How to deal with unseen passage

Comprehension of passage:-

Comprehension means understanding the matter so each passage should be read carefully, thoroughly

and understood fully. They may have to read it twice or even thrice to comprehend it well .

Some hints for answering comprehension questions

Comprehension is a skill and every skill demands practice. Once you have mastered the skill, you will

realize that it is no difficult to answer the questions given in a passage because the answers are very

much present in the passage itself.

The following points should be kept in mind while attempting an unseen passage

1 The passage should be read carefully. Read the passage twice or thrice till the central theme of

the passage is not grasped by you.

2 Now, the questions are read carefully. When you see the answer of the question, put it down in

your own words not in the language used in the text.

3 The answer should be written in a simple and correct language.

4 The answer should be as brief as possible.

5 The answers should be in the same tense as used in the question.

6 The answer should be based on what is written in the passage. There is no scope for the

students’ own knowledge or personal opinion.

7 The answer should be in one’s own words and correct language.

LETTER WRITING Letter writing is an art. Now days it is an essential part of life-personal as well as professional.1 Write as you speak. Your letter should be in the nature of a conversation. 2 Adopt a familiar style for those who are intimate, but write in formal tone to the strangers. 3 Use a suitable beginning before you start with the actual letter (Body of letter)4 Write what you have to say – clearly, briefly & precisely.5 Never fail to date you letter. 6 Write in a simple and clear language. The style of a letter depends on the nature of its contents.

Private letters should be in the conversational style. 7 Business letters should be short, concise and to the point; and official letters format and

dignified.8 Correct spellings are equally desirable even in the most familiar forms of correspondence. A

letter should be legible, grammatically correct and rightly spelt.9 Punctuation & proper format should be taken care of.

Various Parts of letters.1 Sender’s Name and Address:- It includes the writer’s name and address. It is

written at the top on the left hand corner of the page.

2 Date:- while writing date, note that the day is written in figures, month in words and year in full figure e.g.

3 Receiver’s address:- this is not required in personal letters. The official letters should be addressed to his/her official capacity; as

4 Subject:- It is not required in personal letters, But it is must in official letters. It must be as brief as possible. Maximum three or four words. It must be the pivot for the body of the letter.

5 Salutation:- It is complimentary little getting to the person to whom the letter is addressed. It is a formal way of beginning a letter. The form of greeting or salutation depends on the relation and degree of intimacy between the writer and the addressee







in personal letters. But in official letters ‘Sir’ or ‘Madam’ is used mostly.

6 Body of the letter:- This is the main part of the letter. It consists of three parts; an introduction, the message which includes the main information and conclusion, which always is expressed politely or gives suggestions about the problems expressed. It should be well arranged and divided suitably into separate to paragraphs. Be brief, courteous and to the point.

7 The subscription/complimentary close:- the most common forms in business letters are ‘your faithfully ’. In case of personal letters most common form is ‘yours affectionately ’.

8 Signature:- The formal letters require your full signature below the signature, the name of the person and the position are mentioned. In personal letters, write the name by which you are known among your relatives and friends.

9 Outside address : - This is written on the envelop or the Post Card.

1. Your father has arranged for a lot of gifts to be given to your sister in her marriage. You feel that these gifts are like giving dowry to your sister. Write your views on the topic bringing out the use and abuse of this custom in about 125 words.

LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS FROM PROSE SECTION1. Why did Lencho write a letter to God?Lencho was a hard working farmer living with his family in a lonely house on the top of the low hill. That year his crop was very good and needed a shower. It rained but the rain brought hailstones and destroyed the whole crop. Not even a single leaf was left on the plants. He had no hope of help except help from God. He had firm faith in God and he decided to write a letter to God requesting to send hundred pesos to sow seeds again and to live until the crop grew up. The letter reached to the postmaster. The postmaster was also a man of faith, who did not want to shake the faith of Lencho. He collected seventy pesos from his employees and sent it to Lencho. On opening the envelop Lencho got angry as he received only seventy pesos instead of hundred pesos. Once again he wrote a letter to God to send him the remaining money with a request not to send through the post office employees as they were a bunch of crooks.

