VOLCANOES BY FINLAY HUNT Introduction A volcano is a rupture formed by two tectonic plates that push. The magma, lava and ash erupt from the volcano and it causes a big disaster. The four main kinds of volcano are: cinder coned, composite volcano, shield volcano and lava domes. These kinds of volcanoes are then considered as active or dormant. An active volcano is a volcano that has erupted once or more and may erupt again at a later date. The opposite to this is a dormant volcano, which is a volcano that will not erupt. Danger inside a volcano Inside a volcano is molten rock also known as “magma”. Inside the crater is boiling hot magma and lava. Magma forms from little mantle rock melting, as these rocks form the magma moves upwards and the air pressure pushes too much for the volcano to hold, so the air releases and the magma blasts out of the chamber, (the tube near to the top of the volcano). After the molten rock flies out of the volcano the lava hardens into a rock called” Igneous rock” and if you get stuck under the large bits of Igneous rock, the rock is so hot you would probably die. The lava is also extremely hot and would have the same effect to your health, it would melt everything in its path. The lava holds a temperature of between 700c-1500c. The heat develops because of the magma that sits under the earth’s core. Volcanoes around the world Volcanoes are located near tectonic plate lines. Here are some of the volcanoes around the world. The first top ten are: Mount Vesuvius, Italy; Krakatoa, Indonesia; Mount St Helens, USA; Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland; Mount Pinatubo, Philippines; Mount Etna, Italy; Mount Tambura, Indonesia; Mauna Loa, Hawaii; Mount Pelee, West Indies; Cotopaxi, Ecuador. My favourite volcano is Mount fuji because my dad learnt to ski there and it’s in Japan. All of the volcanoes listed are so well known because of their dangerousness or their famous landscapes and locations. For Example: Mount Pelee is a dormant volcano, Krakatoa is the most recent volcano to erupt with deaths that occurred over 400 people, Mount Vesuvius is the most dangerous because of its distance to the city. Interesting facts Here are a few interesting facts about volcanoes: o the word “volcano” comes from the roman name “Vulcan” o volcanoes are often found in hot areas of the world o volcanoes can occur under water o the world’s largest active volcano is Mauna Loa, Hawaii o the solar system helps volcanos to erupt o birds bury their eggs near volcanoes

VOLCANOES BY FINLAY HUNT

Introduction

A volcano is a rupture formed by two tectonic plates that push.

Danger inside a volcano

Inside a volcano is molten rock also known as “magma”.

Volcanoes around the world

Volcanoes are located near tectonic plate lines.

Interesting facts

Here are a few interesting facts about volcanoes:

o the word “volcano” comes from the roman name “Vulcan”o volcanoes are often found in hot areas of the worldo volcanoes can occur under watero the world’s largest active volcano is Mauna Loa, Hawaiio the solar system helps volcanos to erupto birds bury their eggs near volcanoes

Conclusion

I hope you have learnt a lot about where volcanoes are located and why they are so dangerous. The interesting facts will support you to go and find lots more about this beast of nature.

Mount Etna, Italy Mount Fuji, Japan

A well organised report Finlay. You have used your research well to explain all about Volcanoes and have included lots of detail for the reader. You have thought about ways to help the reader understand and learn, including the use of pictures and images and the interesting facts section.

Remember to keep choosing different sentence starters and to experiment with some of the sentence we have learn in school including those with brackets, dashes and commas so that you can expand and add detail to your ideas.
