An opportunity to have your work celebrated in print!

Send us your work as Talking continues to Take Off in Luton through our Places and Dreams project.

Introduction for families and children

We would like you to send us your pictures, poems, rhymes, drawings, comic strips to tell us about the places you know and enjoy visiting in Luton, or things you are dreaming of doing again. The instructions below will tell us what we are looking for and how to do it!

Introduction for carers, childminders, practitioners, teachers, community workers and groups

Many of you will have been part of Talking Takes Off in Luton over the past year. As part of our continuing work around developing Luton as communication friendly place to live, work, learn and grow, we have an exciting project to invite children and families to be part of. We are seeking children’s work to make a collection. Please see the information below for details.

We would like you to encourage the families and children that you work with to take part; as a project, a home learning opportunity, a transition activity, or a celebration of your own!

What are we doing?

We are making a collection of children’s work to represent their feelings about being in Luton and their dreams for the future.

Why are we doing this?

Our aim is to ’keep the conversation going’ in Luton and think about all the different ways we can communicate. Communication in all its forms is so important; talking, signing, gestures, through music, dance, stories and rhymes. We want to celebrate this through children’s contributions!

What shall I draw, paint or write about?

There are two themes;

1. Places I know 2. Things I dream of doing again

You might like to draw a picture of you and your family feeding the ducks at the park, write a poem about how you felt when you were not at school, draw a comic strip about a funny thing that happened when you were making dinner, write a short story about a trip you would like to make to the seaside, draw a picture of your favourite meal, make up a rhyme about what you can see outside your window. Let your imagination go wild!

What can I submit?

We welcome all kinds of work; let your imagination go wild! Think about a short story, poem, rhyme, comic strip, picture or drawing.

It can be completed on your laptop, computer or tablet and emailed to Flying Start. You can also scan and email your work or just pop it into the post to us!

Your work does not have to be in English. We want to represent as many of the languages heard and used in Luton as possible.

Work can be submitted by individuals and families. Schools, nurseries, childminders and community groups can also, with permissions, submit work on behalf of children.

You may prefer not to put your name on your work as it will be published. You may like to add your first name only so friends and family can see your name in print!

Please include the consent from below.

Who is eligible?

Toddlers, children and young people from all ages up to primary school year 6 who live in Luton or attend a Luton children’s centre, pre-school, nursery, childminder or school.

Is there a prize?

No. There will not be a prize but your work will be published in the collection and may be used in future works in and around the town (with your permission).

When is the deadline for submissions?

Friday 6th November 2020 at midday
