I am often asked about what equipment I use and for equipment recommendations. So hopefully this document will help you make informed decisions as you equip your boat to ensure safe voyages. Below mentioned text is copied in July 2020 and applies for fast boats (capable >20 km an hour) for recreational use < 15 meter. Always check for any changes.

The boat: design and equipment

There must be a registration number (the so-called Y number) on both sides of the boat. This must be clearly visible and in a color different than the color of the boat and its size must comply with the legal measurements described in chapter 8 of the BPR.

The engine must be technically in order so that it does not produce (dense) smoke and there is no danger of fire or an explosion.

There must be an effective muffler on the engine’s exhaust that meets the valid regulations about noise nuisance.

The steering mechanism must be well constructed and functional. The boat must have a switch to kill the engine (dead man’s switch) and automatically stop the engine if

the skipper

becomes ill or falls overboard.

There must be a lifejacket within reach of every passenger. There must be a ready-to-use and approved (every two years) fire extinguisher on board. The skipper’s license, the boat’s registration certificate and the BPR (digital is also allowed) must be on

board. The BPR

does not have to be on board a small, open boat.

There must be a suitable boat’s horn or horn on board to give audio signals. It is also advisable to carry a paddle and a ready-to-use anchor suitable for the type and weight of the

boat.

Basics Training for (power)boat ownersBe a 100% sober captain, take safety extremely important and seriously.

Alcohol causes delays in your reaction time, impairs clear judgement of risks. The captain is always responsible, apply “ good seamanship”.

Do not/never go on a ship/boat with a captain who does not practice these principles!

1) Follow a PB 2 course, gain practical and theoretical knowledge2) CEVNI Inland water regulations3) Follow a VHF SRC course, gain practical and theoretical knowledge4) Follow a First aid course, gain practical and theoretical knowledge5) Get your crew trained as well! (one is none, you can not do everything by/on your own)

Continue your training, exercise the maneuvers every time you are on the water.

Give crew members tasks/responsibilities (generally they enjoy this), however the tasks must be within their capabilities. Talk to your crew. Can everybody swim, who has a first aid course completed, who has an SRC certificate, what experience do they have etc.?

Do not underestimate children, they can do a lot and often like to have responsibilities (within their capabilities). You can send them for example on a First Aid course and make them responsible for the First Aid kit (but as captain you must always check). Their brains are like sponges, they absorb everything. So, fill their brains with knowledge and good practice of good seamanship.

Lifejackets = auto inflatable, with spray hood, with automatic emergency light, with cross strap (between the legs) and metal fixings (plastic easily gets broken due to influence of UV light and hot and cold temperature differences). Do not store on the boat but at home, safe from weather/water impact. Wear (you, your crew and guests) the lifejackets all of the time! Beware of corrosion of the CO2 cylinder.

Kru, minimum of 150 N(ewton) for inland waters. Models change often.

Attached to it, LED flare and mobile VHF with DSC and GPS.

In my neighborhood (in a circle of 500 meters) 2 persons unfortunately died in 1 year (2018) Both alone, 1 fell off the dock against the boat he was working on, hit his head and 1 fell of his slow canal boat and was hit by his own boat (no kill cord used) which was found circling empty in the water. Both unfortunately drowned. Neither were wearing a life jacket…

In 2020 I was told a story by a PB 2 lady student who was an actual MOB of a sailboat, without a lifejacket but survived after being in the water 20 minutes floating under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA. After 3 failed attempts (the crew had not been instructed in safety measures) the remaining crew was able to retrieve her in the fourth attempt. At that point, she was cold and losing coordination; the average water temperature in the SF bay is 11 Celsius.

So please buy them, service them yearly and wear them (for yourself and your crew/passengers) with crotch strap.

Under Dutch law you must wear a lifejacket if you are the driver of a motorboat that can go faster than 20 kilometer an hour and have lifejackets on board for all passengers on board. For the passengers they have to be in hands reach. Just wear them all the time, compare it to a seatbelt in your car.

Remember, a MOB is an immediate MAYDAY via VHF DSC. It is not up for discussion. Look at the pre-classified MAYDAY possibilities in your VHF. Do not wait after your own (possibly failing) attempts to recover the MOB. The KNRM need to get there first before they can help, do not waste valuable time. If

you retrieve the casualty yourself, you can always cancel the Distress/MAYDAY (unless medical assistance if required for example due to the cold, drowning, secondary drowning).

VHF Marine Radio (only buy one with DSC and its own GPS is my advice!!!)

Fixed VHF Marine Radio with DSC (Digital Selective Calling) and GPS and if you have the money with AIS. I have an Icom with large screen for visibility and DSC/GPS and AIS receiver.

Portable VHF Marine Radio with DSC (Digital Selective Calling) and GPS floating and light, always attached to my lifejacket. Have spare batteries on hand!

Anchor(s), I have 2. Complying to RYA/MCA regulations. Look at the schedule further down below in this document. Both foldable, 10 meters of the correct chain and the 25 meters of correct rope. Kill cords (of the Original Equipment Manufacturer/OEM) Check in the shop immediately after purchase (before you leave the store!). I have 1 (bought in a legitimate shop) that does not have a cord in it (extremely dangerous, could break in 2 parts without stopping the engine). I have 4 (with cord) on board. If it is very cheap check, it could mean they are not up to specs, but also normal prices do not give a guarantee for correct quality. So please check!! Must be in good working order and be worn around the upper leg tightly (not on your hand/wrist it can tangle with your steer and or throttle and can get easily of).

