WEBELOS LEADERS GUIDE

Attention all Webelos Leaders and Webelos Scouts:

The 2019 Gemstone District Spring Camporee will April 5-7, 2019 at VanHoy Family Campground north of Statesville. From Exit #65 on I-77 going north, turn right and then take an immediate right on to Jericho Road at the VanHoy sign. Destination on left at 742 Jericho Road. All the detailed information can be found in the Webelos Leader’s Guide at www.gemstonedistrictbsa.com .

Check-in starts Friday afternoon at 5:00 P.M. for those that wish to spend 2 nights and at 9:15 A.M. on Saturday morning and you can easily be on your way home by Noon Sunday. The cost for the event is $10 per person for Webelos and Webelos Leaders. The $10 covers the cost of patches, ribbons, supplies, and insurance. Non-leader parents can attend at $3. Addition patches may be purchased while supplies last. It is recommended and highly encouraged that each Webelos have one of his parents, grandparents, etc. accompanying him for the entire weekend. When this is not possible, an authorized adult can assume this responsibility.

SPECIAL NOTE: Even if not all money is collected by the 10:30 A.M. Saturday deadline then still bring registration form to the “circus tent” just as soon as you can with the total number of Webelos in your Patrol and the name of the Patrol so that a schedule can be developed by the 1:30 P.M. starting time for the field events. If you have just 4 or 5 in your Patrol then you may be teamed up with another 4 or 5 Webelos from another Patrol to make up a Patrol of 8 to 10 to go around together as a group.

Campsites will be inspected Saturday afternoon being graded on the point system found in the Webelos Leader’s Guide. Blue, red and yellow ribbons will be presented according to the points awarded. A special recognition will be given to the Patrol that has the best “camp gadget”. In keeping with the theme for the camporee, “A Gemstone Christmas”, campsites are encouraged to decorate accordingly.

Take note on the Events Guide sheet of the competition events on Saturday afternoon and especially the “Ride in Santa's Sleigh” where you will need to come prepared with your sleigh right off the assembly line

All Webelos and adults attending must bring a filled out Part A: Informed Consent, Release Agreement and Authorization and Part B: General Information/Health History (included in this Webelos Leader’s Guide) for each participant. These should be kept in your campsite.

A GEMSTONE CHRISTMAS2019 Spring Camporee

Twas the night before Camporee and all throughout camp, all lights were turned off except for one lamp. The bear bag was hung in the trees with some care, in hope that wild beasts would not wonder there. All Scouts were settled and all snug in their tents, and planning how to win tomorrow's events. Junior and I and the rest of the staff, continued up longer in all Scouts behalf. To the staff was delivered their information, so each one could properly set up their station. Before the staff knew, it was already morning, and Troop 171 came stomping without warning. The staff all lined up to start out the day, introducing each one the leader did say; “here’s Quinten, here’s Caleb, here’s Ivory, and Ryan, I’m Shea, the camp master and my brother ‘Lil Lighton.” The day began with a sound of great cheer, and patrols rolled along with all of their gear. Each troop made a sleigh which carried one Scout, while troop members struggled to pull them about. Troops also brought items in a shoebox donation, to help those in need throughout all the nation. The scouts then competed throughout all the day, while leaders made fruitcake to put on display. Scouts searched far and wide to locate the Grinch, but finding him hidden would not be a cinch. Campsite inspection would come very soon, they were judged on the theme that afternoon. The caroling battle, oh what a sight, produced three winners that very night. The campfire program was planned very well, each troop had fun skits and stories to tell. Again late to bed the staff would return, after counting the points that each Troop had earned. For those who participate in each event right, would earn a blue ribbon or red one or white. For the troop who achieved the most points by far, earned the top recognition, a bright Holiday star. After it all, the staff finally knew, and there was one thing left only to do. In the next morning, Troops received praise and grace, then packed up their gear without leaving a trace. As the last troop departed I heard the staff shout, “Happy Gemstone Christmas” to every Boy Scout.

