Dear [Proctor Elementary School] Community, Welcome to a new school year! We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to help your students reach their full potential this year. This summer, our staff spent a lot of time thinking about this question: When our kindergarteners graduate in 2027, what knowledge will they need to be ready for their careers? California has recently updated its learning standards to focus on building the skills students will need to get 21 st Century jobs, and we plan to meet those goals with each of our students. Meeting these new standards means changing the way we teach. Over the course of this year, you’ll notice that happening in each of our classrooms. Our students will be working with ideas in more involved ways. They will be getting hands-on experiences, opportunities to experiment and make mistakes and a chance to try new approaches to solving problems. As parents, you can and should expect your students to come home eager to talk about what they’ve learned, to connect it to the world around them and to experiment with new ideas. Our students will be learning to use information like cooks use ingredients. This means learning the qualities of good information, what it can be used for and how to combine information to create new opportunities. So, expect fewer worksheets with questions that only have one right answer, and more projects that require students to really think and apply what they know. Each one of you also has a critical role to play in this change. Give your children ways to practice what they’re learning in class out in the real world. Ask them about their thought process, and not just the result. Ask their teachers questions. Look for ways to keep tapping into their curiosity beyond the school walls. This will be a team effort. We look forward to another year of working together to build a bright future for our students and for our community. Dear [Proctor Elementary School] Community,

Welcome to a new school year! We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to help your students reach their full potential this year.

This summer, our staff spent a lot of time thinking about this question: When our kindergarteners graduate in 2027, what knowledge will they need to be ready for their careers? California has recently updated its learning standards to focus on building the skills students will need to get 21st Century jobs, and we plan to meet those goals with each of our students.
