Project TitleThis Is Us

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words) MINIMUM 140 MAXIMUM 160 My project is a spoken word piece looking at society. My main area concern is to create an experimental film looking at the trials of today’s society and showing the “reality” of how the world appears to be changing. I am interested in the changes in society through the medium of social media being accessible 24/7 or the rise of “fake news” showing us the dark depths of our politics; it’s like watching children in the playground fighting their territoryIt is essential for my audience to understand the power and presence of social media.I feel that the most important element of my project is to get people to understand that this is something that affects all of us. My aim is to get generations thinking about how much society has really changed not just the UK but the whole world. The progress I have made is

developing a wide range of media skills which enables me to turn my ideas into a reality.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words) MINIMUM 180 MAXIMUM 220

My project is going to be a 2-3-minute short experimental film about how much society has changed. My aim for the project is to say to the audience that what we really need to do is take responsibility for the mess we call our world This will be shown through the eyes of the public protesting to the world. My main influences for this project is politics today, from Donald Trump to Brexit. I was also inspired by the campaign video The time is Now: Criminal Justice (Alicia Keys 2015). I will be researching various elements of our world from the public’s opinion on our world today to analysing documentaries. My target audience will be 18-25 years’ old who are interested in the history of change in society. My role within this project will be the director/producer as this role has the most creative and visionary mind-set. However, I will also be taking other roles to complete this project such as a camera and sound operator. Through this I will be using various graphics and props to represent opinions and Steadicam to stabilize the shot, camera, shot gun mic, Tripod and a Led 3-point lighting set up.Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words) MINIMUM 135 MAXIMUM 165

To evaluate the process of my project I shall produce serval documents each week which concludes a journal of my thoughts and processes throughout the entirety of the production, a review on my progress from peers and Lecturers feedback both reviews will be represented in a document which will be provided each week within my blog. Within the production stages I shall be producing a video production diary which shows behind the scenes and me outlining what went wrong and well. I will be conducting serval evaluations for the literature review, research and post production to reflect on what I could have done better and what I liked or disliked about each individual tasks within that week. As well as an overall evaluation to outline and reflect on the entirety of the project to what I may have wanted to improve and what I have learnt overall. CHAPTER 1

Introduction

This Project portfolio is a completion that’s shows my journey for my Extended project for my second year within the UAL Extended Diploma Creative Media Film and TV Pathway. This project is a short Experimental film which is about representing and speaking about the world today. How much we need change within our world and showing how society is really changing, sometimes we have to build up the barriers before breaking them. This is shown through various visuals and a spoken word which represents the public opinion on our world that we live in. This first chapter of the portfolio will be reflecting on my thoughts and background information of the very beginning of my project. Explaining what or who may have inspired this idea, what I have learnt during my course. I explain the importance of my project and why I had chosen this specific subject. As well as going into depth with my Research plan to before I begin to go in further with that.

The Background of my Project The reason why I had chosen this as my project is because I have always been passionate about giving my generation a voice, as I want it to be heard and have equality and justice in this world. I want people realise what our world is coming to. Through me always being interested in politics and documentaries ever since I was a young teenager. All of these things contribute to my idea of wanting change and wanting people to understand what is really happening behind those words of journalists in the news or papers. My idea is an experimental 2 to 3-minute short film based on expressing recent social matters within countries America and Britain. Showing our opinions through a spoken word piece which will compliment various visuals. For this project I want to achieve allowing the public and our generation to have a voice in another matter which is us being human in our world today. Even if it is the modern world today there’s still things that need to be changed and recognized. I want to use my skills of sound and camera work to this project to make it hopefully the best one I have done yet. My expected Target audience would be 18-25 years old who are interested in the history of society playing in front of their very eyes. Seeing ever little piece of society UN tie and investigate the meaning of what is fake news and what is ok to believe and what is not. Our world is changing every minute, hour and second. Population growing and society going through the ups and downs of changes.

Who am I? This is an infographic in which I produced at the beginning of my project so then I can continue to explore the question who am I? This represents various lists and explanations to what things build up to who I am. Through having inspirations or goals I aspire to do they have changed throughout the two years of doing this course because I have begun to grow and understand more about who can inspire my ideas or what experiences can add up to me having a passion for something. This will represent images mixed with various texts to answer this question.

What did I learn on my course?

