. These items had previously been bagged in large plastic bags, gathered and numbered for each family. Approximately eighty families were selected to receive the items they requested.

Items collected included housewares, gently used clothing, new toys and cloths for children, blankets, heaters, and boxes of diapers. About 90 bicycles were collected for distribution with the other goods. After mass on December 9 these items were assembled into groups of bags for the families that had requested them. The following Saturday these items were moved to St. Joseph Church.

When the items arrived at St. Joseph Church there was already a crowd of families waiting to pick up their items. The activity center was filled to overflowing. The items were then off loaded and placed in order by bag number in the activity center. The receiving families waited patiently while this took place. The bikes were place in an area behind the church so they were available for distribution. The items were then handed out with the knights assisting in retrieving the bags for the families, while others helped with the bikes.

Knights provided much of the man-power needed to load the truck, transport the bags of goodies, and then unload them at St. Joseph Church. Ken Levy did much of the administrative work to get the other knights there to work. DGK Tim Pflaum, along with PSD Ray Wycoff, PGK Charlie Backes, Jim Mulligan, Ben Thompson, Joe Mazur, Mike Bender, Ken Buckery, Ken Bradberry, Marty McGowan and Brian Stokes were the knights who did the work.

Early Santa Visit To the surprise and delight of St. Mary's Faith Formation first grade class, Santa, aka Lou Mattes, made an early visit on Sunday, December 16th. Santa spoke to the children about Christmas as well as answering questions about his reindeer and elves. Afterward, Santa listened to each child as the told him their wishes for Christmas and to his surprise many of the children asked not for themselves, but for family members and for

peace. Santa was so moved by their unselfish requests that he concluded his visit by singing “Away in the Manger”with Ms. Chandler, their teacher

Council Bowling Jim Bilisoly was the big winner at the council lightly attended bowling afternoon on December 29, 2018. For numerous reasons only five people showed up to bowl and Jim won every time. The first game was for high game, Jim won with a 152; second game was for intentional low game, Jim won with a 120; the third game was a special and Jim won again. Pictured for left to right are Tim Pflaum (DGK), his wife, Justine, Mary Backes (seated) and Jim Bilisoly. Charlie Backes took the picture.

We are still looking for two or more bowlers to work with existing members to form a Knights of Columbus team for the Monday morning league at Cardinal Lanes-Shipyard. Bowling would start at about 9:10 AM and teams would be made up of any combination of four people. Call Jim Bilisoly for more info (910-686-0151).

Special Olympics Donation

On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Special Olympics, Wilmington Council 1074 presented a check in the amount of $14,000 from their 2018 Operation LAMB Campaign to the Special Olympics of New Hanover County. District Deputy’s MessageBrothers,District Deputy’s Message - January 2019

Brothers,

Happy New Year!As we begin this new year of 2019 let’s pray for a year full of health and success. Thank you for all of your

efforts last year – especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence - and I know that you will try just as hard this year. It’s hard to believe but the Columbian Year is now half over so it’s important to make every moment count as we move together to the finish line. There is still time to complete programs, recruit members and talk to our Field Agent.

Right to Life MonthJanuary is Right to Life Month marking the 46th anniversary of the US Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision on January 22nd, 1973 essentially striking down all state laws prohibiting abortion. There are numerous national state and local events to mark this month, many are listed in the Dates to Remember.

On Line Membership PromotionYou should have seen a message from Colin Jorsch last week about an on-line membership promotion that gives a $5 discount off 2019 dues for any Catholic man who joins online at kofc.org/joinus during the first week of January and uses the promo code “NEWYEARKNIGHT.” Please send this to any prospective member you can think of. If they join online you can still get them to one of the two Admissions Degrees this month. Once they join your council please encourage these new members to take advantage of the Shining Armor Award and also make sure that they sit down with your FieldAgent.

Mid-Year and District MeetingsDD#1 Will Vertolli and I are holding a joint mid-year district meeting on Thursday, January 24 th in the Evangelization B room at St. Mark Church, Wilmington starting at 6:30 PM. Nine councils that make up Districts 1 and 25 are invited. Please make a strong effort to participate in this meeting as well as encourage other leadership officers, e.g. DGK, FS, etc. in your councils to attend. The agenda will be determined after the mid-year meeting but if you have suggested topics please send them to me.

provided me with their service hours already. Although I am guessing a bit, I estimate that the hours to clean up 15 locations adds up to about 100 hours (20 Knights contributing an average of 5 hours each comes to 100 hours of service).