2. Summarise the chapter ‘Nelson Mandela -Long walk to Freedom.The chapter was taken from Nelson Mandela’s autobiography ‘Long Walk to Freedom. Nelson Mandela spoke about a historic occasion, ‘the inauguration’ after becoming the first Black President of South Africa. The inauguration ceremony took place in the Union Buildings amphitheatre in Pretoria today. It was attended by politician and dignitaries from more than 140 countries around the world. After along period of White domination, South Africa had become a democratic republic. Mandela called it a common victory for justice, peace and human dignity. He also called it a glorious human achievement. He pledged to liberate all his people from the continuing bondage of poverty, derivation, suffering, gender and other discrimination. He fought for the freedom of his people. The British rulers of South Africa followed the policy of apartheid, which discriminated the Black from the White people. Mandela called it an extra ordinary human disaster. He believed, the deeper the oppression, the higher the character. From his comrades he learned that courage meant not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. According to him every man had twin obligations- obligations to his family and obligation to his people, his country. He found no difference between the oppressor and the oppressed. He called both of them prisoners. One was imprisoned behind the bars; the other was imprisoned behind bars of hatred. He was an enthusiastic young boy who wanted to enjoy freedom. He wished the sun of freedom to shine on his country and countrymen forever.

3. How did the young seagull make his first flight?Or

Describe the methods used by the seagull family to help the young seagull overcome his fear and fly?The young seagull was afraid to fly. He thought his wings were too weak to support him. His family tried to help him. They encouraged him to fly but he could not. His family members scolded and even threatened to leave film alone on the ledge to starve. Nearly twenty-four hours he remained alone and hungry. His mother decided to motivate him by showing a piece of fish but did not feed him. Maddened by hunger, he tried to snatch it by diving. She flew away. He fell down and cried in terror. Then instinctively, his wings spread out, he flapped them and started flying. In this way he made his first flight. His family members praised him and encouraged him by cracking joyfully around him.







4.Do you agree that the story ‘The Black Aeroplane’ is a mystery? Justify.A pilot was flying in his Old Dakota plane. It was very clear sky and the flight was easy. He was dreaming of holiday with his family. Suddenly he saw black storm clouds in the sky. He had limited fuel so he could neither fly over the clouds nor go back to Paris. He flew straight into the storm clouds. Everything was black there. Instruments of the aeroplane stopped working. Suddenly he could see another black aeroplane. The pilot of the aeroplane guided him through the black clouds. He came out of the clouds and could see the light of the runway. The pilot of the Dakota wanted to thank the pilot of the black aeroplane and went to the control room. But nobody had seen that black aeroplane. It was really a mystery.







5. Give the character sketch of Anne highlighting her intelligence and talkativeness.OR

Why did Mr. Keesing punish Anne? What was the punishment?Anne was about thirteen year old girl living with her grandmother. She loved her very much and lighted a candle on her birthday. She decided to write a diary because she didn’t have any intimate friend, feeling that paper has more patience than people. She was a mature and intelligent girl. She made her maths teacher Mr. Keesing annoyed by non-stop talking. He asked her to write an essay on ‘A Chatter Box’ and then on ‘An Incorrigible Chatterbox, which she wrote justifying her habit. But she didn’t give up her habit of talking. Again the teacher gave an essay on ‘Quack,Quack,Quack’. She had a very good sense of humour. With her friend Sanne, she wrote a poem about father swan and three baby ducklings. The ducklings were bitten to death by the father because they quacked too much. The reply changed the teacher’s opinion about her and never assigned any extra homework to her as a punishment.