As well as my who am I task I have learnt a lot throughout the course through me not knowing much until I stepped foot onto this course. Over the two years I have gained a lot of skills and understanding more about the industry and techniques to. This will be comparing my progress from the beginning until now.

At the very beginning of my course, I did have a little experience with a few skills such as knowing how to use certain cameras and microphones or editing on Adobe Photoshop or premiere pro.

Within the first year of the course the first thing I can think of is learning about framing and composition which is the first thing I remember. When I learned a lot more on how to make sure the camera and framing is right which has helped me a lot even now. Has made me think more about third lines, leading line or symmetry and comparing it to scenes from famous films. Another skills lighting learning about the different types of lighting such as the key light, fill light and backlight these are associated with a type of skill called 3-point lighting which has helped me a lot with all of my projects and I continue to still us them even for my project I am doing now. With also being able to know how to use colour gels to compliment with the white balance when using a camera. As well as these I have also learnt about the 180-degree rule which is based on keeping the camera on the same side to avoid confusion between the camera and the audience. This is another skill that I use when creating projects so then it looks clearer and not making the visuals confusing at all. Another one is introduction to audio which made me more interested in wanting to create my own Foley or sound effect and understanding the different types of mics and polar patterns you can have to. Finally, I learnt a lot about the paper work of pre-production and understanding the importance of it this has helped me a lot with project in and outside of this course.

As I compare to when I first started till now I have realised I have learnt so much and have recognised how much I my work has improved over the past two years. It’s made me more motivated and dedicated towards my work as I gained more knowledge and skills on top of learning about the basics we revisited some of them to look into them even further with for example replicating specifics stills from the BBC Twos “The Game” this was beneficial in understanding more about how to use a fill light, backlight and key light. As well as going through various projects such as the Hallo Project this was my first official short film and from that I had learnt a lot about time consistency and how to manage doing all of the role myself or working as a team to create a short film to.

Furthermore, this term I will focus on focusing on my editing and camera skills so then my extended project will be successful as I know mainly making those two skills my focus will allow me to portray the experimental style I want to portray to make this short film powerful and get people thinking about the subjects that will be in this experimental short film. Overall I believe that I will still be learning even more throughout this project whether they will be positives or negatives I will be able to learn from them.

What is my project about? Today, social media and news is accessible 24/7 but the only thing I question is it all true? we see everything now days from a different angle each news outlet could change someone’s view just by one tiny camera movement or word. Now I want to ask the public what they think about society today through creating an experimental video showing archive footage and opinions from a crossed all generations as well as basing this all on a spoken word poem.

My role within this project will be the Producer and Film Director”

Why my project is important? My project is important because I want to make a statement to inform the public and my generation to understand what is really happening in this world. As well as showing my opinion and others to what is happening in politics from the UK to America. I want my voice and many others to be heard whether it is about social media, culture or equality. Sometimes we need to show people how we really feel and I think it is important for someone my age to do so. As each piece represents something which could affect many futures to come. Everything has built up to now and I think it’s a great way to campaign and represent an 18 year olds view on how we as a world and nation is being represented.

My Research Plan

Table 2- My Research Plan

EXTENDED PROJECT - RESEARCH PLAN No of Words

Interest/Topic/Theme 150The interest a theme is based on society and the power of a view and opinion within a look into the world of politics and news today.I will be using various resources such as YouTube – Looking at similar media products and analysing them of what I liked and disliked about them.I will also be researching documentaries about today’s society that features the subjects that are mentioned in my spoken word.Influential spoken word artist – Reading different poems on society and how to portray them through moving image. This is going to feature elements of primary research by interviewing members of the public on their view on society and spoken word poetry so then I will know what angle to exactly go for when I am within the pre-production of my project.

Why is it important? - Importance 100

This is us, is improtant because it represents the songs, poems and films that have shown the public what it is really like from that point of view. No matter what era it is somone or people would want change whether that’s equality, diversty improving nature or human rights. We all have views that’s what makes us becoming individuals and the mechenisams of our beliefs that could be effected by our experinces or our living situation it all equals to our view. This is why its important to express what we want as a generation and our views on many subjects that have split the world apart or if not got people talking about it.

My research question(s) 100What is the most effective way of representing a spoken word piece? Are we wanting change within today’s society? Why?