IntroductionIt is the format of this Camporee to present Scouting skills and then test those skills in a competitive environment, all while having fun in the outdoors. This year’s theme was selected to help facilitate learning and fellowshipping. By incorporating a Christmas theme, it allows an opportunity to share how others around the world celebrate the holidays or allows Scouts to share individual family traditions. Please plan to participate in this year’s Camporee and share your Scouting Spirit with warm traditions of “A Gemstone Christmas”. Come join the fun!

LocationThis year’s Camporee will be held at Van Hoy Campground. Campsites will be assigned upon arrival.

You’ll Shoot your Eye Out! (BB Shoot): All you want for Christmas is an “official Red Rider carbineaction two-hundred-shot range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock”. Show your mother, teacher, and Santa that you can be responsible gun-owner. It doesn’t hurt to also show that you are agreat shot. Maybe word will spread of your marksmanship and will scare off Black Bart and his gang!

A Little Knot Here (Knot Tying): Clark hands his son a ball of lights to help him hang. However, thestrands are too short to make the distance. He must tie the short strands together using various knotsto position the lights.

Frosty… the Frozen Snow Man? (Hot Isotope): To preserve the rapidly melting man of snow, he has been cryogenically frozen (at least what’s left of him) in a canister that has become dislodged from its containment unit. The canister cannot be touched or approached within a 10 foot radius or you will be instantly frozen. You must use your intellect and work as a team to save Frosty, so he can return next winter.

Christmas Tree Stand (Lashing): You have just brought home your Christmas tree, but you do not have a stand. Use the poles provided to secure your tree so it will not fall over. Make sure to secure all poles so you can move the tree into position after it is secure. Oh, and make sure to stay quiet so you don’t wake Grandpa asleep on the couch.

Ma-ong-ith-nuck (First Aid): Schwartz Triple-Dog-Dared your friend Flick to stick his tongue to the flag pole. It is 15 degrees Fahrenheit outside and Flick has been outside with only a thin layer of clothing and his tongue stuck to the pole for at least an hour. You must quickly recue your friend from his selfmade difficulties and use your general knowledge of First Aid to treat him before it’s too late.

“It’s a funny squeaky sound” (Animal Removal): You have discovered there is a squirrel living in your Christmas tree that you cut down and brought home. Use your knowledge of how to handle wild animals and the materials provided by Russ to eliminate the animals dead or alive. It doesn’t matter, because Cousin Eddie usual eats these things.

Santa Tracker (Compass): Santa is on the move. You must map out the shortest flight path from the north pole for Santa to follow. Time is of the essence! If you cannot plot his route in time, he may not be able to deliver all the children’s gifts before Christmas Day.

The Christmas Tree’s on Fire (Fire Building): Because the dog drank all the water out of the Christmas tree stand, the tree has become very dry. To simulate what would happen if Uncle Lewis where to light his cigar near it, build a fire and start Uncle Lewis’ clothes on fire. Then show how you would extinguish Uncle Lewis’ clothes if they were to catch fire.

Christmas Dinner (Cooking): Christmas dinner has not turned out the way you would have liked. Cousin Catherine over cooked the turkey and Aunt Bethany put cat food in the jello mold. You have decided to make pancakes instead. Prepare to properly cook a pancake dinner. Cook a pancake and flip it high in the air and catch it. Then clean up your mess.

World Friendship Fund

Through the World Friendship Fund, voluntary contributions of Scouts and leaders are transformed into cooperative projects that help Scouting associations in other countries to strengthen and extend their Scouting programs. The World Friendship Fund gives the youth members of the Boy Scouts of America an opportunity to help fellow Scouts who are in need of their support. It teaches Scouts that Scouting is global. Since the inception of the World Friendship Fund, American Scouts and leaders have voluntarily donated more than $11 million to these self-help activities.

The World Friendship Fund was developed during the closing days of World War II. At that time, there was a great need to rebuild Scouting in those nations that had been wracked by war and were just emerging from the shadows of totalitarianism.

Over the years, this fund has provided Scouts from around the world with Scouting literature, uniforms, summer camp equipment, computers, and other Scouting-related supplies.

A collection for the World Friendship Fund will be held during the Sunday

morning assembly and religious service.

Please remind Scouts to bring a small donation that will be used to support their fellow Scouts in need

around the world.
