Transforming Wigan. Strategic Goals 2016

(i) Establishing the ‘Team Wigan’ ethos The small parish model with the attitude of “my building, my service and my vicar” is dying fast. Within the Diocesan strategy to grow ‘a bigger church to make a bigger difference,’ we will develop one Church in Wigan uniting all the disciples of Jesus – partnering with all denominations wanting to journey together in this. ‘Team Wigan’ will grow new Hubs of worship communities each with a Hub Leader and Associate who, together with the Local Missional Leaders of each worship community in the Hub, will form the leadership team to make and grow disciples in that Hub

context.

(ii) Creating the House of Prayer networkEach worship community will have a Prayer Co-ordinator. They will join together to develop the network with the aim of creating a vibrant House of Prayer. A rhythm of prayer will be established and we will also explore the idea of forming a prayer community

for people to join for a season.

(iii) Growing Local Missional LeadershipWe will invest in training, resourcing and coaching leadership to enable us to reform traditional and form new worship communities. The ‘Directions’ course will play a key role. We will set a new Leadership Development Pathway building on the good principles of the Diocesan School of Leadership and the Inter-Diocesan Learning

Community.

(iv) Developing Deeper DiscipleshipThe shift from ‘church attender’ to ‘disciple of Jesus’ is critical. We will keep up a monthly encouragement and equipping event and develop resources to help people make this shift and grow as disciples who make and grow disciples. Our ‘BreakOut Sunday’ on May 15th (Pentecost) will get us out of our boxes and into Wigan to express

and celebrate the presence of Jesus with us and in us by the power of His Spirit.

(v) New worship communities for young peopleYoung people are our focus group for making and growing disciples. We will plant new worship communities through our schools and will grow chaplaincy to include new worship communities. We will appoint specific

‘catalyst’ pioneers to grow this work as a team together in Wigan.

… and in and around thisWe will undertake a mission audit to inform our growth strategy going forward. We will be ‘pruning’ as well ‘planting’. As we move from the old to the new we will need to help one another step on in faith and love.