Research Design 100I am going to research about how to represent a poem through moving image and I shall be using primary research by interviewing members of the public with serval questions based on the views of today through the easy access to different angles on recent news by one click of a button. I will also be doing a lot of secondary research analysing short films which are similar to mine, looking at influences, my target audience is 18-25 year olds who are interested in the history of change in society I will be looking a products with a similar view and target audience and collecting a survey on this age groups views on my idea and what they would like to see. Experimental will be taken place for me to understand how I am going to show my spoken word. I will be doing production research through looking at the best location, framing and camera/directing style by looking at other individual production companies and directors who have produced similar products.

Literature/Resources Review

Here

Introduction

This chapter will show a review of various literature and recourses which will help me further my knowledge for this project. First of all it will be a practitioners report looking at one of the most influential presenters and documentarist that do a lot on society based subjects. Looking through campaigns, videos and books into ways to represent my poem through moving image it. The end of this chapter I will conclude with my thoughts on the research I had found out and whether it’s helped me out or not. Here is some guidance for the structure and completion of this chapter.

Tell the reader what you have learnt from previous work/literature/resources and how you position yourself in relation to previous work in chosen discipline/theme/topic/interest, within which your project is located.

Provide evidence that you are well informed.

Answer questions (What? Why? /How? /Look for specific problems and issues (theoretical and practical)/how media product communicates with the audiences/background of the artist and the project). • Covering a current and a past (not produced any work for the last decade)

practioners who is relevant to, influential to, connected with your project.

• You can use your Unit 12, or if you wish, produce a new Report, if you feel that there are people who are more relevant to your project now you know what you are doing.

Sir Trevor McDonald

Figure 4 Sir Trevor McDonald - Daily Mail

My first practioners report is on one of my most influential British Journalists Sir Trevor McDonald. From where he started being a news presenter for ITN news to now creating documentaries on crimes that become more uncovered.

For me Sir Trevor McDonald is a true inspiration and a national treasure. Who has been in journalism since 1969 when he moved from his home country Trinidad to the United Kingdom from having a job offer from the BBC and that’s where it all began his first news headline was in Northern Ireland when the riots were going on during that time. In 1973 he became ITNS first black news reporter which was the first break in many years for the broadcast industry for Itv, He’s careers has spanned over 50 years and is all still continuing to this very day. The way he has made and change so many people’s views. As he quoted within an interview for the Baftas YouTube page “You hope they like what they see if they talk about it it’s a success” that’s one of the reasons why in my view he is such a huge influence into what I believe and why I want to do this project and be who I want to be within the television industry. Sir Trevor McDonald has a broken barriers beyond what I could ever have imagined. Through allowing serial killers or members of the mafia open up to him on camera is incredible it makes you so passionate about the subject afterwards to. He says he wants to interview current people, people that are wanted to be interviewed because if you don’t you won’t be in the same pace as the media/broadcast industry today. From him living in a small part of the world before he’s major success of a career he was listening to BBC on the radio because he was so interested in where the journalists went a crossed the world and he felt like he wanted to do the exact same. “It was a nice way to see the world” – Sir Trevor McDonald.

He has had a career many im sure would like to have through experiencing so many historic moments within society to. It shows even now from the documentaries I watch with him in it makes me think I want to be in that position one day I find it so interesting how he can easily connect with these people because he’s bringing the truth and there side of the story.

Analysis on Trevor McDonald within documentary

An Hour to Catch a Killer with Trevor McDonald

Figure 5 an Hour to Catch a Killer with Trevor McDonald (ITV)

Trevor McDonald narrates the documentary so then he can get people to understand what’s going on and what the police office has to do as it’s usually an hour to catch the killer within the golden hour. I like the way he looks straight into the camera. He still sticks to the style of being a reporter or news reader. He isn’t forceful when he interviewed the family he reassures them and you can see he feels for them or listens to them.Theres memories returning back to what the victim was like, Trevor McDonald guides you through and treats it like an investigation it makes it seem as If you are there with them but in third person. It really explains the situation well for the target audience.