According to my compilation of hours for Hurricane Relief from September thru November, Our council has contributed 1400 hours of service just to Hurricane Cleanup and Recovery. There may be some errors in my records due to individual Knights reporting their hours separately from reports from leaders about participants in joint projects. However, I believe that we have certainly contributed at least 1400 hours of service for Hurricane Relief/Recovery over the past three months.

Please thank all of the Brothers for the incredible service that they extended to those in need. It is truly a beautiful testimonial to the power of Love. By the way, if you have photos of the work on the various projects, please get copies to Ken Levy for Publicity; Charlie Backes for the Yearbook and to Frank Reck and me for support to the article that I intend to write about the Hurricane Recovery Effort for submission for a KofC Service Award.Thank you Barney for all that you do. God bless you and your family and all those you love, always.

All the best, Tim Pflaum, DGK

Chancellor’s ReportRalph reported that the RSVP raffle was a success and that we actually made more on the raffle than was needed to support the five seminarians in the RSVP program. Each seminarian received their check for Christmas and we have received Thank You notes back from some already. He also reported that the Christmas Party was a success. It was held at the Magnolia Green Banquet Facility in Leland. The food was great and four our our widows attended the party. They reported having a great time. The musical highlight was the “The Twelve Days of Christmas” with each table taking one day. Thank youRalph Maggio, Chancellor

Faith Director’s ReportThere are two items I would like to bring to the council's attention this month.First: The council had a Corporate Communion at the BSSM 8 AM mass on December 30. There was a good number of knights and wives who attended. A few then had the catered breakfast at the St. Mary School cafeteria. All how attended enjoyed the breakfast. The council has a corporate communion when the month has a fifth Sunday. We generally try to then eat out together. All are welcome to attend them.Second: Before mass Betty Grace presented Ed's St. Andre's Rosary to Charlie Backes who then used it to lead all in a rosary at 7:30 AM. The St. Andre's Rosary was Ed Grace's private rosary and is on loan to the

council until we can recover the original rosary Ed provided to the council. Please do not lose this one. Charlie Backes had provided a rosary from Fatima to use until we obtained another St. Andre Rosary. At the meeting on January 8 another knight will take the rosary for a month and pray the rosary as often as possible until next month.Steve Levesque Faith Director

Community Director’s Report

Brothers I am taking a different approach to the Free Throw Championship.  It is my understanding that we get few participants holding our Free Throw Championship on Saturday mornings.  This is when various Basketball Teams have their games (i.e. Halo Hoops) and the parents will most likely not pull their kids from a Saturday game.  Therefore, this year I am focusing on St Mary's School. We are going to have the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders at St Mary's School participate in the free throw contest during their P.E. classes.  The

physical education teacher is 100% behind doing this event.Tony Viollis has made arrangements for the 3rd week of January.  On Monday, January 14th and Tuesday, January 15th we will have the 6th, 7th, & 8th grade boys and girls starting at 11:00 am, students go to lunch at 12-1:00 pm and then return from 1 to 3 pm.  On Friday, January 18th we will have the 4th & 5th grade boys and girls in the afternoon.

Tony has been told if the students want to be eligible to advance to the District and State Championships then they must present their completed & signed Entry Form the day of the Free Throw Contest. If not, they will not be eligible for advancement but they can still participate to see how they score.

I will need 6-7 volunteers each day. If you are able to volunteer please let me know as soon as possible in case I need to reach out to more brothers. If you know of a brother that would want to help pass this along and/or let me know.

Lecturer’s ReportThis month I told the story of the battle during The Korean War where 10,000 marines along with some US army and British troops were cut off and faced certain annihilation. They used their code to request more of a certain type of ammo, the 60 mm mortar shell which was “Tootsie Roll”. There was confusion because the radioman receiving the distress call did not have the Marine code book so they sent several tons of actual Tootsie Rolls. It turned out they were life savers because they gave the troops energy and could be used for to solve several mechanical problems, such as leaks. After much fighting the troops arrived at the sea and were rescued with a high casualty rate. They had several nick names for these troops, one being the Tootsie

Roll Marines. Tootsie Rolls had a good use even back in the 50's.SK Charlie Backes, Lecturer

