Harry Simmons Unit 12 Task 2 I will evaluate two scenes, one from a contemporary film and the other from a historical film. I will analyse both scenes from social, political, environmental and ethical contexts giving a critique and analysis from the scene from the filmmaker’s perspective. Beginning with a scene from a contemporary film I have selected Pulp Fiction. With so many popular scenes to choose from I decided to talk about the Samuel L Jackson scene. This scene shows two men one of which being Samuel L Jackson inside of a man’s apartment violently demanding information about Marcellus Wallace, the male questioned struggling to give an answer resulted in Samuel shooting the man’s friend leaving him shook and scared for his life to be taken away. Finally, after demanding over and over again the fragile white male gave an answer to the confident black male shortly after being shot up multiple times by Samuel and his partner. The mise-en-scene involved in the scene was very high standard portraying a very realistic feel, the costumes and acting went together perfectly showing who the aggressor is and who is in danger. However, the gun shots could have been animated a little better using digital effects but the loud bangs have definitely made up for it changing all actor’s expressions and responses after each gunshot. The story staying fast paced through-out and constantly changing made for a very unique feel whilst watching, using the element of weapons for danger and suspense leaving the audience on the edge of their seat. The screaming, yelling and swearing from the aggressor showed a black man in power over a white male who was frightened, shaking and stuttering which I believe shows how far the society has developed in production showing the black race is equal to all. Nonetheless, though shot in 1994 I believe the camera quality and filming style was excellent and needs no improvement as it gave an old feel to it any upgrades being made would simply take away from the authentic feel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crR6pBGMZ90

Harry SimmonsUnit 12 Task 2

I will evaluate two scenes, one from a contemporary film and the other from a historical film.

For my analyses on a historical film I have decided to discuss the movie Suffragette specifically the “We Will Win” scene. This movie represents a very important time in history when women were under the complete control of men and had no say in the government, politics and law even any basic jobs were all strictly exclusive for men. The scene begins with the government discussing violent acts constantly being created by women as a recent bombing had taken place executed for attention by the media outlets to represent equality for women along with the right to vote. Trying to handle the situation as best possible the government looks to arrest all responsible, transitioning over to a woman being questioned about the event. Standing up for herself and all women she is shown yelling furiously about the problems women experience day to day not caring about consequences heading her way ending by saying “We Will Win”.Analysing the mise-en-scene you can clearly see who is in power and who isn’t being treated fairly, with the use of props and costumes in this case the men controlling the women. From a political stand point you can clearly see how important this was to all women till this day, with no say in politics women were forced to agree with any change and the voice of their husbands otherwise, they would be punished by law.Looking back in today society this has clearly been acknowledged as a wrong doing clearly unethical and unfair to the freedom of all women, with drastic changes being made women are now able to vote and have a say in what changes can happen in the world.I believe this was a very powerful scene and extremely power movie really showing and representing the struggles others experienced in the past highlighting all crucial events, including great camera work, acting, props, costumes and quality in the production.
