STILLWATER, Okla. – Aug. 24, 2015 – Roots invites families to join in on a new camping
experience that will preserve, promote and improve the outdoors.
The nonprofit organization offers services for no cost. It provides camping trips to
various areas around Oklahoma with sleeping accommodations, educational guided tours,
sightseeing, meals and plenty of adventure. Roots encourages families to sign up with
friends to make the experience even better.
Colbie Curtis, founder and CEO, encourages outdoor education and plans to
collaborate with the many Stillwater elementary schools.
“I want to have the best experience for as little money as possible,” Curtis said. “Kids
that don’t have the opportunity will be able to explore and learn how to protect the
environment for future generations.”
Being outdoors increases lifespan, decreases risk of depression, lowers rates of
smoking and substance abuse and increases ability to function at school and home,
according to OPENspace Research Center (http://www.openspace.eca.ed.ac.uk/pdf/
healthwellbeing.pdf).
James Buffalo, a student from OSU and former Boy Scout, volunteers his time with
Roots because he enjoys camping and teaching kids.
“Growing up in Lawton, Oklahoma, I started exploring the Wichita Mountains at an
early age,” Buffalo said. “Hiking, camping, fishing and traveling gives me an appreciation for
the great outdoors. It is our duty to keep trails and campsites clean and maintained for
other people to enjoy, too.”
The organization supports park clean-ups, invasive species removal, trail building
and maintenance, and tree planting. Roots also contributes part of the profits to the
community.
Roots joins other nonprofits in the area including Lake McMurtry Friends, Boy
Scouts and Girl Scouts of America and Camp Fire Heart.
Volunteers are needed; therefore, college students, travel enthusiasts, wilderness
first responders, hikers, campers, fishermen and parents are encouraged to contact Roots if
anyone is wanting to volunteer. Local businesses and organizations can also help by
providing donations of any kind.