 Life Director Report

My name is Bruce Teeling and I joined Council 1074 in December. My wife and I just relocated from New Jersey and we are so happy to be parishioners at The Basilica Shrine of St. Mary. At the Officers Meeting in December I was asked to become the Life Director by the worthy GK. Thank you for the opportunity to serve our council. The supreme council has initiated a new focus for all councils to serve: council, family, parish and community: Knights in Action, Faith in Action.Catholics must be committed to the defense of life in all its stages and in every condition” (St. John Paul II, 1995). The urgency of the threat to a culture of life in our world cannot be misunderstood. The Knights of Columbus vigorously defends the dignity of each human being at every stage of life. Councils and parishes can work to build a culture of life and a civilization of love through these important programs.Under the LIFE format there are several programs the Council will be evaluating: ·         Mass for People with Special Needs·         Novena for Life·         Pregnancy Support Center;·         Christian Refugee Relief·         Ultrasound ·         Special Olympics ( which has been completed)The Novena for Life is a mandatory program and details will be available after the next Officers and Directors Meeting. Here is an overview of the Program:NOVENA FOR LIFEA Higher PurposeLead your community in the spiritual fight to establish a culture of life in our nations. Knights and their families will come together in both public and private acts of prayer to promote the protection of life.OverviewThe protection of life is a sustained prayer intention of the Church, and in particular of the Knights of Columbus. Knights remain firmly committed to defending the right to life of every human being – from the moment of conception to natural death. To commemorate and bolster this important cause, councils will promote a novena, nine days of sustained prayer, to build up a culture of life in our parishes, homes and wider community. Our monthly respect life vigil will be held on Friday, January 25, from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, at the corner of South 16th Street and Hospital Plaza Drive, Wilmington.

Wishing you and your family a Happy and Blessed New Year.

Jim Bilisoly BiographyJim Bilisoly and I spoke after he finished his Monday morning bowling at Cardinal Lanes. He bowls several times

a week. Jim lives in the Ogden area at 106 Wellington Drive. We quickly got to business. He was born on July 11, 1937 in Johnson City, Tennessee and lived there until the age of four. The family moved

to Lexington, NC for six months and then Greensboro for a long time. He moved because he father worked for Burlington Industries for many years. While in Greensboro Jim attended several schools: Curry School for 3 years, Lindsley Elementary for 2 years, St. Benedict for 2 years, Lindsley Jr High for 2 years and then Greensboro Senior High School for 3 years. While in junior high he lettered in baseball and wrestled. During this time Jim was active in scouting from age 9 to 18 moving through cubs, boy scouts to explorer scouts.

After graduating from high school he attended Guilford College for two years while he lived at home. He then transferred to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where he graduated with a degree in zoology with a minor in chemistry. Later, while attending summer classes he received his Master of Arts in Education from UNC-CH.

After college he enlisted in the US Army for three years. From basic training he was transferred to a base in Germany for two years. While there he made the rank of Spec 5 in the Analytical Equipment Operator Army Security Agency. Two big things happened while he was in Germany: he got married to Silvia and he was discharged from the army. He stayed in Germany for a while and took a Berlitz course in German to improve his ability to speak that language. Silvia and Jim then came back to the USA. Three children followed: Locrece in late 1963, Joey in 1967, and Tommy in 1976. In 1990 Jim and Silvia got a legal separation.

In 1964 Jim began his teaching career in Wilmington, NC; he retired in 1995. He taught at New Hanover High School for one year, Roland Greiss for one year, Sunset Park for five years, Wiliston for fifteen years and Hoggard High School for eleven years. During this time he taught mainly science related classes like biology, physics, chemistry, and oceanography.

In 1967 PGK Jim Todd proposed Jim to join the Knights of Columbus. Jim took all of the degrees and was elected to the recorder position. Soon after that Jim became the financial secretary and stayed in that position for the next thirty-five years. Prior to taking the financial secretary position he was a program director of one year. In 1986 Jim joined the fourth degree in the first class from the Msgr. C. Dennen Assembly. He was elected to the scribe position and then went through the chairs—Faithful Pilot, Faithful Captain, Faithful Navigator, and Faithful Admiral. Jim has served on two degree teams and still fills the position of Financial Secretary to this day.

During this time Jim was active in parish duties at St. Teresa serving on the parish council several times, the Bishop's Adversary Council, and the deanery council for Cape Fear Deanery. He still serves as lector and Eucharistic Minister.

Editor’s NotesBrothers,

This month there is no Chaplain report. However, I have asked Father John McGee to provide on and he said he would try to provide one. Hopefully there will be an input from our Insurance Representative next month too. There may have been some confusion about the deadline for the newsletter. The date below is the last date I will accept any new input to this newsletter. If you do not have it to me by that date the newsletter will be “put to bed” and the opportunity to have your say will be lost. All officers, directors and interested members can have something in this newsletter since it is yours. The deadline for the newsletter is the 20th of the month for the next issue but don’t wait. As soon as you’re planning something please send it along.
