ENGLISH: Intended learning outcome: Create your own fantasy tale Keep reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. If you have a copy please use it, if you are unable to find a copy then here is an online copy.https://www.bookscool.com/en/Harry-Potter-and-the-Philosophers-Stone/1

Related skills covered in school New skills that should be focussed on

Developing suspense Powerful adjectives and

verbs Commas for parenthesis

Drop-in “-ed” clauses: Poor Tom, frightened by the fierce dragon, ran home

Task One:Reading session – respond to the text, retrieve and clarify

Read/ re-read Chapter Seventeen: The Man with Two Faces 1. What does Professor Quirrell reveal about himself to Harry? 2. What does Harry see when he looks into the Mirror of Erised?

Page 4: €¦  · Web viewWe would like you to have a go at home & we've attached a kindness calendar to record your daily acts of kindness - or you could record this in another way if you

3. What happens when Harry touches Professor Quirrell? 4. What does Harry learn about Snape from Dumbledore? 5. What is the final result of the House Cup?

Challenge QuestionsWhy do you think Ron and Harry become such fast friends? Why do they also become such close friends with Hermione? What is the dynamic of these friendships? What is the point of the House Cup? Why do you think students are sorted in the first place? Do you think that the final result is fair?Task Two:Skills Session – Commas for Parenthesis

We need to include commas for parenthesis in our final write so let’s focus on this skill today.

ChallengeCreate sentences with parenthesis about the character in Harry Potter

Task Three:

Starter task – Let’s revisit drop in –ed clauses as we need to include these in our final write. Can we add drop in –ed clauses successfully?

Harry ran cautiouslyCould become…

Harry, exhausted and breathless, ran cautiously.

Add drop in –ed clauses to these Harry leapt boldly. Ron snored. Dumbledore strode purposefully. Hagrid held Fluffy fiercely. Hermione was furious.

Page 6: €¦  · Web viewWe would like you to have a go at home & we've attached a kindness calendar to record your daily acts of kindness - or you could record this in another way if you

Task: Today we need to prepare for our final write by creating the key elements of our fantasy tale - setting and character

Your outcome task is to write a fantasy tale and so the first step towards this is to consider a setting for your tale. In Harry Potter we have encountered a range of magical settings:

Hogwarts Castle Diagon Alley The Forbidden Forest

Would you like to create a fantasy setting outside (cave, woodland, snowy mountains, coast, heath, parkland…) or will you choose a building (tower, hut, school, theatre, dungeon…)?Select a setting which will be key to your tale – feel free to select a setting image below or create your ownDraw/ cut out your setting (a small sketch) and jot down powerful words to

describe your setting

Now use the powerful words you have selected to write a couple of sentences introducing your setting. Character creation - In Harry Potter we have encountered a range of characters:

Harry Snape Malfoy Hagrid

Select two characters which will be key to your tale – feel free to use images below or create your ownDraw/ cut out your two characters (a small sketch) and jot down powerful words to describe them

Page 7: €¦  · Web viewWe would like you to have a go at home & we've attached a kindness calendar to record your daily acts of kindness - or you could record this in another way if you

You have now created/ selected your main setting and two key characters, we will be planning our fantasy tale tomorrow. Task Four:

Today we need to plan our final write, we have provided a story planning frame to guide you but feel free to plan in your own way. The planner we have created includes boxes for you to add all of the skills we have been working on in the build up towards our final write.

Setting- you created a fantasy setting yesterday, will you open with a setting description? Think back to your apprentice write and the setting description you created for Diagon Alley.

Character – you created two fantasy characters yesterday, consider powerful ways to describe them and how they will behave

You might choose to begin by jotting a brief plan of your fantasy tale around the planner and then build on your ideas by adding detail and considering each skill.

Remember we are looking for: Commas for parenthesis Drop in –ed clauses Powerful word choices Tension

Task Five: You’ve worked really hard towards today’s task already. Using your planners and considering all of the skills we have been working on along the way your task today is to draft your final write.Consider your opening carefully, selecting exciting vocabulary and building tension. When we studied Stormbreaker we looked at different ways to open a narrative. Remember to create a vivid picture of your setting for the reader. Introduce your characters with care.

Once you have drafted your final write edit as we would do in class. Check carefully:

For punctuation errors Look up spellings you are unsure of Alter words for greater impact Check for correct tense throughout

We are looking forward to reading your final edited tales!MATHSIntended learning outcome: To use an appropriate written method for division.

See the LJS progression in calculation document (available at: https://www.lymingtonjuniorschool.org/our-curriculum/#Mathematics-and-Times-Tables-at-LJS) for additional guidance as required.

Warm up:Visit https://corbettmaths.com/5-a-day/primary/ and select a daily challenge. TIP: Start at ‘Bronze’ and work up from there if required.

Please refer to the ‘Maths Challenge Task’ is contains a challenge called ‘Maze’. Try and complete the maze using your mathematical knowledge. When you have complete make your own to challenge your family.

Extension for session 4:

Please refer to the ‘Maths Extension Task’. This has 7 test style questions of varying difficulty focusing on division and the other operations. A mark scheme has also been included.

SCIENCE

The science for this week is all about practical challenges. Choose one of these fun tasks to carry out and observe what happens. You may want to record your experiment- including equipment/materials, method (what you did), results and perhaps a conclusion - what you have learned from the experiment. Don't forget to ask an adult before using the resources and also make sure you tidy up afterwards! Have fun and we'd love to see pictures of your experiments!

Advance notice- for next week's challenge you'll need an egg!

PSHE

This week we would like you to think about some PSHE (Personal, social & health education). Our learning intention is to think about what kindness is and how we can be kind at home in these unusual times.Remember when we talked about kindness in school- and how for the whole of January we encouraged you to do something kind every day? We would like you to have a go at home & we've attached a kindness calendar to record your daily acts of kindness - or you could record this in another way if you prefer.

There are lots of ways that you can be kind: by saying nice words to your family, helping out around the house or garden, sending a letter to a friend or family members that you haven't seen during the lockdown.

Geography Topic in focus: Natural Resources

This week we are learning about one of our most valuable natural resources - wood. Our learning intention is: to identify parts of the world where wood is produced and to consider some of the problems associated with its production.

Your success criteria are as follows:

I know some of the countries where wood is produced.I can describe some uses of wood and name wood products.I can explain why some products are imported and exported.

We have attached the slideshow that we would have gone through in class and there is a worksheet that explains the task for you.