Literature Review Examine and explore existing media products, practices and ideas in spirit of creativity and imagination

A Literature Review starts with your research question – What are you trying to find out? Once you have your research questions, you can start. A Literature Review enables you to gather information, knowledge ideas etc from existing media sources, such as books, articles, journals, podcasts, web sites, documentaries etc. As you gather this information, it will either support your original research question, or provide you with new areas to research, or even make you consider an alteration in your research plan, and a change to your research questions. As you read and analyse the different source material, you will start to synthesis (Look at the Literature Review PowerPoint to remind you of what that is)

the information you are acquiring. Your analysis and synthesis is what you detail in your Literature Review. It allows you to clearly and academically demonstrate that you have researched and analysed the existing sources relevant to your media product.

Media Product Review

In this section you need to examine and explore existing media products, media practices and ideas in the spirit of creativity and imagination. Identify different media projects related to your media project. Record and analyse findings.

What are similar media products and how is my work related to them? (position yourself and your project in relation to similar media products)

How have similar media products influenced my project?

How have they shaped my project?

What did I learn from similar media products? (compare similar media products, how it influenced your perspective and ideas for the project)

Conclusion

Answer the following questions: -

Who or what was my inspiration for my project? Refer to Chapter 1, and your “Who am I?” task to help you answer these questions.

Contextualisation of my study – this is, “What was your motivation to do your project?” Refer to Chapter 1 and your Project Proposal to help you answer these questions.

CHAPTER 3

Research Design

IntroductionThis chapter is ‘How-to’ section of your EXTENDED PROJECT. In this chapter you have to introduce the design of the research, how data was collected.

The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter. For example:

This chapter explains research design for my EXTENDED PROJECT. It starts with research questions and follows by the description of the research design and research methods used in my project.

Research Questions

Start with stating the intent of your Extended Project – what are you trying to achieve?

Outline the key characteristics of your project. Write about your overall research aim. Ask yourself: “What do I want to find out?”

You have to base your research design on your research questions Write clear research questions, detailing what you wanted to find out and why?

Each piece of resarch needs to have a question, before you can start. The research activity should be supportive and relevant to the type of information you are trying to find out.

Research Design

In this part of the chapter, you will expand on what you wrote in your project proposal. Write about what you researched and how you collected your information/data (research activities).

Remember, in this chapter, you will only write what you have researched and what research activities you used. In the next chapter, you will write about your findings, analysis and conclusions

This primary research is anything done by you, such as:- Online questionnaire – you could ask your Facebook friends to comment on your

project idea and give you some additional ideas how you can make it better. Get the feedback from your Lecturers and peers and reflect on it in relation to your

journey. You can contact companies, the council, artists, depending on what your project is

about to get their opinion on your project idea. You can use your phone or tablet to research, take photos of possible locations and

places that you can use in your project. Practical activities such as creating models, drawings, recording, filming, working in

Photoshop. Experimentation

Target Audience ResearchAsk yourself questions: Who? What? Where?

26

Who is your target audience? Who are you aiming your product at? What type of audience is it? Investigate the target demographic and record the type

of media or entertainment they consume. Where can you find this out? You can use, ‘YouGov Profiles’ site to find out about

your target audience demographic. (secondary) You can set up interviews or record a ‘Vox Pops’ (primary) to find information about

your audience. Skills and Techniques Research

Come up with the plan of what skills and techniques you will need to research to produce an effective, original and to near professional standard project.

For example, you can watch tutorials or read about how to achieve specific skills and techniques that you will need for your project (secondary) (cross reference)

Experiment with range of skills yourself (primary) (cross reference)

Production ResearchExplain what and how: o People needed for the production/availability (how: emails, Facebook, Skype

conversation, etc.) o Research production roles that you will need to carry out and how to do it

successfully (how: the internet, media books, etc.) o Production schedule (how: create your own) o Budget (How: secondary internet, primary ask yourself) o Recce research/location needed (how: take images, contact individuals for

permission, etc.) o Health and safety research ( How: take images, check locations yourself, ask for

permission) o Visual ideas (storyboard optional) (How: take images, create sketches, get

inspired by other people ideas, etc.) o Props (how: make a list, ask to borrow, make it, buy it, use what you have)o Production (techniques, hardware, workflow) (how: research what you need /

how: try it yourself) o Post -production (Edit, colour correction, VFX, etc. (how: read, watch how other

people/professionals do it, try it yourself)

Conclusion

List all research activities

What activities did you conduct to answer your questions and collect the data? Write about the information and data you collected; your choice of data presentation and how you structured your information.

