Groups

Warm up activity Read Lonesome Big and Little Dog up to ‘he decided to be brave..’ or use the pictures below.Give children pictures to look at and discuss using the question...What are Bog People like? Children write ideas down in books.

Direct Teaching KQ – If we were going to write about Big People – what would people want to know about them? Appearance, habitat, food, behaviour, skills, routine etcKQ- How would we start off our first paragraph? Introducing the main – remind the children that the first paragraph needs to link to the final paragraph e.g tree giants are rare/ why they are rareKQ- How does the second sentence start? A question. KQ - Why does the writer use a question? To talk to the reader directly and make them think.AfL – What is a topic sentence? First sentence introduces topic, other sentences support the first sentence.Model how to plan a topic sentence:Behaviour:

Quiet and subdued

Week Beginning: 30th November Text: The Tree Giants

Hides in squelchy mud –camouflage - so no-one notices them Dry conditions – banks of river – Liable/prone to burn – hides in foliage

Discuss word choices. KQ – Which words do you not understand? Can you work out what they might mean? AfL – Which words are technical vocab? (See yellow)Explain that the personality – quiet and subdues leads onto the supporting sentences which explain how we know they are quiet and subdued and what they do. Explain how the second point adds additional information to the first point. The third and fourth point add detail to the second point.Explain to children that you would like them to plan their non-chronological report.Show them how ensure that they have enough information by using the format above. Talk about how the first bullet point links to the main point/subheading and then the point is elaborated on in the next 3 bullet points.

Independent activity Children complete a planning sheet focusing on topic sentence paragraphs.

Groups

Warm up activity Retell text to practice report

Direct teaching AfL – What features do we know about a non-chronological report so far? KQ- Who is the author talking to? Us KQ- How do you know? The use of ‘you’. Explain that when we address the reader directly we us the word ‘you’ KQ- Why is this important? So you can relate to the topic. The author also uses comparisons to help us relate to a subject that we don’t know about. We call the use of YOU second person. KQ – Does the author use you all the way through the text? No Why? Because it would make the text too informal and would feel like the writer was only talking to you. KQ- What other person does the author use as well? Third person. KQ - Can you give me examples of third person?

KQ – Can you find 3 verbs in the text? What do you notice about them? They don’t use – ed. KQ – Why do they not use –ed? Because it is written in the present tense – it is happening now, it hasn’t already happened. As I write my piece, look out for mistakes in the verbs...Bog Fairies are a type of magical creature that are rarely seen by the naked eye.Have you ever thought that murky bogs sometimes seemed to glisten? In fact, those sparkles that you spotted are actually magical creatures. Bog Fairies are miniscule creatures with iridescent wings, stumpy green bodies and piercing blue eyes like the sea stars. The majority of bog fairies were the size of a baby nymph but with a much sturdier physique. However, some had been recorded as large that are as large as lily pad, but much more rotund. The

main feature of a Bog Fairy is their iridescent wings that flutter so fast, that they create mini tornadoes. Talk through the words highlighted in yellow, making links between them and with previous words. Tak through the use of a past tense verb and the incorrect use of were and had. Also identify the use of second person in the question.Identify the use of comparison in the text – baby nymph and lily pad.Discuss how the paragraph has been constructed with the topic sentence structure

Warm up activity Give children one paragraph of an original text(See below) with the verbs changed to present text. KQ - Can children change them back to present tense?Bogeymen usually lived underground or in sewers. They were very shy and liked to hide so that they couldn’t be seen. Their homes were damp, squelchy places. They made sure their sofas were wet and their walls were mouldy. In the daytime, they kept well hidden but as the sun went down they would come to the surface to scare children. If you wanted to see a Bogeyman, you would hide by a manhole at night where you had seen a bogyman’s slimy footprints!

Direct teaching Show the children the next part of the text:Like the Moor Fairy, Bog Fairies are quiet and subdued creatures. They like to camouflage themselves in squelchy mud so as to go unnoticed by other residents of the bog. In dry conditions, the fairies retreat to the banks of rivers, where fairies can find secluded holes to hide in. As the sun reaches midsummer, fairies have to hide in foliage to protect their skin which is prone to burn.Peat is essential for a bog fairy’s survival. It is a nutritious food source which provides many of the compounds needed to keep their wings glossy and in peak condition. Not only that, they use layers of peat to keep them warm through the harsh winters. They build it in to peat igloos which trap warm air inside and prevent cold air flooding in.Although tiny, and some would believe insignificant, without these tiny creatures life in the bog would diminish and it would become a barren wasteland.Talk through the words highlighted in yellow – discuss what the words mean – adding them to the words webs from previous sessions.KQ- Do you notice anything about the first section? Talk about how the text is clunky as we are repeating the same

Page 6: d6vsczyu1rky0.cloudfront.netd6vsczyu1rky0.cloudfront.net/29948_b/wp-content/uploads/... · Web viewTo discuss and clarify the meanings of words, linking new meanings to known vocabulary

word. KQ- How could we make it less clunky? Use pronouns eg theyLook at the sentence starters, KQ- what do you notice about them? Can you identify any generalisers? Like the moor fairy.Discuss the use of the topic sentence paragraphs which shows how supporting sentences develop the main idea.Look at the last paragraph KQ- What did we say about the first and last paragraph? They have to link. KQ – Do these two paragraphs link? How do you know?Talk about how there has been added information dropped in as an embedded clause between two commas (GD)

did you know a bogeyman might hide under your bed or in your wardrobe waiting to grab you and put you in the sewer if you dont sleep hopefully this will never happen to youExplain to the children that what we are doing is called proof reading.

KQ- What do you think proof-reading is? What do you look for when you proof-read? Identify missing/incorrect punctuation, wrong spellings and check it makes sense – eg check that you are writing the right tense and right person, for example, you don’t change from past to present tense or from first to third person.

Direct Teaching Look at this version:Diet

Bogeymen are omnivores. They drink toilet water. Their diet also consists of toenail clippings, scabs and bogies. A bogeyman’s favourite snack is flies.

Interesting facts

Bogeymen are best known for their ability to sneak into human homes.

Did you know a bogeyman might hide under your bed or in your wardrobe? Hopefully this will never happen to you!

KQ- Do you think this is a good non-chronological report? Why? Do you think we could do better? What do you think is missing? (Encourage children to think about non-chronological reports). Talk about how the report doesn’t include a range of sentence openers and that the sentences could be extended using conjunctions.Explain to the children that there are two more features that can be included in non-chronological reports that they haven’t discussed – bullet points and diagrams. Explain that you are going to demonstrate how to edit a piece of text. Use an additional piece of paper to show the children how to edit a section.

Diet

Bogeymen are omnivores which means that they eat both meat and plants. The majority of Bogeymen feed on over-ripe food and insects as these are easy to source. Mostly, they drink toilet water but this in normally at night when people are sleeping. Their diet also consists of:

-Scabs

-Toenail clipping

-Bogies

A bogeyman’s favourite snack is flies, which he generally finds when sneaking around bins and rubbish dumps.

Look at the difference between the original and the new version. KQ – Which is the best and why?

KQ- What have you learnt about editing?

Independent Activities

Children choose a paragraph to edit. They rewrite it on a separate piece of paper and stick it over the original text. ARE/WT - Work together with a partner to edit text, so that they are able to discuss and improve the text. Ensure that the children focus on the sentence openers, conjunctions and bullet points.
