Directions: Imagine that you are Victoria Confino. Using what you know about American immigration and the six artifacts provided, write a minimum five paragraph journal in first person narrative (you are pretending to be Victoria). Describe what her experiences might have been like coming to the United States and the difficulties she faced when she arrived. Be creative, use lots of details, and have fun!
Include the following:
1. Describe why you chose to come to American and how you felt about leaving your homeland.
2. Include a description of your journey by boat across the Atlantic Ocean.
3. Explain what your emotions and feelings were upon seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time.
4. Describe what your experience was like going through immigrant processing at Ellis Island.
5. Explain what some of your first experiences were living in the United States. (Include where you ended up living and working.)

Victoria’s father. On it, she wrote,
“Victoria Confino came in
this country August 19 the year 1913 the ship was the
Martha Washington.”
Artifact 1: A Postcard of Kastoria, Turkey (today it’s part of Greece), --the home town of the Confino family.
Artifact 3: This photograph was
taken soon after the Confinos arrived in
America. They moved to and
settled in New York City, New York and lived on 97 Orchard St
*Victoria is the girl on the far right. She was 9 years old.