The research activities should be identified such as:

Observations (observational drawings; using photography, video and audio to collect data)

CHAPTER 4

Research Findings

In this chapter, you will summarise the collected data and the statistical treatment, and/or mechanics, of analysis. You should start this paragraph by briefly restating the topic/theme of your project (take it from Chapter 1).

Explain the object of each question, research activity, point out results, and present those results in a chosen form of summarised data. Select method of presenting data carefully.

In a quantitative study, the results usually begin with a description of the sample (e.g., sample size, description of participants who were excluded and why, handling of missing data). Next, descriptive statistics (e.g., frequencies/percentages for categorical variables, means, standard deviations, and ranges for continuously measured variables) are presented.

In a qualitative study, the results often include many quotes from participants who were interviewed. Here you should also present your non-textual elements such as photos, videos, audio files, maps, tables, charts, mind maps, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis, etc.

Findings/Data analysis What did you learn from your research and how did it inform our project?

Present, explain and contextualize findings

Background and context of the work (refer to work produced in Chapter 1) What is it that makes me do my project? My personal experiences that influence my choices (idea for the project, my role in

the project, how it relates to my future possible career) What is the basic premise of my project? What do I seek to achieve and how it relates to my target audiences?

Use Findings to contextualize my Project. Present and Discuss Findings. (refer to work produced in Chapter 2)

What are similar media products and how my work relates to them (position yourself in relation to similar media products)

How do similar media products include my project? How they shaped my project? (thought and action) What did I learn from similar media products? (compare similar media products,

how did they influence your perspective and ideas for the project – talk about both script and techniques)

CHAPTER 5

My Project

Introduction In this chapter you should present the level of self-direction, personal initiative and commitment necessary to progress ideas and find solutions, and the practical, theoretical and technical comprehension, appreciation, knowledge and proficiency necessary to achieve identified goals. The ability to plan and organise work within a given timeframe and the efficient production of outcomes both individually and collaboratively.

Pre-Production Produce Pre-Production Portfolio which will formally define your project (location

survey; risk assessment; treatment; script; budget; schedule etc.). Pitch your proposal to the production board (video recording of your production

board presentation)

Analyse your target audience. Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume

Production Project management techniques, (notes of team meetings; production and post-

production schedules; call sheets, etc.) Team and individual performance monitoring (weekly check against schedule)

Development – Demonstrate development (photos from the shoot, screenshots from computers). Keep daily production and post-production diary and reflect on your production process.

Post-production Describe post post-production of your project.

Assess your production and post-production process. Describe, and critically analyses any production problems and the solution you experienced.

Presentation In this part of chapter, you should demonstrate ability to be able to present a creative media production project to a specified audience. Your EXTENDED PROJECT has to be presented appropriately (effectively; imaginatively) and presented with suitable (relevant; purposeful) media conventions to suit the target audience.

You have been given the showcase of the Summer Shows (see calendar for dates). You need to explore the different strategies needed to present your Extended Project.

31

LO 3.1 4.1 5.1 7.1 7.2

Your presentation will very much depend on the medium of your Extended Project. In the Summer Shows, there will be the possibility to screen your films, exhibit your photos, or display your scripts and Pre-production Planning Documents. You need to:-

Decide what medium is most relevant for your project and target audience, and detail why you think it is the most relevant approach.

Design your presentation, paying particular attention to your target audience. If you are producing a horror video, a screening at 3pm in the main street is not appropriate. You need to detail and plan all elements of your presentation, from the physical exhibition space to the supporting promotional material and supporting paperwork such as a programme.

Write about what influenced your decision to present your work in a certain way. You should look at other events which have showcased productions similar to yours, such as Trailers, Art Galleries, and Festivals.

CHAPTER 7

Project Evaluation

Critically evaluate your finished media project against the agreed requirements and parameters.

Answer the following questions: Introduce the project in your words List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design Was there a theme for the design ideas? Can you describe it? Can you reference any

influences here? - art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc. What experiments and exploration did you do (what happens if). How did it affect your

development? Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what

comparisons/difference can you identify? What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to

help you with this Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage

to complete everything you set out to achieve? What did the client think of your concept? How did that make you feel? What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it? Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project? Does it sufficiently answer your

brief? Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before? Did it go better or

worse than you expected? What was the feedback from the client/lecturer? What do you think you could improve next time?
