Mean Average

What is the mean average?

In maths, the average value in a set of numbers is the middle value, calculated by dividing the total of all the values by the number of values. When we need to find the average of a set of data, we add up all the values and then divide this total by the number of values.

Page 3: astreabyronwood.org  · Web viewTherefore, to find out the mean of 3, 7 and 2, you first add the numbers. 3 + 7 + 2 =12. You then divide the numbers by how many numbers there are

Therefore, to find out the mean of 3, 7 and 2, you first add the numbers. 3 + 7 + 2 =12. You then divide the numbers by how many numbers there are. 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Creative task

Paper plate mandalas!

For this activity you will need a paper plate (or you could use card and cut it into a circle), coloured crayons and black paint.

First, use your crayons to colour the plate in brightly. Make the colour as solid as you can, and use as many different colours as you want, but don’t use black or white.

Page 4: astreabyronwood.org  · Web viewTherefore, to find out the mean of 3, 7 and 2, you first add the numbers. 3 + 7 + 2 =12. You then divide the numbers by how many numbers there are

Then paint over the whole thing in black paint. You want a thick enough layer to just cover all the colour, but don’t do it too thick or it will take forever to dry!

Once the paint has complete dry, you need to scrape off your pattern. You could experiment to see what works well for this – maybe a cocktail stick, a paperclip, a pen lid or even a plastic knife. I have put some ideas for designs below, but you can do it however you want!