If you are on board a fast ship that has a substandard killcord (or none!) make the captain aware of the proper equipment and procedures (perhaps (s)he is unaware). Take example of the RYA instructors, KNRM, Water police. If the captain does not correct the fault, leave the ship immediately.

Fire Extinguisher 2 x powder, approved both for saltwater usage, look for the correct SOLAS marking (steer wheel sign). Although a little more expensive, it is what you need on the water, it is better protected to (salt) water, required by SOLAS/MED regulations, Safety Off Lives At Sea/Marine Executive Directive). Serviced yearly! There are also CO2 and foam extinguishers. I advise powder for water situations on an open boat with outboard engine.

For recreational motorboats able to go faster than 20 kilometer an hour it is required to have a good functioning and approved fire extinguisher on board, for private (non commercial) boats serviced once every 2 years. If there is corrosion, replace asap.

If your outboard engine is on fire, leave the hood on (or else is the fire will flare up due to the extra oxygen). Cut off the fuel. Put in the powder via the openings in the hood. When empty, cover with tightly with your fire blanket completely, so no air /oxygen can get in.

Fire Knock outSomething I am looking into is the following.

It is a fire knock out system. Available in 2 different sizes. You can throw is into a fire (for example on another boat, like the picture below where an extinguisher cannot be used safely/efficiently) or put it in the cabin or engine of your own boat. It is automatically activated in case of fire, even when you are not there.

Remember fire on board is a distress/mayday situation, call for help immediately with your VHF (equipped with DSC and GPS)!

Rescue slingMany types available, from 70 euro and higher. Just google. Keep in mind, I have not found one yet that can stand UV light and water impact for longer than a couple of years.

Horse shoesI have 2 with light and small sea anchor attached. Starting at 70 euro (including light) and more.

Horn 5 x, often called as a “foghorn”. For use when visibility is bad, not only when it is foggy. Can also, be used for other sound signals. 2 x plastic, 1 metal, one on speaker working on the VHF system and 1 working on compressed air in a cannister. Can be bought at any good shop in a marina. Always have 2 possibilities on board.

Compass 2x, a fixed one and a handheld (last one stored in a box), a large one so I can read the numbers.

Plotter, GPS separate from VHF, depth sounder, fish finder. However I prefer updated paper charts as primary navigation tool. Electronics can fail and can make you a bit lazy.

I have a relatively older model, modern ones offer increasing possibilities. It’s preferable to be one that can be updated on your boat via wifi. Models change frequently (often yearly).

TPA Thermal Protective Aid(s), 11 on board, 1 used for training, solas /med approved

MOB (Man Over Board) go in it with wet clothes on. Creates 100% humidity, preventing further heat loss due to exposure, patients reheat themselves if possible.

About 20 euro per TPA (The ships wheel sign means it complies to MED regulations)

Knives 2, 1 floating especially for on boats with a blunt point so less change of tube punctures, 20/30 euro and 1 diving knife.

PlacementEverything needs a specific/designated and well signed place, so you (and others) can always find it. Store items preferably waterproof and UV light resistant and if possible protected from hot and cold variances. I use Dymo labels UV resistant and waterproof to label most items.

Keep in mind, water and UV light, heat and cold differences can ruin anything. Saltwater is even worse than fresh water.

ChecklistMake a checklist of your gear and its location on your boat. Indicate where and when replacement or service/maintenance is needed. Go through the checklist before the start of each boating season and make sure everything is in date for the complete season.

Replace batteries for all equipment every year before the start of your boating season.

Complete the checklist before each trip you make.

Organize your checklist in that way that you start at the front (bow) of your boat and work to the back (stern). That makes checking easier and quicker and the chance of forgetting something is much smaller.

Flag/WimpelBuy a KNRM flag every year for about 10 euros. These are the unpaid volunteers that will safe you on the water 24/7. They receive no money from the government at all; they deserve your assistance. They will assist you for free.

Buy the Ambuballon, approx. 18/30 euro, provides fresh air with 21% oxygen (where mouth to mouth breaths provides 17% oxygen, which is just enough to keep you barely alive). From 17% to 21% is about 24% more oxygen! Imagine getting a pay raise of 24%, would that not make you happy? Your body would appreciate the same oxygen raise if it starts with 17% and is going to 21% 4 times a minute. Normally an adult in rest would take 12 to 20 breaths a minute…..

A useful tool is a Pulse Oxymeter, from 30 euros and upwards. You can determine what the heartbeat rate is (if any) and the oxygenation of the casualty even in noisy/stressful situations. Can give a sound alarm signal if heartbeat rate drops/stops.

Just imagine yourself being stuck alone on a 7 meter open RIB in a broken lock (full of boats and you are not allowed to get of your boat because it will be fixed anytime) for hours and not being able to get some relief. I will not happen to me (again).

Useful tips of students. If you are boiling water on your boat on the water (with waves) always wear your waterproof

jacket. If you spill boiling water due to unstable boat your arms/body is protected against burns