6. Give a Brief character-sketch of Wanda Peronski.Wanda Petronski was a poor Polish girl. She joined an American school. She was different from other students. She was very calm and quiet girl. She wore the same blue dress everyday. She did not mind being made fun of by her classmates Peggy and Maddie. She did not have any true friend. She was a talented, creative and had a good aesthetic sense. She drew sketches of hundred dresses having different colours and design and won the girl’s medal in the art competition. This also proved her statement that she had hundred dresses all lined up in the closet.7. Give a Brief character –Sketch of Peggy.Peggy was a rich, pretty American girl. She was intelligent, good at studies and scored good marks. She loved fun and enjoyed teasing Wanda because of her faded blue dress. She kept asking her mockingly how many dresses she had. She took Wanda a dull-headed girl and could never realize how bad Wanda must be feeling about her teasing. She changed her opinion when Wanda won the girl’s medal in the drawing competition. She praised wholeheartedly Wanda’s drawings. She also visited Boggins Heights and wrote letters when Wanda stopped coming to school.8. Give a brief character-sketch of Maddie.Maddie was a kind and compassionate American girl. She joined other girls in teasing Wanda. But she really didn’t like teasing others. She wanted to stop Peggy from teasing Wanda. But she could not gather courage as she was afraid of Peggy. She feared Peggy could make her the next victim. She considered herself to be guiltier for remaining silent. When Wanda left the school, she felt very restless and could not sleep at night. She went to Wanda’s house to say sorry and decided not to remain silent if anybody was being teased for their poor dress or funny name. She would speak up. She was even ready to sacrifice her friendship with Peggy.9. Give a brief character sketch of Lomov.Lomov was a young, unmarried man of thirty five. He was anxious to get married as he had already reached a critical age. So he decided to propose a girl in the neighbourhood. Her name was Natalya, a girl of twenty-five years old. Lomov thought that she was a good housekeeper and was not bad looking. Further she was







unmarried. Lomov was a funny character. He was suffering from palpitation. He behaved as if he were eccentric. He was so eager to marry Natalya. But when he came to propose to her, he started quarrelling over trifles. He quarreled on issues like Oxen Meadows and pet dogs named Squeezer and Guess. He even abused Natalya and her father Chubukov while quarreling. 10. Give a brief character sketch of Natalya.Natalaya was a young unmarried girl of twenty five years. She lived in the neighbourhood of Lomov, a young unmarried man. She was an excellent housekeeper and was not bad looking. She was thirsting for love. Her father called her a lovesick cat. Lomov said that she was well educated, but she did not seem to be so. She was very quarrelsome and abusive by nature. She began a bitter quarrel with Lomov over a piece of land that had little value. She said that those meadows were not much worth to her but she could not stand unfairness. But when she learnt that Lomov had come to propose to her, she forgot all fairness and unfairness. She began to wail over the lost chance .She forced her father to call him back. But in no time, she started quarrelling with him again. It was on their dogs. Both claimed their respective dogs to be of a superior breed.







SUPPLEMENTARY READER (Long Answer Type Questions)

1.What was the problem with Tricki? How did Mr. Herriot cure it?Mrs. Pumphrey had a small pet dog named Tricki. She pampered him by giving chocolates, cakes, juice, eggs, wine etc. She thought that he was suffering from mal-nutrition and needed more energy. But she didn’t give him any exercise. So Tricki became extremely fat like a bloated sausage with a leg at each corner. He stopped eating .His eyes became red and rheumy. He was brought to the hospital for treatment. Every one in the family was in tears. Mrs. Pumphrey started wailing. It was really a sad, pathetic and tearful party. Dr. Herriot gave no medicine. He simply cut his diet and gave more exercises. Within a fortnight Tricki became normal and healthy. He became a muscled, flexible and normal dog. It leapt in the lap of his mistress. Mr. Pumphrey was very happy to see him and thanked gratefully to Dr. Herriot. She called it a ‘Triumph of Surgery’.
